    Thanks for sharing this explanation, Lachlan! Love the way you show the variations of the same position! Could you give me an advice about what to do when you are on bottom half guard and your opponent does this hip switch (at 6:03) but you didn't grab the arm first? This is my nightmare on the half guard... PS: sorry for my broken english

    Thanks. Any chance you could give some advice (hopefully detailed!!) on countering the sprawl. I use half and knee shield a lot and it is the pass that gives me the most grief. I'm developing some counters as I go but any tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Luke, do you mean where they hug around your thighs and sprawl back to break the half guard open? If so i'll see if I can get a video up. Prevention definitely better than cure for that one!

  • @lukewhiffen2602

    @lukewhiffen2602

    Absolute MMA St Kilda yep that's a pretty common one. I've been experimenting with loop chokes, various shoulder head controls to drive the head down and get some sort of control or extract an arm. That'd be awesome if you could put a video up!!

    Luke Whiffen I also agree that prevention is better than the cure. I have success taking away that pass option when playing half knee shield by constant grip fighting and control of the knee shield side arm. Never let them set grips or get into a comfortable position to pass in your half. Don't be afraid to disengage from half/quarter guard to open guard if the top guy starts to retreat in your half to try and sprawl out on your legs. However if you get lazy and they manage to sprawl and wrap their arms around your legs you have options but I think you have to address what to do from a conceptual standpoint based on how close they are to passing. Try working on the prevention first so you never even have to deal with it but I agree it's a tough pass to deal with if you're late on the counter.

    When should I rather go to high knee shield and when should I use regular knee shield (z-guard)?

  • @lockckey

    @lockckey

    You use high knee shield when you want to attack your opponent and low knee shield to create space. Its super easy to reguard from low knew shield. High knew shield is super awkward to reguard from.

    Lach, Would really really love a technique countering the ‘switch base’ half guard. Marcelo calls it the turning half guard (not to be confused with reverse half, as you probably already known.) you do demonstrate a little here, but that’s assuming we controlled the far arm. Usually people switch base and have both arms free, with one hand pushing your down so they can slip their legs out.

  • @tommym321

    @tommym321

    2 жыл бұрын

    It’s tough to do a straight ankle lock when you do t have control of the hips. As soon as he goes for it, Lachan will be getting up and putting his foot to the floor before the opponent can secure the two feet on his hip.
