Man, this band is amazing! All four musicians are at the top of their game. As a bass player, myself, I think Steve Swallow has the toughest job on stage: Playing that groovy, ostinato bass line, solid, for 15 minutes! He's like a zen master on the bass. It's a mini-master class in concentration, and on how to swing/groove the heck out of a simple bass line. Beautiful.

Yeah even though the others are burning the house down, Steve Swallow is the real hero here since his foundation allows us to know that it is in fact a house being burned down.

Man am I glad this is on video here! This group was put when I was really getting into jazz in high school. I listened to their album so much. Steve Swallow was under my radar back then as someone new to it all but I sure do appreciate seeing him here now, and Bill Stewart! He looks so young but was killing it back then as he still is now!

Metheny`s Sound is horrible, but the lines he is playing are great. His best album is "Question and Answer" that was his absolute best time as a guitarist ever. The later works could not reach that outstanding quality. By the way, from my point of view it is one of the best guitar albums of all times.

First of all, those aren't crappy sounds. Unusual, maybe, occasionally annoying - maybe, but even more traditional guitar tones like Wes or Benson can get annoying. Like you said, new sounds open a new range of musical possibilities and expression. Strange about your example with McLaughlin though, I wouldn't consider him in the same league as these two. For my taste, he's boring, over-technical and very often unmusical.

Here I am in the comments trying to figure out how to find this tone. As a guy who got my chops on metal, moved to producing pop/hip-hop/trap and now on a jazz/fusion journey, tying things together. I know exactly how to work this tone. Reminds me a lot of Brecker, anyway. Coming from a guy who isn't a massive Pat fan yet but trying to find the right stuff.

My God, grimace city! All a bit too posey for me-a pity because it is a very good band. I don't like the funny sounds and I can recall some far more riveting playing from all of them. I do get fed up with Metheny's recycling of the same ideas over and over -maybe bebop died for the same reason.
