So my hometown is actually Sleepy Hollow NY. I remember in Kindergarten going on a “field trip” which was just us walking down the road to the cemetery and being shown everyone’s graves including the stick that marks the headless horseman’s grave. Also remember a number of trips to the haunted bridge which still gives me the creeps. Halloween is a BIG deal in the town and still the best scary hayride I had ever been on. And even though this doesn’t follow the plot of the actual legend, as a kid, I loved having a major movie out there about our town legend with Johnny Depp as Ichabod as well!

@@nickreacts6394 I recommend Cinemassacre's A Trip To Sleepy Hollow. He visited the town and gave a brief guided tour of the few surviving locations from the story, complete with appropriate quotes from the book and clips from various adaptations.

This movie is basically Tim Burton's love letter to a style of film popularly called "Hammer Horror", named for the studio that invented the style. Hammer Horror is known for using gothic stylings, a cast of British stage/screen legends (Christopher Lee was common in them, thus the cameo), and--most of all--bright, vivid, technicolor blood.

This is quite interesting, I had no idea... but I can say from what you're describing that I think Burton really nailed that style, and it's very cool he cast an actor who performed frequently in that genre. Thanks for telling me about this!

@@nickreacts6394 Yeah, Tim grew up with that genre and it HEAVILY influenced his personal style. Some other key factoids about Hammer Horror: Among the regular actors in those movies was Peter Cushing, aka Grand Moff Tarkin from Star Wars ANH! Also, as I said, Christopher Lee was a regular... as none other than Dracula. And if you look at the cameo in this movie again, specifically where he first mentions Sleepy Hollow by name. There are wings behind him, and if you add his high collar to the mix, you get a surprisingly Dracula-like image...

8:37 That actually is Christopher Walken as the Headless Horseman and, at 11:57, you'll also notice Ian McDiarmid, better known as Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars.

@@nickreacts6394 I was gonna say the same thing - it is Christopher Walken :D Such an epic cast, Michael Gambon (Dumbledore), Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon), and also the evil step mother, Miranda Richardson played Rita Skeeter in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ^^ And as I mentioned on a previous video, Michael Gough who played Alfred in Burton's Batman movies as the notary, Ian McDiarmid/Emperor Palpatine as well, and the scene with Christopher Lee obviously! I mean, epic, epic cast! I think this is probably one of my top fave Burton movies, I really like the mystery and the horror feel to it, as well as Johnny Depp's portrayal of Ichabod, love every time he faints xD

One thing I've always been impressed by is that the Horseman has really good aim for someone without, you know, a head.

"What if more blood comes out, dude?!" A kooky fave of mine. Walken does great work without saying a word, and Ricci's paleness is perfect for Burton's memento mori aesthetic. And Depp getting hosed with fake blood always makes me laugh. Love a good cowardly character. His sidekick is a lot of fun too. He has some good quips and reactions throughout.

I remember watching a Behind the Scenes Documentary to this movie and Johnny Depp saying that Tim Burton took every opportunity he could get to spray Johnny with as much blood as possible and so those scenes always make me smile.

I remember reading that Depp was a bit weirded out by having Ricci as his love interest in this movie. His previous work with her was when she was still a child, so this was a little much for him. By the time Chris Lee shows up, you've already seen two other acting heavy-hitters; the entire cast is full of well-knowns. The 'key-thingie' is an Egyptian ankh, symbol of eternal life.

Johnny was dating Winona Ryder who played Ricci’s older sister in the movie “mermaids” in the year 1990. Ryder was 18 and Ricci was 10 when Ryder called Depp to answer a question Ricci asked Ryder about what homophobic meant. Depp explained it to Ricci, so I’d understand how Depp probably felt like and older brother to Ricci.

There's another movie set within a similar time period but is a lot darker than Sleepy Hollow with Depp and Heather Graham called From Hell. Its a murder thriller about Jack the Ripper. Depp, as usual, gave a great performance and the scene with the Absinthe in the bathtub has always stuck in my memory. You should check it out.

I love the Horseman as a movie monster. He's terrifying, he's unstoppable, and he sticks to his rules. He only kills whoever he's been summoned to kill, unless you stand in his way.

