One of the best songs ever put to paper. You could write a book just about this one song. Blood looking like shadows on a black and white tv? No one, NO ONE could write that except John Prine. Words fail me.

All the love we shared, between her and me, was slammed! Slammed up against the banks of old Lake Marie! Shadows! Rest in peace.

Merci beaucoup. John and Steve Goodman were my favorite songwriting team. And shit shooters between songs.

I love your talkshow Mr Costello. Oh how I wish Björn & Benny or anyone in ABBA up there with you. I love your respect for ABBA, and I love it even more that you were not ashamed by that during the "ABBA is the worst piece of crap ever made"-era of 77-92. Mad respect.

Jesus! How does the combination of an aging voice and not-so-great guitar playing give me the chills? Incredible. God Bless John Prine.

And, though I love John and the song, the Twin Lakes (Lake Mary & Lake Elizabeth) are in Wisconsin, not Illinois. (I grew up in Woodstock IL.) In the Chain of Lakes in Northen IL there is a Lake Marie, but the 'sister' lake is Catherine. Mary and Marie are only 5 - 6 miles apart. Not sure if he picked one from column A, one from column B, or what. Has anyone ever heard him talk more about the background?
