Not many people can say they were the best in the world at what they did. Carson was the undisputed king of late night and there will never be another like him

To me he is still the gold standard. Asked why he stayed away from politics, he said he didnt want to alienate half his audience. Todays crop sickens me.

He knew the difference between an entertaining show and a political platform.

He stayed away from the issues, almost always, but he poked fun at the looks, voices, and foibles of all the presidents constantly, regardless of their policies or political party.

He was friends with many politicians, but he refused to have anyone in office or running for office on because he didn't want his show to be used for political purposes. It wasn't so much about the audience. Nixon was on and so was LBJ and Agnew. He felt they did nothing but drag the show down. Reagan was on a few days before he officially announced his campaign, but he wouldn't say that he was running while on the show.

No one who has come after Carson is in his league or has had his impact. This is not just a question of talent, it's also about the fragmentation of TV audiences in the digital age.

When Johnny left "The Tonight Show", I fully expected him to resurface on NBC in a one-hour, once a week prime-time comedy-variety series in the traditional comedy-variety format. I think he would have done very well in such a show, and I think such a show would have been one of the most popular programs on TV. But instead, he simply vanished into private life.

@@tomtke7351 Carson disliked variety shows, plus they were out of fashion by the time he retired. He discusses this in his Rolling Stone interview. He also said back when he was 53 that being on a TV series after the age of 60 was ridiculous to even consider, and he was already past that age.

Watching Carson was very relaxing. With Leno there’s a little bit of uneasiness like it’s forced. And Fallon it’s a mess.

There have been some thirteen (if my method correct) comedy-oriented late-night talk/variety shows on the broadcast networks since Johnny retired. They've had good moments and segments, but overall, Johnny is still the best.

8 days and no comments but my own. Johnny Carson was a drunk and it took a tole on his marriages. He was not loved by the general public because he wasn't a lovable person. I personally think he was a stuffed shirt who never stepped out of line with powers to be. May he rest in piece just the same. Jay Leno was better by far.

You cannot be serious . Carson.did stuff wrong ,of course, but was THE late night dude .. Jaybird was just a pretty good comic that got a chance as host. He wasn't on the same level as Carson in that capacity. ..Not remotely so.