Sleepy Hollow is personally my favorite Tim Burton film. I think he does a fantastic job telling his own version of that story and of course the Hammer style cinematography and the score (imo Elfman’s best) fits the aesthetic so well. 10/10 can’t recommend it enough.

I honestly had no idea Juliet Landau was Martin Landau's daughter. In fairness, they look nothing alike. 😅

The Nostalgia Critic had an interesting theory about Burton's choice of style in this movie, especially the brightness of the blood. It could be an homage on the old Hammer Horror Movies. These were the first horror movies in colour and they have a similar colour style scheme like Sleepy Hollow has. The similarities are definitely there.

It wasn't supposed to be a theory. That's how Tim Burton actually made it, the NC just didn't look deeply enough into the production to see it was the case.

The art/set design was amazing! They actually built the whole town of Sleepy Hollow, the windmill, everything. The shot when the mist blows out the torches in the beginning was inspired. Also the use of all of the animals was to great effect. When Katrina and Ichabod are on the wagon being chased by the Headless Horseman, Depp was sick and running a fever. But he kept filming during the scenes where he is dragged by the carriage. The trail in the woods that they were being chased on was actually a small set that did not have great length to it. Burton had to find new and inventive camera angles and editing to make it seem like it was a long road in the woods. At the first beheadings, the carriage driver is, of course, is dead and the man runs into the corn field. The scarecrow he runs into is a real version of the scarecrow you see animated at the beginning of “Nightmare Before Christmas”. I suggest you watch Disney’s “Ichabod and Mr. Toad.” A LOT of the shots you see in here were originally in that Disney cartoon, including the flaming jack o’ lantern that is thrown at his head by Bram. Also, the windmill. Burton definitely borrowed from Disney’s work, but he went farther and made it his own. I’m glad he did it, too. That cartoon was the only real representation of what Halloween was like in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. It’s perfect. Burton made it better. 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃

Watched this movie with my sister when I was like, 12, which was not the smartest decision, but I got obsessed with it and re-watched it multiple times after that. Johnny's performance was charming and amazing, and I'm pretty sure it was this movie that led me to answer the question "who's your favourite actor?" with "Johnny Depp!" every single time to this day.

The five pointed star (also known as a Pentagram) Katrina draws in the church and under Icabod's bed is actually a form of protection. It's interesting how they're perceived as being connected to the Devil or some form of devil worship when in fact they were used as a means of protection from evil. The Amiens Cathedral in Paris has a motif of the Pentagram on the North Rose window

My favorite Tim Burton movie. It's so confident in everything it wants to be. The visual style alone is so strong. Johnny Depp's constantly uncomfortable Ichabod Crane is fantastic. Miranda Richardson's Lady Van Tassel is one of my favorite twist villains, her character's reveal is a brilliant twist.

One of my favorite Tim Burton movies (others being Big Fish, Ed Wood, Nightmare Before Christmas and Batman). Remember being scared of the trailer in kindergarten but watching it in middle school was a blast

Not my finest moment...

The acting is so good in this movie. Which makes total sense given the incredible cast. A lot of big names in one Tim Burton movie! I actually haven't watched this all the way through for probably 11 years when I was in high school so this was a fun refresher! I'm obviously a Burton fan with all the comments on this and previous reactions lol

Omg i love this movie...I remember watching it with my older brother and a day later we watched sweeney todd...you bet your a*ss that i watched a lots of disney movies to wash the trauma...😅😂after corpse bride this was the second Tim burton movie that i watched...loved the reaction it was amazing as always...we all appreciate your efforts to make a great video for us...can't wait for the next video...💖💖💖

Thank you so much! And Corpse Bride is a great place to start with Burton’s filmography in my opinion, although I can see how some Disney therapy might be required afterwards, good call! :)

The original story leaves a lot up to the reader's imagination. Ichabod disappears at the end of the story, but it's left vague whether he was killed by the Headless Horseman or simply ran away and never came back. Also, the true nature of the horseman itself is pretty mysterious. There's enough evidence, or lack of evidence, depending on your perspective, throughout the story to support it being a real supernatural force or just a prank cooked up by the local bullies.

