Ever so often I type in Luther Vandross "A House is not a Home live", right here on YT. When he's standing there in that tux, FINE as F. singing to Dionne Warwick at the NAACP awards(when the camera pans out, you see a young Janet Jackson looking like she's reminiscing on something sensual) Dionne sheds a tear (just like I did the first and second time I saw it), you know you are witnessing greatness. The crowd was eating out of the palm of his hand. I see what my Mama and aunties use to get so excited about.

"A House is not a Home" at the NAACP awards in 1988 by Luther Vandross, is definitely one of, if not the greatest live solo performances. When the recording camera showed through the audience, some of the "greatest" artists(a young Janet Jackson, the great Dionne Warwick, Quincy Jones among others) seemed visibly blown away by the delivery. Greatness.

Clive Davis put it best. Luther Vandross was the greatest male R&B singer. John Salley seems like a very intelligent guy. What he said about your grandkids getting high on what you leave behind is very profound. It captures how every lineage goes through a trajectory. The great grand kids end up in poverty. And overall, Vlad is a very polished interviewer. He has such breath of knowledge. You could be forgiven for calling him the Charlie Rose of pop culture.

There was no reason for Luther to share what he was or was not sexually.......He shared his talent.......That is all that matters....

This life is definitely fleeting!

I don't blame Luther for keeping his sexuality under wraps, it would have over-shadowed his career.

I thought the video would be about their friendship. But wow just about his Luther's sexuality. Poor Luther had questionable friends. Luther didn't want to talk about it but after his death Sally and Patti sure did.

Who cares about Luther’s personal life, he was a great singer, and a legend.

We ALWAYS knew he was gay and who cares! I met him and saw him on a date with a guy once in NY, I was also on a date! (with a woman of course) They were sitting at the booth behind me, literally, directly behind us. I had to just tell him how much I loved him and his music. He was such a nice and humble person! I still have the dinner receipt that he signed and I will NEVER sell it!

Luther vandross is one of my all time favorite singers ever he was a master at covering other folks songs and making them his own whatever luther lifestyle choices was i never cared i just admired the mans talent.

@Jaime I realize this is 2022, but I listen to Luther everyday. The words in a lot of his songs is pure poetry. He brought us all types of songs, sad, happy, party, he did it all. Peace and Blessings🌹

What a talent he was, I bet if he was still here, he could still sing his azz off. He'd be in his 70s now.

I don't think Luther was gay. I think it's just a habit of "outing" people. Sponge Bob is gay now. If Luther was gay. Can someone please point out his lovers? Not a SINGLE male has come out and said that he was Luther's BF. Not a single person. All these celebs come out and say, he was gay. BUT, here is the point.... Just because you never see someone with a woman, doesn't mean they are gay. I have been single for over a decade and people assume I am gay. I just find it weird that OTHER PEOPLE can "out" someone against their wishes without evidence.

I can agree with some of this. In particular, that I am straight and single and have been said I was gay. It is self protection, I think, they want to hide their feelings behind you.

Case in point.....as egregious as the charges against R KELLEY are, I will never stop listening to his music. The personal life is between him and his Creator. You can take away the airtime but the gift can never be taken away because only God gives the gift in the first place.

Luther Vandross was probably singing to men which probably disturbed thousands of women who thought otherwise but that doesn't negate the gift of singing that emotionally pulls at the Heart strings of the listener. Regardless of who R Kelley was singing to (only he and God knows) the man is a musical genius! And for the record we all have hidden sins that would have us feigning a stroke if people who know us ever discovered 👽

Luther was gay at a time when it wasn't talked about as much and people didn't want to broach that subject. It's a shame it cost him so much happiness and stress in his life. How happy he could have been if he felt comfortable and able to live his life freely. It must have been so hard on him, his health.

We all knew Luther was gay, all of his fans - we all knew but we didn't give a shit!!!! His personal life was his personal life - we didn't care. We loved him and his voice and his personal life was none of our business. It's sad that he felt he couldn't come out as his true self. No one should have to hide their sexuality just to stay famous or to keep a job. I saw Luther in concert several times and we miss him so much. He passed way too soon. Rest in power and know that you were loved and that you are missed.
