I cannot for the life of me figure out why they didn't hire him on the spot the moment Trevor Noah left. He was the best of all the correspondents of that era of TDS. Or for that matter why they didn't hire anyone as the permanent host. So many great temporary hosts that would've taken the job, but a new host every week became exhausting after a while and I just gave up. Roy Wood Junior was my favorite pick though, and they just let him move on.

@@HellaGustComedy Central probably didn't want to retread the Nightly Show (Larry Wilmore). Trevor Noah was their way of giving it to a Black comedian without making Black American culture the focus. Ronny and Dulcé probably come off as too abrasive for mainstream appeal. Desi would probably have had more standing if Samantha Bee wasn't canceled. Jordan is too well know for exclusively clowning Trump supporters. Michael is just a generic white guy. Hassan probably had the best shot before he was outed as a liar.

I saw like five or six of the rotating hosts and there's just something about Roy where it makes you appreciate the effort that goes into a show like that, daily, and just the polish and "oomph" and delivery. He was silly and direct but also like stoicly confident. I don't blame him for peacing out when they couldn't commit to picking him. And I don't know why they didn't so I am not judging them. Perhaps there was a business element to it. But in pure talent he earned it, in my book.

Jon Stewart never really left. He has a show on Apple TV with full episodes on KZread called The Problem With Jon Stewart. It’s more deep dives and scathing criticism than it is jokes though. Jon on The Daily Show is presenting the daily news or political issues but satirizing them so they’re palatable rather than depressing. Jon on his own show is presenting the facts without making them easy to swallow. John Oliver’s show is a middle ground between the two.

Yes he brings up during an election year, when trump is running. Is Stewart trying to atone for retiring too early in 2015 when trump first ran? I’ve long maintained, starting when he retired, that he should have held on 1 more year to use his large influence at the time to help keep trump from winning. Daily Show with him was huge at the time. Stewart was at the height of his notoriety. It had nowhere near the mainstream reach after he left.
