Chorus:
Well, I pulled into Natchez, next day down the river
But there wasn't much there to make the rounders stay very long
When I left, it was rainin' so nobody saw me cry
Big river, why she doin' me this way?

@@wesseljacobs2201 I have a picture of when i was 5 Mom & Dad took me to go see Johnny when he was at the Manns Chinese Theater here in L.A. signing autographs on his album.. The picture i have here is of me sitting in Johnny's knee - one of my pride prized possessions, i remember telling him that i wished i could play the guitar like him - but I'm not that perfect.. Johnny replied back, wether you learn to play the guitar or not - don't grow up trying to be to perfect, it's how we live through life with our imperfections is what matters most.. He was an exdraodinary man, i I'll never forget him..

This is such a great song and a great performance by Johnny Cash. Only Johnny could open his show and then in the middle of Big River explain to the audience there is a 3rd verse to Big River they haven't heard him sing and then he tells them why and, Here it is! This is just one of the wonderful abilities Johnny Cash had on stage with the audience. The song, Big River has such incredible poetry wound throughout the entire song, phrasing like, cavorting in Davenport, there wasn't much there to make a rounder stay very long, hey won't you bat it down by Baton Rouge. Johnny cash truly was The Singing Storyteller. I miss him so much.

Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry, And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky. And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River. Then I’m gonna sit right here until I die. I met her accidentally in St. Paul (Minnesota). And it tore me up every time I heard her drawl, Southern drawl. Then I heard my dream was back Downstream cavortin’ in Davenport, And I followed you, Big River, when you called. Well, I pulled into Natchez, next day down the river But there wasn't much there to make the rounders stay very long. When I left, it was raining, so nobody saw me crying Big river, why she buried me this way? Now, won’t you batten down by Baton Rouge, River Queen, roll it on. Take that woman on down to New Orleans, New Orleans. Go on, I’ve had enough, dump my blues down in the gulf. She loves you, Big River, more than me.

Funny. Great song, don't misunderstand... but Johnny stayed next door to my old apartment building (Ronald Regan too) at the Armstrong-Quinlan home for recovering alcoholics. In the town where grandma and great grandma lived after being freed from the Nazis in World War II. Everybody in this neighborhood of a certain age knows this, young people don't talk about it. Grandpa Haider used to help great grandpa fix up the old house at Irvine Park. Now the old Quinlan Home (bought by David Reynolds) is in great grandpa's backyard. (search Armstrong Quinlan home on youtube, they literally moved the house). Mr Cash passed away while I was in Istanbul.
