Gets me too Joeann. I just turned 49 two days ago and this song just took me back to that awkward and skinny kid that couldn't seem to do anything right, unless it was on the banks of the river somewhere. Ahhh, there he was at peace and there is where he found himself and there, on those muddy banks, is where he would learn about love and life and how precious and sometimes painful they are. He would eventually find himself many miles away from this beautiful and sacred place but every two or three years he returns and breathes in those old memories and it is this song playing on an old radio somewhere in the background as he tells his young son of the adventures he and this old muddy river shared together when he was a boy. Life is good.

*4:29* This was my grandfather, Daniel 'Danny' Linne, as a teen living in Indiana, a mutual friend of Mellencamp. In this snippet, he is seen living life and having fun. He was a cool grandpa, who had some quirks and made not so great choices in life, but to me, he was still the coolest. He had a devious sense of humor and loved to joke. Overall, we loved each other; we had a pretty decent relationship for him being my only grandfather. He passed away rather quickly, too soon. I love this video-this song will always remind me of him and how much each of us should value life for what it is. Also, in honor of Veteran's Day, Thank you for your service, Grampese! I know you asked this a long time ago, but as much as I love/use the internet, it's the reason we can't have good music anymore. Nowadays, you can just convert KZread videos to mp3's and download any track you want. FOR FREE! You used to have to buy a 15-20 dollar CD just to get maybe one or two songs you wanted to have. Album sales kept billions of dollars flowing through the music industry. How many millions do you think recording artists make off album sales these days? It costs a lot to produce an album, but there's a fraction of the profit in it that there was before. It's kinda like not letting your weed guy make his profit, so he stops bringing you weed.

Not only is his music timeless..I hear he's a real down to earth man..still living in his small town in Indiana..I believe..heard stories from friends on how he would go to the neighborhood McDonald's and just be in town..respect to him and the people who just let him live..I guess that's why Prince never left Minneapolis..I heard he did the same..to all my 80s babies..ROCK ON!!..real music sees no color..salute..

How this is not on the streaming music services is crazy!!! Wonderful song of coming of age. On, such great memories for a gentler time. Now that I am way past that age, I still love this song. The backup singers are great as are the lyrics; listen closely. So sweet. Turn it up!

Well I lived on the outskirts of town In an eight room farmhouse, baby When my brothers and friends were around There was always somethin' doin' Had me a couple of real nice girlfriends Stopped by to see me every once in a while When I think back about those days All I can do is sit and smile That's when a sport was a sport And groovin' was groovin' And dancin' meant everything We were young and we were improvin' Laughin' laughin' with our friends Holding hands meant somethin' baby Outside the club "Cherry Bomb" Our hearts were really pumpin' Say yeah, yeah, yeah Say yeah, yeah, yeah The winter days they last forever And the weekends went by so quick Went ridin' around this little country town We were goin' nuts, girl, out in the sticks One night me with my big mouth A couple guys had to put me in my place When I see those guys these days We just laugh and say do you remember when That's when a sport was a sport And groovin' was groovin' And dancin' meant everything We were young and we were improvin' Laughin' laughin' with our friends Holding hands meant somethin' baby Outside the club "Cherry Bomb" Our hearts were really pumpin' Say yeah, yeah, yeah Say yeah, yeah, yeah Say yeah, yeah, yeah Say yeah, yeah, yeah Seventeen has turned thirty-five I'm surprised that we're still livin' If we've done any wrong I hope that we're forgiven Got a few kids of my own And some days I still don't know what to do I hope that they're not laughin' too loud When they hear me talkin' Like this to you That's when a sport was a sport And groovin' was groovin' And dancin' meant everything We were young and we were improvin' Laughin', laughin' with our friends Holding hands meant so much baby Outside the club "Cherry Bomb" Our hearts were really pumpin' Say yeah, yeah, yeah Say yeah, yeah, yeah

Whoever said “Classics never die” Cougar for sure! But also the man who introduced me to this music. Steven Smith he was a best friend for so many years, then I fell in love with this crazy man. He was a classic to he passed away September a couple years back. And I miss him daily I guess I listen to this when I want to remember the crazyness that I would not have had any other way. So this goes out to you Steven Smith “1969” with so much love from me and Crimpton who both miss you so much. I wish you were here beside me again!

@@Nightmareman3 "My old man worked 20 years on the line And they let him go Now everywhere he goes out looking for work They just tell him that he's too old" John and Bruce are REALISTS. They subtly attacked Reagan and his administration because they SLOWLY destroyed the BLUE COLLAR, UNION, WORKING CLASS... they grew up with. 40 years since trickle down economics began... (and before this pandemic) the unemployment rate may have been low... BUT THOSE WAGES NEVER PROPERLY ROSE.
