Absolutely agree, Adrian is one of the tastiest Hard Rock/ Metal players of all time. His solos have feel and are always in great contexts with the songs. He in my mind took Maiden to another level.

Adrian is outstanding, especially his work during the golden era of Iron Maiden the 1980's. Everything from his solos to his rhythm parts were drenched in feel and melody. I loved how he would bend chords and apply vibrato adding an emotional weight to the arrangements. He possessed (and still does) the ability to inject ear candy and hooks into Maiden's songs so tastefully. He also had an almost pop sensibility he brought to the band through his songwriting that made them stand out from the other metal acts of the time. While it's personal and subjective, when he left the band in 1990, I felt so much of the band's magic and chemistry left with him. In the studio albums that followed his departure, the band as a whole felt depleted of flow and next level class without him. It's no surprise when he and Bruce returned in 1999, the band returned to being a superpower in the metal world again.

What makes this such a fantastic video is that Rick is giving John, Tosin and Devin room to speak, and they are all giving each other room to speak. Ah, I'm just enjoying all Rick's interviews with guitar heroes so much at the moment.

That’s what happens when polite and courteous people get together. Refreshing.👍😎
My favorite bit is when Tosin, asked for his equivalent of Murray/Smith, is like "he's sitting right next to me bro"
love Devin's super diverse tastes
Thank you Devin for mentioning Enya and watermark. As a metalhead guitar player that loves Lamb of God and Metallica, In Flames, etc one of my biggest influences I still listen to all the time is Enya. Breath of fresh air hearing that

Remember buying Watermark when it came out,I was listening to Maiden, Malmsteen, Satriani but absolutely loved Enya at the time. Great to know that someone like Devin was into it as well.
Anything with a King's X mention in it is always welcome. They should have come up in your discussion about bands with second albums that were better than the first.
Adrian Smith a fantastic player who never really gets the credit he deserves
So happy DT mentioned King’s X. Those guys have their own thing and are hugely influential.
Adrian Smith is the bollocks. Totally underrated.
I love that Devon brought up Enya's Watermark. I must've listened to the song Exile like a billion times back in the day.

Anyone who has ever watched LA Story will know that song, even if they don't know the name of it. I can still hear that line from the movie in my head when i listen to that song.
So funny to hear Devin talk about “the guy who plays it, but when you try to, it never sounds like that”. I was one of the engineers on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony this year, and myself and a counterpart looked at each other and said the same thing when Frampton started jammin’ at soundcheck. It was just awesome to be standing there hearing that.
It is great how awesomeness can be so humble 😮
2:52 Yes youngsters! We didn't have KZread, and teachers were either hard to find or too expensive. We had to learn everything by ear or extremely poorly transcribed music. You have no idea how much easier it is to be a musician these days.

I love how all four gentlemen there are so humble. I also love for as technical as all four of them are and how vastly different they are, they all share such a love and flabbergasted wonder for Eddie Van Halen, as well. ❤
Good Conversation with other other lovers of music/real musicians is endless fun .. Man can I go on a camping trip with these guys just nerd out .. !!!
A great interviewer does inspire not interrupt. Thank you.
These 3 are inspiring individuals! Excellent video!
That is so cool hearing that they used Archetype Plini for their record

Liquid Tension Experiment!🔬 Awesome! Tony Levin 👍
KK and Kings X! Rock on Devin! I want one of his new signature guitars soo bad! I hope to see some demos, im curious about the triple pick ups!
Dr. Know it’s amazing all three of them mentioned him 💫🎶🎵🎶🎵🤘🏼🎸📶📶📶
I learned about wide vibratos using the same technique that John Petrucci talks about; except at the time, I was using some type of digital phrase trainer slowed down to 1/2 speed.
I'd love to hear all four of them plug in and jam for us!
6:57 that "o no"🤣
All 3 of these guys are legends imo, and Tosin's lead tone on Earth Departure remains my favorite metal lead tone of all time! For my ears that is just perfection!
That is definitely a Star Chamber right there Rick, spot on.
Devin bringing up kings x was real cool. No one ever talks about their influence on the 90s.
This is pure gold.
I'm the same w/ Petrucci on Adrian/Dave debate. They're both amazing but I gravitate more towards Adrians parts

