He was talented in college. College isn't the same as the NFL where everybody is a top athlete. You can't just run around and play backyard football like in college because guess what, the players that couldn't make the NFL aren't there to be ran around.

he had one of the best wide out corps in college football, a great O-line, and one of the best offensive minded coaches at the time. Insert Random Johnny College Kid into that system and you will have similar numbers as Johnny Football.

As far as him being “broke” in college, well that was probably because his parents had him on a budget and said no when he wanted something completely unnecessary to his stay at A&M. And most people in the US don’t have parents that can afford to help with college expenses.

It's really telling that no NFL team wanted to touch this guy after Cleveland released him. He sucked so hard and had such a poor work ethic that teams wouldn't even entertain putting him on their roster.

I wouldn't call it a waste of talent, the talent really wasn't there at the professional level. The partying didn't help, but the bottom line is that he wasn't cut out for the NFL.

I would believe his NFL comp would be someone like Taylor Heinicke. However, when he was drafted in the first round, everyone imagine him being Patrick Mahomes before Patrick Mahomes. There is no way to not disappoint.

I honestly look at him more like a Russ Wilson. I feel like the talent was there he just never worked on all the other fundamentals of being a QB

Man, I’m wrong about players all the time. And QBs in particular. I never saw ANYTHING special about him at A&M. Just never understood the hype, especially leading into the 2014 NFL Draft. Like I said, I get it wrong a lot. I thought Joey Harrington and Cade McNown were going to be huge stars. Brady Quinn and Kyle Boller too. “Johnny Football” was one of the few times I’ve been right when it came to QBs coming into the league.

He was undersized, had an ok but certainly no cannon of an arm, he wasn’t running a 4.2 like Lamar Jackson and didn’t strike me as the brightest bulb, things required to understand a playbook and read defenses which which requires comprehension speed and visual spatial intelligence. His backyard brand of football doesn’t work in the NFL without superior athleticism and arm strength, skill sets he doesn’t process at the level needed to play at a high level. The Browns wasted a draft pick more so than him wasting his potential as a career journeyman.

Johnny is actually a good dude. I was one of the owners of the discord for the zappers in FCF and we got to talk with him and Al the other players. Actually a decent dude just doesn’t care about football

I disagree…Jamarcus Russell is the biggest waste of talent ever. JFF would’ve had a hard time in the pros because his play style wouldn’t have worked. Russell was just plain gifted physically but just decided he didn’t want to work at all. He legit could’ve been the GOAT.

He didn’t work out in the nfl for one reason. He wasn’t a good quarterback. He played backyard football. That style works in high school. Even at the college level you can have some success but usually not on a consistent basis. TAMU lost six regular season games in his two years. For every Alabama that style beats, it will lose to a Missouri. That style does not work very well in the NFL. You can’t just wing it and survive in the league.

The Missouri team he lost to was 5th ranked at the time and they didn't lose to any non-ranked opponents, two of those losses they had over 40 points. Johnny Manziel was a very very talented quarterback, he didn't have the strongest arm, but his touch and placement was ridiculous. Also, he had the athleticism but most importantly, unprecedented ball carrier vision, he was a bust because he didn't watch film, work on his weaknesses such as his overreliance on going for home run plays, but he had the ability to succeed, he wouldn't have been a projected top-5 pick in-spite of his extreme red flag character concerns.

Didn't have the arm talent? He had more than enough to get by, it wasn't mahomes level, but he had the accuracy for it to not be an issue. As for speed and athleticism, even after his atrocious combine, every scout was still saying he was next level when it came to his mobility, and pocket presence. Physically, he had all the tools to succeed in the NFL, albeit in a very unorthodox way, with some scouts saying he had the best playmaking ability and instincts they had seen. Also, let's not forget that the Browns had Josh Gordon suspended for most of the year, and were still 7-4 at one point with Brian Hoyer as their QB. I think if Manziel had the maturity, and lack of mental health issues, combined with better circumstances he would have been very succesful.
