As an intermediate guitar player looking to level up your overall guitar playing skills, John Mayer is a perfect study partner! In this lesson we'll learn how he uses his fingers, the pentatonic scale and CAGED chords to create some Mayer Magic! Now, those are some pretty big subjects individually, so to combine them all is not an easy task! However, with this very cool little study piece track that we've created, we can guide you through all the elements in a gentle and fun way!

I played lead guitar in my youth - I've not picked up a guitar in 35 years and thinking I should take it up again - About to purchase a fender which I am in double mind - BUT, your video and teaching is truly inspirational and motivational - this is indeed a superb tutorial and well delivered - I am going to your site and ordering my equipment - hope one day I can play as well as you do - Outstanding!!!

Is there a video which shows which caged shapes matches which pentatonic box? All the videos I‘ve seen just show the shapes, but not what‘s the corresponding pentatonic box.

The E I am using here is the C Shape CAGED chord. It's relatively simply to play and you can find the full lesson here: www.yourguitaracademy.com/courses/electric-intermediates/lessons/essentials-part-2 :)

Great lesson, but in the backing track you are playing the part that you are teaching - I was expecting a true backing track without that part. I realize you might stop playing at some point in the track, but I would rather have a clean, true backing track.

John Mayer didn't invent this style. R&B guitarists have been doing it since the 60's.

Very true and very good point! It's also fair to say that a lot of these licks are straight out of the Hendrix catalogue! 😀

@@yga Hendrix also learned this style from R&B guitarists such as Curtis Mayfield and others.
Geez…. Are you teaching guitar or are you teaching math? You ramble on and on about every note… Forget the physics for a few minutes and just teach the lick!