Definitely recommend watching again!

You should give "From Hell" (2001) a watch. Another Johnny Depp pearl with a similar atmosphere.

An enjoyable reaction and commentary to my second favourite Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration. My absolute favourite being Ed Wood (1994), so it would be good to see you do that one. As an aside - and speaking of collaborations - your Buffy "School Hard" video with Riley brought me to your channel. :)

I think it's awesome that the Headless Horsemen when he's actually headless is played by Ray Park, who is a fantastic stuntman and a great actor. The two other roles I can remember him in off the top of my head are Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and Toad from the original X-Men movie. He's absolutely awesomeness personified.

This movie is so underrated, always loved it!!! Tim Burton is fantastic.

This is a fun dark terrifying horror fantasy adventure film from Tim Burton! I saw this on VHS with my family and I was scared to go to sleep after seeing it, yet it's brilliant! It was nominated for 3 Oscars: Best Costume Design Best Production Design Best Cinematography. It won Best Production Design.

I’m glad you did this one, I hope you’d try out Dark Shadows too. It another underrated Tim Burton mc Johnny Depp movie which I believe deserved a sequel. It was a nice comedic take on original Dark Shadow series.

Martin Landeau played the nobleman getting his head cut off at the start and the judge was Sir Christopher Lee, both legendary actors. along with Richard Griffiths, Ian McDiarmid who played the Emperor in Star Wars, with Michael Gambon and Miranda Richardson, this was wonderful

Yes!! This is one of my favorite movies. So creepy, so gory, so funny, so beautiful! Glad you enjoyed it too! As for the swordsmanship being so amazing, that is in large part thanks to Ray Park (aka Darth Maul) who played the headless version of the Horseman. Talented martial artist and stuntman. I loved watching the behind the scenes for this movie, just to see how they did all the visual effects. Looking forward to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

I saw this in theaters when it came out! My favorite Tim Burton movie.

This movie is one of Burtons gems. Horror, supernatural detective movie. that still manages to be fun, and gory. and creepy. I remember as a kid my aunties were watching this movie and I peaked in and saw the scene where the headless horsemen killed the youngun who was about my age at the time. I remember I coulnt sleep that night because I was afraid the horsemen would come for me. because the illusion of "he wouldnt come after me Im a kid" was shattered. completely.

In the commentary, Tim Burton said it always drove him crazy, knowing kids always survived horror movies, and he didn't do it this time because he felt it was scarier when the illusion is broken.

@@nickreacts6394 funny story about this movie when I was 5 was when I first watched it and I would watch it on repeat it didn't phase me at all as a 5 year old gory films didn't bother me at all but now when I watch this film some of the gore bothers me haha and i used to call this film sleepy mollow when I was a kid I used to ask mum all the time if I could watch sleepy mollow haha

Nice little fact for you, Gunpowder, the horse Johnny rides throughout the film was called Goldeneye and upon hearing he was to be sent for slaughter after the film finished, Johnny immediately adopted him.

The cinematography and set design is what makes this movie.

12:42 is my favorite part. It reminds me of my favorite line from Bing Crosby's recitation featured in the Disney animated version of the story: "For once you cross that bridge my friends, the ghost is through, his power ends".

@@sammybear7100 Actually I haven't seen anything about them dating before only rumors currently from last year and certainly not before this movie. Ricci spoke about it being kind of strange at the time because she knew Johnny since she was 9 and Depp also felt strange about it at the time. Didn't stop them from going on to do more movies together in romantic roles. But I do agree I really did like them as Ichabod and Katrina together.

Fun trivia: The Horseman's stunt performer (for all the scenes without a head) was Ray Park (Darth Maul). They had him in a green hood to edit out his head, and the high-collar of the cape was cgi.

I’m so glad you reacted to this, one of my all-time favorite films. I’m wondering now if you’ve seen the Harry Potter films. You didn’t seem to recognize Van Tassel was played by Michael Gambon, who plays Dumbledore in movies 3-8. The dude whose head spins was Harry’s Uncle Vernon, and our villainess is the reporter, Rita Skeeter. The town doctor is Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars, too. So many great actors.

