In April 1984, I was working as a concierge at the Hotel Utah in Salt Lake City. I answered a call from a guest's room, and the man on the other end asked where he could get a bottle of whiskey. I told him that was a bit complicated in Salt Lake City, but I offered to get one for him. I walked a few blocks to the state liquor store and delivered the bottle to his room. When the door opened, I realized it was John Prine. I said, "you're John Prine." He said, "that's right." Told him I was a big fan. He said, "do you want to come to the show tonight?" He was playing at Kingsbury Hall on the campus of the U of Utah. I said, "are you kidding." What a show. What a songwriter. What a body of music he created. Thank you, John, for the many memories -- and for a great show in April 1984.

That is too cool! You are lucky. But then again, you were willing to go the extra mile for a patron and he recognized the value of and appreciated your good service and rewarded it. So I guess it really wasn’t so much about luck as it was the character of the people involved in the encounter.

Very few songs are sung with such heart and sincerity and personal experience, and this one reaches me deep inside like no others. Two more souls departed into the eternal light. How I love both John and Nancy.

I’m very sad about Nanci, and this duet Is so sad, but also heartwarming in that they were able to share their talents and their great public personalities with us, and may they both sing forever.
