Baseball offered Rose a seven year suspension, or a lifetime suspension with the ability to appeal after a year. A lifetime ban? Does that mean when he dies, the ban is over? If you're not going to put Rose in the HOF while he's alive, then forget it. The bets Pete made on the Reds had a point spread. His team had to score more than enough runs to win or prevent the competion from doing so. Now, as manager, how would he accomplish that? Furthermore, if one of his position coaches told him a player might be betting on games, would he report that player? And finally, according to reports, Pete was into the Bonanno crime family for nearly a half a million dollars. There are a handfull of things that baseball is afraid of. These include things like doping, fights, and obscene gestures. But, there are things that terrify them and these are things like racial slurs, work stoppages and viewer apathy. But, they will never forget 1919. When a sporting event's outcome is predetermined it's called pro wrestling. When it's outcome is decided by organized crime memebers, it's a crime scene. If Pete Rose had not been informed on, he could have easily gone into debt for over a million dollars. In 1989 that was more significant considering he was on a 2 year, 1 million dollar contract. In addition, the losses were accruing interest in such a way that his debt would only be satisfied with a hot streak or a really big win. Pete was not known for his hot streaks. He was known for taking chances. Imagine the MLB Commissioner sitting in the FBI Director's office. A tape is played for him in which two major organized crime figures discuss Pete Rose, the "Hit King" being pressured into throwing a World Series game to pay off his debts. In 1990, the Cincinatti Reds swept the Oakland Athletics to win the World Series. Had Rose still been managing, and been up 3 to 0, with his gambling losses well over a million, and a chance to get even with a simple covering of the spread, what do you suppose he would have done? In this scenario Pete not only doesn't bet against his team, he doesn't bet at all. He simply manages his players in a way that prevents them from winning too big. He still gets his 4 game sweep and covers all his losses. As for the Hall of Fame, he has to be reinstated into baseball in order to become eligible. If he's reinstated, an owner can hire him as a manager. Pete has admitted that he still makes bets on sports. As a manager it is unlikely that he, a proabable gambling addict, will be able to stop. The commissioner, knowing this, has no choice but to deny reinstatement. So, if you are wondering why Pete Rose isn't in the MLB Hall of Fame, ask Pete Rose. You'll find him at either the Mandalay Bay or the MGM Grand Casino from noon to five in Las Vegas.
