Osbourne Ruddock (King Tubby) may have invented Dub but his once protégé, Hopeton Brown (aka SCIENTIST, the Dub Chemist) is, frankly, peerless; especially in the ingenious way that his mark was left on THIS track. 1982??? Could've been yesterday...it certainly continues to stand the test of time :-)

Robert Frost actually you will find that they used no compression really. No gates .. just good mic placement.

To be precise we hear Tape compression , all instruments group to one track mono , same for drums etc no gate, or as an effect with a sidechain , I think is just good preparation of instruments and pre eq recording !

And this why Jamaican studio's, particular Channel One Studio's is my favourite studio to me, I would love to know more about Channel One Studio's equipment, recording and much as possible of how they recorded, I'm a big fan of Channel One. Also R.I.P Joseph Hookim.

Yes R.I.P JoJo ( what a sad news ) , Fondator of THE sound with Sly Dunbar , they inspirated Roots radics futur style of playing ...Then Henry Lawes push the early Dancehall to another level with Barnabas, Solje who find the sound and have the "formula " knowledge to capture perfectly the sound of Roots radics , for me all come tru the source of instrument, especially Drum , in this era they are really limited ...but have a big API board ( similar to API 2488 but in 16 Channel ).and a lot of classic mics . Then they mix and send tru Subgroup 4 mono tracks & go to Tubby studio , Scientist to polish the mix & Dub and pre mastering process ( For me Scientist is a Fantastic Dubmaster not a recording engineer like Barnabas or Solje. Scientist in King Tubby studio use an MCI Pre 400 with beautiful class A electronics , cream sound + the fantastic Altec 9069 filter .
