A beautiful movie about kindness and the great difference one person can make. Also contrasted in the film is the great difference one evil person can make.
Jane Wyman plays a deaf girl who is called "the Dummy" and treated like one until Lew Ayres, a doctor, comes to town and sees the potential in her. He teaches her sign language. I absolutely love this film. It's in my top 40 recommended movies of the 1940's.
Based on the real-life Lydia Dingwell (1852-1931), of Prince Edward Island. The film dramatizes the consequences of spreading lies and rumors, and the horror of rape, a subject which previously had been prohibited by movie code. Johnny Belinda is considered to be the first Hollywood film for which the restriction was relaxed. It was very controversial at the time of its initial release.
