John Mearsheimer On Who Gains The Most From The Ukraine-Russia War & What Could End Putin's Assault

Renowned political scientist John J Mearsheimer blamed NATO’s expansionist agenda as the main reason for Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine. In an exclusive interview with Zakka Jacob, the Chicago University professor said that the US has been trying to turn Ukraine into a de facto member of NATO and Russia views this as an existential threat. Mearsheimer also explained who stands to gain most from the war. Watch this full interview where for all details.

@@derekcraig3617 Fascinating people don’t understand what “wartime propaganda is”. Ever wonder why every single conflict we’ve been involved in during the last 20 years has the same exact accusations about the other side? Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya. It’s always identical accusations about: bombing hospitals, schools, using civilians as human shields, using chemical weapons. Just Google the conflict name and one of those words (for example “bombing hospitals [Iraq or Libya]. Ever wonder why that is? Are some Russian soldiers committing war crimes? I am positive they are. That is a component in every single war by every side. Type in “war crimes in Iraq” and read any article or Wikipedia and ask yourself why you didn’t hear much about any of these things on the TV. Welcome to the wonderful world of wartime propaganda.

Russia has put nuclear missiles (or nuclear weapon materials) inside Ukraine during the Soviet era, they're there already. Those pose a threat to neighbouring NATO member States, if Russia were to seize and occupy Ukraine. And Russia's historic (and current) attempts to install a pro-Russian undemocratic puppet President and government in Ukraine is totally unacceptable to both the Ukraine people, and the West. The Ukraine people have made that absolutely clear to Russia. They're prepared to fight to the death to protect their democracy, sovereignty, and independence from Russia. Ukraine is not a NATO member. NATO has not asked it to be a NATO member. And NATO has no intention of putting nuclear weapons inside Ukraine. So Russia's argument there is baseless.

As many other have commented below, the other big winner in this process apart from China has been the military industrial complex, it certainly is very plausible to believe that this was all intended from the start since many other prominent intellectuals have been warning about it for years. Look at the situation over the past few years, NATO was losing its relevance, Russia was growing richer and closer to Europe thanks to providing it with cheap energy. The US was losing its political influence and distribution channel for arms. As John says, the US has been poking he bear for a long time, and it seemed like a very foolish thing to do unless of course your an arms dealer, for them it made perfect sense. Today the aid package of 40 Billion flew through congress, 7 Billion more than what the president requested, all Democrats voted in favor, only 7 Republicans opposed it. When it's difficult to make sense of things, the best thing to do is "follow the money", it's like Occam's razor.

One of the arguments of Western countries is that they have been fighting Russia for some 20 years because Russia has an autocratic regime, which is a legitimate argument, but then I don’t understand why the same Western countries maintain close alliances with autocratic regimes and dictatorships around the world, like Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar or Egypt, including helping them in brutal wars against neighboring countries, such as Yemen? If they are in close alliances with dictators, then it is not so much a fight of good against evil, but rather something like a Great Game between two imperialist blocs from the 19th century.

No one is critically asking why SHOULD Russia and India work together to contain China? What’s in it for them? This will only maintain the US-led “rule-based order” that mainly benefits the US, and the US will not hesitate to crush India or Russia if their economies did a little too well for America’s comfort, the same way it crushed Japan’s economy in the 1980s and the same way it’s trying to crush China now. On the other hand, China is quite happy to live in a multi-polar world and do business with everyone. Russia and India have more to gain by working WITH China than against it. The world would be a much more peaceful and prosperous place, including the US, if the US just minded its own business.

I think the world agreed to not just US hegemony, but to super-hegemony in the style of Rome, the world needs consolidation for global projects. But the last decade has shown that this is not a world empire, but an unstable, irresponsible country with an atomic baton and a fleet, from which you can expect ANYTHING. Some clowns and villains in the presidential elections, now an old man with dementia, the funeral of a fentanyl addict in a platinum coffin at the state level, some invasions of the capitol - this is the internal policy not of a world empire and a city on a hill, but of a developing country, which is sometimes disrupted into excesses. In foreign policy, everything became clear after they overthrew a democratically elected president in the middle of Europe and staged a civil war that claimed 14k lives by 2020. And now they have brought matters to a hot war, and God knows what the prospects of all this are. And don't tell me they had nothing to do with it and didn't play a major role in it. I do not think that the elites in Europe and the rest of the world agree on such an overlord. The only question is whether they will be able to reduce its influence, and ideally to deprive of atomic weapons, before it causes too much damage to the world around.

