Not only are you annoying as hell, you don't even know what you're talking about, which is the worst thing ever when you're trying to correct other people. A conductor doesn't tell the orchestra how "high" or "low" they should play. That is written in the sheet music. What a conductor does is interpreting the score and preparing the orchestra for how it should play the piece that isn't immediately obvious from the sheet music, steering it in a direction so that it becomes one unit, not a bunch of different instruments. Maybe he wants a certain timbre, or specific dynamics and so on. At the performance, he keeps the tempo, and indicates when instruments or instrument groups should come in, or emphazise certain parts. He's like a sports coach that holds the orchestra together, before and during the performance. You didn't know, and now you know, douchebag.

@@DealerCamel I see what you're saying, although some of my favorites such as Elfman, Zimmer, Horner, Arnold, etc... already composed their first popular works in their early 30s. And JW himself was already scoring during the 60s. Perhaps it's the profession itself that deserves more recognition since composers in other mediums tend to fizzle out earlier. Would Paul McCartney had been better off transitioning into making film musicals like Alan Menken in his mid-40s? I don't know.

I was in student symphonies in high school and college. I seem to remember that we tried running a piece without our conductor (the conductor would have had us try it as an exercise). Certainly doable, but with a reduction in quality. An orchestra takes up so much space that the speed of sound starts to matter. I can't remember exactly what happened when we tried.

I’ve played in concerts like this, definitely not at this scale but a conductor is more for the Audience than the people playing, it’s really easy to look at the book that tells you what to do that is literally right in front of you, and if you practiced you don’t need anything but to hear the song from people around you

I think what's always most interesting to me about this piece is that it's so iconic for the Empire (being retconned as the Imperial Anthem in Solo) but it didn't even show up until partway into the second movie. It's nowhere to be found in A New Hope.

I watched one of these concerts where audience was packed with kids who were upset and somewhat angry they had to go boring concert. Well orchestra played trick on the kids. They burst out with Star Wars with drums up front and symbols up front and the most exaggerated bombastic Star Wars music ever. Kids loved it! They never get to see how music is played.

The great Maestro left his seat in the audience and went to the podium to conduct. In his late 80s he looks like a 60 year old having the time of his life. The greatest film music composer of all time. Greatest symphonic composer of the 20th Century past.

The single greatest composer to ever live.

When I was in middle school, there was one year that the school band (of which I was a member) was invited to march in a local parade...a vote was held to decide whether the band would play the Imperial March or the "Rocky" theme during the parade. I was one of the (unashamedly nerdy) band members who voted for the Imperial March but the "Rocky" theme ended up winning the vote. I remember plodding along in the parade and noticing that nobody along the parade route seemed especially interested in the music we were playing. John was 82 years old here, and watching him conduct his own iconic music is truly something.

This is in my opinion John Williams is my person favorite for a conductor, he has also made so much music it’s really cool to see him still doing good.

His smile at 2:17 is the look of a true master tradesman admiring his handy work

It has been forty years, plus that John Williams has made everyone cream our pants! Everytime I see that 20th Century Fox drumbeat-It's Star Wars in my mind as a 12 year old. The perfect age for such a movie.

John Williams is the greatest composer and conductor ever, he’s done so many movie scores from Star Wars, jaws, close encounters, raiders of the lost ark, the Poseidon adventure, the towering inferno, ET, shindlers list, rosewood and so on

The genius of that man defies description. He literally translated an abstract concept like evil into a piece of sound with flawless precision. You don't need to have seen the movies to understand what this song is about. Such is Williams' impeccable brilliance as a musical communicator. There are very, very few people who deserve a star on the Hollywood walk of fame as much as this man.

If ever a day comes where people have forgotten about all the movies... William's music will STILL be played, and eternally iconic.