Okay, so the story of the Headless Horseman originated from the celtic myth of the Dullahan, a mounted warrior that carried it's head in it's hand and rode after people doomed to die. Basically the grim reaper on a horse. These legends migrated to the New World. After the American Revolution, a dullahan legend attached itself to a small New York village named Sleepy Hollow. The legend claims that a hessian soldier (German mercenaries hired to support the British forces during the war) lost his head to a cannon ball in battle and now his spirit endlessly hunts for his head. This legend came across the ears of an American essayist named Washington Irving, who turned the story into a short novel about a teacher named Ichabod Crane who gets pursued by the Horseman. This movie takes creative liberties with the original, turn Crane into a criminal investigator trying to solve the mystery of Sleepy Hollow. If the version you read was by Washington Irving, that was the original. I also recommend you check out Disney's version. Try to find the version that has a history of Washington Irving if you can (I think it was an episode of The Wonderful World Of Disney, though the main story was originally released in theaters along side The Wind in the Willows). Even that late it was standard practice to just round up 'the usual suspects' and beat them until one of them confessed. 7:32 - Just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean people aren't out to get you. 8:37 - There's a reason for that. 12:38 - Listen closely to the background in this scene. Several of the audio effects (particularly the croaking of the frogs) were used in the Disney version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. 25:08 - First time I saw this I INSTANTLY knew they were wrong about what was going on. Want to know how? Consider the mark's orientation.

I love how Johnny plays Ichabod in this movie

The intro music is beyons amazing. The suit for the horseman is also super fucking cool. Thia movie captivated me when i was a kid. Never scared me, i loved it.

The judge early on in the review is the same actor who played Willy Wonka’s dad in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. Great to see them working together in 2 films.

This is my favorite Tim Burton movie, and is also in my all time favorite movies. It's in my top 10, even in my top 5.

I watched this movie in cinema and it was epic. Perfect amount of beeing gruesome without getting too splattery for me. Great reaction as always! I had watched Episode 1 before and when the headless horseman got into the axefight I was like "is that Ray Park? It looks like Ray Park." Very satisfying to be right but interesting way to find out I can have sort of a crush on the way someone moves their body. XD Also I was in the cinema with some friends from school in Germany, one of those recently moved to our town from Hesse. We called him "the hessian" before we watched the movie (and of cause afterwards), so we all burst out laughing hysterically when they tell Ichobod "it was the hessian!" Probably weird for the rest of the audience when those 10 teens in the back suddenly burst out laughing at an intense scene and couldn't compose themself for quite some time.

I ADORE this movie. Absolutely my favorite rendition of the Sleepy Hollow fable. Nothing like the story, but it adds so much depth to it and gives it a reasonable motive that it’s impossible to not love it. The original was actually a short story iirc. Burton is now and forever my favorite Director of all time. In the original, Ichabod was a slimy creep lol A gold digging lech that was perking on the really young rich girl. Burton went well above and beyond to flesh out this story and actually make Ichabod likable and actually personable. I would love a Tim Burton World theme park where we all go through and experience these sets

This movie is peak Burton and peak Depp. None of them topped this before or after.

Johnny bought the one-eyed horse after the movie because they were going to put him down.

I love how much respect that Tim Burton showed to the legendary stars of Hammer, Harry Potter and Star Wars!

If I remember correctly. Because of the camera filters the blood just looked black on film so for it to appear the red it does it was actually bright orange on set.

Yes that is indeed Christopher Walken another gem of amazing actors/actresses in this movie and I love this movie so much it was the very 1st Tim Burton movie with Johnny Depp that I saw when I was a kid, while this movie Sweeney Todd and Edward Scissorshands

@@nickreacts6394 In his review of the film, Roger Ebert stated "No power on earth could drag from me the identity of the unbilled actor who plays the Horseman when he has a head. But you will agree he is the only logical choice."

Forgot to also mention that the action fighting headless horseman was played the same guy who played Darth Mall from Star Wars Phantom Menace, and Toad from the first Xmen movie.