When I was a kid, I loved Murray's leads the most due to the legato flow, but as I got older, I learned to appreciate Adrian's tone, phrasing, and especially his songwriting. Wasted Years was an instant sell for me. My brother burned a copy of Somewhere in Time onto a cassette for me, and I would listen to that to meditate and go to sleep in high school. That combo of Steve Harris (85% of the material) Dave, Adrian, Nikko, and Bruce is killer. I really loved Paul on vocals and Clive on drums too. Clive sounded amazing on Number of the Beast. The raw energy with Paul in the early days, combined with the guitar harmonies and aggressive rhythms was really something special.
Devin says Enya and Metallica which is basically what Devin sounds like lol
Those DT production sounds will change a whooooooole lot on the next album now. Cool that Jordan used a guitar plugin, but Jon Lord did the guitar amp thing 50 years ago... 😏
drinking game! = every time Tosin says "like" you take a shot
Adrian should give himself a pat on the shoulder ... And a round of applause from all of us...
I have used the Plini plug-in to record my Yamaha keyboard, and it sounded amazing through that
I scroll down the comments and nobody talks about KK Downing. Firstly I was suprised Devin mention him from all of the guitarists, first indication, secondly nobody in the comments says smt. That is the definition of underated.
😊🤘 favorite program john petrucci
It makes such perfect sense that Devin was into Enya. His recent music sounds like Metallic Enya
Christian Olde Wolbers, next? :)
Eddie riferimento per i grandissimi chitarristi! Mito
You know... Metallica .. Enya ,,, LOOOL Devin NEVER fails to impress
For me Tosin is right after Jimi and EVH. He is that important and game-changing.

You forget about Yngwie and Petrucci. And why I wouldn't include Tosin is that he alone would never fill a stadium. He is a genius but also very tiring

@@5150mili i do like me some YJM and Petrucci. They are derivatives of Hendrix tho, in the long run. Tosin absolutely would not fill stadiums but then again neither could Yngwie.
@5150mili

@@taunokekkonen5733 There was a time when Yngwie filled stadiums, at least in Japan in the 80s. Hendrix is nothing like Petrucci and although Yngwie recognizes Hendrix as one of his greatest influences when it came to starting to play the guitar, Yngwie developed his own style light years away from any guitarist, just like Eddie Van Halen did at the time.

I would have to say the most stand-out guitarists since Hendrix and Eddie were Randy and Vai. Eddie filled stadiums more than any of them, but Randy would have continued to do so had he lived longer. Slash and Zakk Wylde would be others worth mentioning if talking crowd appeal, filling arenas. Notice that Vai played huge arenas when with Whitesnake, but when he is really able to take guitar to new levels as an independent, it's small clubs unless doing G3 with Satch and someone else huge. Of all those who broke off from large acts and went their way, I'm thinking Zakk probably has had the most success. Maybe someone has better insight on that. It's very rare to find a guitarist who can really wow and captivate both audiences and musicians the way Hendrix, Eddie, and Randy did.
What Tosin said about skipping over learning good vibrato early on is literally the curse of the modern beginner. Because KZread's making instruction so accessible, too many people are running before they've learned to walk. I'm looking at *you* Dragonforce...
7:58
These three are literally The Divine Comedy. Petrucci's shredding drags you to Hell. Tosin is so complex, it's unfathomable Purgatory. And Devin's echo delays opens up the Heavens. Inferno. Purgatorio. Paradiso. They're even sat in the right order!
Love neil schons , and george lynches vibtado
cool. EVH forever.
they all love Meshuggah i think
Loud amps … It’s not “like a violent thing.” It IS a violent thing. Violent and nasty. That’s the beauty of it.
John 100% mentions Tony Iommi.
Meshuggah
Have a shot every time Tosin says "like". Good luck.
No mention of Allan Holdsworth? Weird...

:)
Out of tune, out of time, mistake here or there, that's rock n roll, and that's what's missing now. As Tosin says, there's a certain energy from live and loud that you can't get sitting in front of studio monitors at a reasonable level.