Your idea won't work because the Indians hate the Chinese. Chinese people don't care much about India but the Indians have a massive superiority complex when they think about China. This is an extremely complex issue but I will try to explain in this TLDR: Indians are a deeply colonized people. For generations Indians where under British rule and have adopted a kind of self hatred for colored peoples. Many Indians love White people and worship Western countries. After winning their independence, India basically adopted the political, linguistic, and philosophical outlook of their former colonial masters, while China completely rejected Western Liberal Democracy. The whole world thought India would easily beat China because of these reasons. Indians themselves thought they were on right path. But alas that did not happen, in fact the opposite happened. In the early 1980s China was more poor than India. But by 2020 China is MUCH richer and far more developed than India. China has become so successful that every political and economic theory of development was thrown out the window. China has become the envy of the developing world. Even the West is becoming afraid of China, and with fear comes a certain level of respect. The kind of respect that Indians have always desired from the West. In short, China's massive success is a constant reminder to Indians of their failures. It's a constant reminder that even with the whole world backing them, supporting them, and cheering them on, they lost to China. India's self-hatred and blind worship of the West caused India to neglect it's own cultural/historical circumstances and adopt Western economic/political systems that are ill suited to solve it's own problems. India projects this self-hatred towards China. But in truth Indians are really disappointed in themselves. Perhaps one day Indians will see their mistakes and fix their country. Until that day comes they will project all their anger and disappointment at the Chinese. Whom the Indians see as racially inferior to White people, yet somehow defied all odds and are dominating at everything. If China had remained a poor and wretched country, India and the West would love and pity them.

Ever since 2014 NATO has been secretly training the Ukrainian military to effectively fight against Russia, thus it is NATO expertise which has allowed Ukraine to put an effective resistance to Russia. As the professor says, this in turn endangers the entire planet because under an existential threat states can resort to, indeed, risky tactics.

Dear Mark Slinger, I have some vivid memories from the horrible war in Viet Nam. While the average number of civilians killed within a war zone is typically between 3 to 5 killed for each combatant soldier killed, when “advanced weapons” are used, that ratio can climb to 10:1 (as you have stated so well). However, short and long-term afflictions such as Malnutrition and Infectious Diseases raise this horrible ratio even higher. Last but certainly the worst consequences of war are the INJURED SURVIVORS who often suffer from severe long-term incurable disabilities such as PHYSICAL AND PSYCHICAL PAIN, DEPRESSIONS, and PTSD, resulting in astoundingly high SUICIDE RATES THAT ARE RARELY ACCURATELY REPORTED BY GOVERNMENTS (and those governments usually hide these final “statistics”). The same happens with the children who are orphaned by War. ***Thank You for your cogent remarks. Salomè (Live Well, in Peace). He is wrong to insinuate that Putin could be dangerous and has to resort to nuclear weapons. Nothing new here, any leader would counteract any existential threats. Why single out Putin? The US's bullish intention to control resources in the world is the problem. It really tries hard to dictate India , Russia and China but in vain. The professor's prescription of containing China is simply stupidity. What does he think that India, Russia, and China would bow to the US's manipulation? He is wrong to suggest this approach. It is just like a champion plays tennis against a worthy opponent, and instead of improving and focusing on his own skills, he hires hitmen to break the opponent's legs. Russia is less dangerous than the US and European clowns. They are the most dangerous ones. If they they go home, then he will leave them alone. In the beginning of an official WWIII, Russia will shut off all energy valves from Russia and simultaneously hypersonic missiles would hit European command centers and petroleum infrastructure that bring Europe to its knees. Since it is no longer a special operation, the firing power will increase exponentially. If things escalate, then special mushrooms will appear all over planet earth.

It's always war time since the Cold War. It's never going to end for West vs Russia. Now we have a another main power from the East to rise. This professor wanted peace but it's unlikely. Russia poke US and US poke Russia via proxy wars given their historical events. Just remember that Russia and China stole US nuclear know how. So it's never a friendly perception. I have doubts of his statue given his supports to Russia. Russia and China are working together against US through the last 20-30 years. China is a beast of itself. I think India should be the counter and influence against China. This war doesn't have a winner and loser to both countries. Best pray to the innocent people. To me, this resemble the 3 kingdoms in China (Romance of the 3 Kingdom). 1 shall win. To me, China is winning in long term effect. With this war, China is happily no matter who win. Russia's military and economic power have decreased dramatically. Also China look at the full effect of a full sanction and see all those new military hardwares being display.

I don't really see the world uniting against America anytime soon. Primarily because the US is a relatively benign Super Power. The US has most of the resources it needs at home. There aren't any territories the US is desperate to have it doesn't already. So everyone can trust the Americans not to violate their territorial integrity. The US protects the sea lanes and for the most part ensures global peace and stability and all the US really asks for is peace and trade. Unless you disrupt and threaten the peace and trade the Americans will tolerate a lot. Saudi Arabia is a far worse country than Iran, but the Saudis largely play by America's rules while Iran actively antogonizes America and propagates violence across the Middle East. As America retreats from the global order it has built and that order crumbles I think a lot of people are going to learn the hard way and very violently how central America is to global peace and prosperity. I think you're going to see a lot of countries begging America to help them and prop them up.

To me it's more interesting to know what will happen after Russia occupies Donbas and the southern regions of Herson and Zaporizhia. What will Russia do then? Will it keep going or what? And if not, what will Ukraine do? Will it just keep shelling the Russian soldiers in those regions every day? One Russian (I forgot who) said that the "demilitarization" will take 5 to 10 years. What does this mean? These are the things that personally interest me more that whether or not Ukraine will be neutral. We don't even know what Ukraine will look like and when the war will officially stop.

  • @tyfive

    @tyfive

    2 жыл бұрын

@@Perplexer1 I have a very bad feeling about this war. Not only are the sanctions slowly killing the west, it is so incredibly dangerous! World War 3 is only one dumb mistake away! Also nobody in the west wants a diplomatic solution, and I don't see how this will end. I mean most western politicians basically said we are in war with Russia right now. This is pure insanity! There were these crazy statements and ideas on the first day but how will this be 3 years from now? Putin offered to deliver weat if the west stopped the sanctions. This offer was rejected - still can't believe it... What this and the statement from the video combined show is absolutely shocking to me: It's not about peace or human rights or even the wealth of our countries, it's all about fckng ideology. That means the war - even if Russia left Ukraine tomorrow -, the war won't end. Then all this trouble with China... I feel like we will suffer. Hard. Russia on the other hand has time on its side. Honestly I have no clue what they're plans for Ukraine are but maybe they themselves have not made a decision yet. Like I said time is on their side. Some say they want to lure Poland into Ukraine to then "defend" Ukraine and beat their army but who knows... Apart from that from my experience Russia certainly will not attack NATO. That definitely is bs. I think priority number one is to make sure Ukraine will never be part of NATO in any way. Ukraine will be neutral or part of the Russian alliance. One of these things will defenetly happen. They put too much effort into this war already to stop now. The problem is that it is the same with the west. What they don't seem to understand is: in a war there is no winner. It never should have come so far!

American needs to accept a position as simply another player in a multipolar world of players. What bloody proxy war?! This isn't just Russia vs USA. Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and the rest of EU have a very keen interest in letting Kremlin know that the days of bullying are OVER. Invading Ukraine, Putin crossed a line into a territory he is not allowed to stay in, and the Russian nukes is the ONLY reason Europe hasn't cleaned house with the Russian forces within Ukraine's border. If you want to know how upset Europe is, Sweden is about to abandon over 200 years of neutrality, joining NATO. Germany not only permanently scrapped the Nordstream 2 project, the crown in their long term plan to forge a bond with Russia like the Coal&Steel union did with France, that was the beginning of the EU. Germany also discarded the pacifistic posture they clinged to ever since the end of WWII. Even the most neutral country of all, Switzerland, and the Putin-hugging Hungarians went right in with the sanctions. Then there is Ukraine... they're no puppets to anyone, they are a sovereign nation, with a president who got higher rate of votes than any American president could even dream about, and unlike Putin and Luckatjenkov, that happened in free and fair elections without tossing the opposition in jail for fictitious crimes or poisoning them. Had they wanted to be bound to Kremlin, they would been long time ago, but they have absolutely NO desire to become part of a repressive and oppressive USSR 2.0

He's speaking the right thing the US should have been doing. The problem is the current US Administrations is moving further away from Russia as its potential ally while trying to contain China and began openly fighting Russia at the same time, which is impossible. I remember during Reagan's Administrations direct talks with the Russian leadership (at that time a hardcore Communist totalitarian) on controlling and limiting even reducing the production of nuclear arsenal between the two superpowers was possible and in fact was a success. The problem is that the US Admnistrations especially the Democrats believed that pseudo power vaccum existed after the crumbling of the USSR, made them believe that only the US is left standing and are now trying to recruit former USSR states into its domain, NATO. I remember Rev. Billy Graham in one of his book wrote 'these two nations have worked together in the past to contain and defeat evil to successful end', such alliance and understanding is even more nevessary today as the Communist is advancing unchallenged in most part of the world. I also believe that if Russia-China alliance were to be realized one day it happens Not because the Russian administrations are more attracted to Communism that they form an alliance with Communist China, but more to the reason that the US foreign policy that acting as if it is the only superpower left after end of the Cold War and can do anything it wishes to other nations. The US adminstrations of today are more inclined to follow their own sentiment rather than seeking sensibility, wisdom and prudence. I hope that the new US presidents in the future will put more emphasis on an 'alliance' with Russia.

Just by the troop Nos 40000 troops where never intended to take a 2,8million or so city like Kiev with a 200000 Ukrainian army defending it. it was there as a diversionary tactic to pin the troops there and cut it off from the eastern army Azof brigade which Russia intends to annihilate in this it has been successful. Russia has demonstrated at a great Blood loss to itself that it has gone in soft in order to minimise civilian casualties. It has maintained Ukrainian infrastructure. it has not knocked out railways, bridges, allowed the Ukrainians to keep cell phone networks it allowed the Ukrainian leader to have Zoom conferences with NATO,EU, and American Governments in order to maintain a possible solution which the Ukrainian leader is throwing away ( a peace mandate he was overwhelmingly elected for). any military person will tell you that so far the Russians have not gone in hard and are open to small skirmish losses but in a full on military attack the Ukraine could be reduced to rubble something the Russians demonstrably do not want to do, so far.

Mearsheimer never explains how exactly NATO possessed a legitimate “existential threat”. Prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many European NATO members were not meeting their financial obligations to the alliance, the US was pivoting to Asia, and there was many questioning if the alliance would continue. There was no indication that Ukraine was seriously going to be a member of the alliance even after Russia had already annexed Crimea. So to think that that NATO was going to some how launch an attack in Russia from Ukraine is just not realistic.

Mearsheimer gives no agency at all to what the Ukrainian people may or may not want. Clearly they don’t want to be run by a puppet government friendly to Putin, they’ve looked across the border at Belarus and not liked the look of it. At the end of the day the Ukrainian people are fighting for their freedom and as a British army commander once said, armies don’t wage wars, a country does...the Russian army is fighting for what?...they don’t know and the people back home are not invested in this ‘special military operation’....Ultimately the Russian army will be kicked out, they don’t have the manpower to occupy territory indefinitely and we all know that what Putin really wants is to topple Zelenskiy...that isn’t going to happen.

The oil field is in the Black sea. and Putin already "corners" the energy Market. Why would he tap it, with Bulgaria, Turkey and romania as possible competition? Risky proposition to build an offshore drilling station, with disastrous consequences for all these countries, if a leak a la Deepwater Horizon should occur. It is a Stupidly expensive thing to do. Even if there were no risks.

Sounds reasonable and that's why it doesn't work as an explanation. The issue is not what Russia wants. The issue is that the Leftist/Marxist elements in America must destroy Russia (and the Rural United States) because these people are reprobates who do not accept the fact that LGBTQ+ rights are all that matters in life. War is not waged very often for resources or control--it is waged for more insane issues--like senseless ideology.

I have a mutual solution in addition to that: Russia removes all weapons from Kaliningrad and Belarus, and stops any attempt at Kaliningrad and Belarus being a Bulwark on Nato border. Sounds moronic? See if US sees a country as an existential or homeland security threat, they would get CIA and NGO in there to start a coup/insurgency or just outright start a war with the country. Czech Republic however isn't going to that's just how politic power works if a nuclear holding country says i feel like this is a threat you should take it seriously if it is by Czech Republic no one at the "international community" table gives a fuck they don't run the "international community" like UN members who have veto power. UN members are all self-interested, UN is not a benevolent organization. UN protects the national interest of the big players in it. The enemy politician in Russia and China won't view actions the same way as US. Everyone is so spooked by NATO and US when things like the Iraq War happened, where you can just hold a small flask of white powder and say that's the evidence of WMD in Iraq the enemies just stop trusting anything NATO and US all together, which is fair in my opinion if you sit on opposite side of fence looking in, it's not a great look. There are plenty of shit we can throw at each other, but throwing weapon into Ukraine is exactly opposite of cooling things down in Ukraine, it would just split Ukraine as a country. Right now Ukraine is already becoming a proxy, as supplies are supplied by NATO, NATO + Ukraine vs Russia + Belarus + China. Although China isn't sending weapons in but China is obviously on Russia's side in terms of sanctions. Ukraine is starting to look more and more like Syria. It's just that this time we have Zelensky who is democratic + US instead instead of a dictator + Russia running a country against separatists at the end of the day when dusts settle, Ukraine doesn't have anything win out a war.

@@kaewakoyangi8071 I think you are getting confused. Firstly it was Nuland from US state dept who orchestrated the maidan coup in 2014, and installed a puppet govt. US, UK then trained and supported the Azov Nazi Batalion, just like they did with Al Qaeda, for simple reason, that US needed radicals to create chaos to keey the Russian busy with internal conflict for years to come. Ukraine govt, by then was infiltrated with Nazi politicians, who wanted to "cleanse" just like Hitler did, clean out eastern part of Ukraine aka Donbas region, as these were mostly Russian speaking people with russian ties, due to it being apart of USSR. Ukrainian Nazis have been shelling them on and off for 8 years, and for 8 years Putin asked UN to investigate but each time vetoed, shut down by US, UK. Please do educate yourself more before making comments on subject matter you know little about. BTW I am not Russian.
