Lyrics:
Take all of your wasted honor
Every little past frustration
Take all of your so-called problems
Better put 'em in quotations
Say what you need to say
Walking like a one man army
Fighting with the shadows in your head
Living out the same old moment
Knowing you'd be better off instead
If you could only
Say what you need to say
Have no fear for giving in
Have no fear for giving over
You better know that in the end
It's better to say too much
Than never to say what you need to say again
Even if your hands are shaking
And your faith is broken
Even as the eyes are closing
Do it with a heart wide open, a wide heart
Say what you need to say
Say what you need to say (I say you ought to)
Say what you need to say (I say, well)

No you are not the only one to come searching from the movie Karate Kid. The moment I heard this song in the background I paused the movie and was searching for this song. With in the hour I was playing it on my guitar and singing it. This is a beautiful song. I never heard it before but I can tell you I will be listening to more John Mayer music. This guy is talented. Remember him as the Guitar Guy in the Dave Cheppelle show?

Before my dad died in 2009, this was our favorite song. I was only 9 years old. He always told me to never be afraid of the world, to speak boldly without fear and take beautiful adventures whenever I have an opportunity and not be scared to make mistakes.. I miss him so much. … GUYS THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH . I really love your words of encouragement it means everything to me 🥹🥹🥹thank you guys 🩷🩷

The doctors gave me six months maybe a year to live. This song has played in my head everyday. I sent it to everyone of my family members. I hadn't spoken to my mom in almost 2 years and before that it was 4 years. I took the advice from this song and said it all. Love me or hate me I'm going to say it all and do it all before I die.

Reminds me of my late husband. We watched the movie together long before we knew he'd ever have cancer. He stayed home with me and hospice and we said everything to each other left unsaid which wasn't much as it turned out. This is an important message. Say what you need to say that is loving NOW. I always think of my husband when I listen to this song. It's beautiful and so was he.

Never know where inspiration will come from, this song got me through a tough time. My marriage was ending, and I knew there was nothing I could do to stop it, and it really was for the best. But I listened to this song a few times, and I went into our last meaningful discussion together determined to say whatever I needed to say to walk out of there with a sense of peace. I left it all on the table, and didn't let pride of fear get in the way. I walked out there with a sense of closure, dignity, and few regrets, and it was in large part because of this simple song. Doubt you're reading this, but if so, thank you Mr. Mayer.

My mom was dying from cancer and they sent a nurse to the house that yelled at my mom. They later sent a physician assistant that asked my brother to stay in the room because she could not understand a word my mom was saying. Her English was fine to me. She had been here twenty years. She called me at work and when she talked about the situation she cried. I called the agency and let them know what happened and how my mom felt. I was so scared to call cause (I have social anxiety) They never sent her back to the house. I felt so embarrassed after I got off the phone because I stuttered and sounded ridiculous. My coworkers asked if I was ok. This song later made me feel I did the right thing by my mom and you have to say it even if you don’t sound how you want to. Life is too short. My mom didn’t live long after that but no matter if you are scared or stutter say what you feel. It is priceless. I am still proud of that call no matter how scared I sounded.

This song has very strong emotions into it, the message is not hidden so understanding it should be pretty straight forward. The unfortunate thing is that we live in the times where the music is a consumable and where majority of the people tend to focus on hidden and unnecessary things, therefore this beautiful song is what people wouldn’t listen to with the joy. Good thing that we have access to these kind of songs anywhere and anytime.

Fast forward after 31 years - we are still carrying on a long distance relationship, both have gone full circle through life’s challenges and both finding ourselves together again with full of hope, enthusiasm and desire to rekindle our seemingly lost love and friendship that was ripened by time and longingness to be together again - at last! Take all of your wasted honor Every little past frustration Take all of your so-called problems, Better put 'em in quotations Say what you need to say [8x] Walking like a one man army Fighting with the shadows in your head Living out the same old moment Knowing you'd be better off instead, If you could only . . . Say what you need to say [8x] Have no fear for giving in Have no fear for giving over You'd better know that in the end It's better to say too much Than never to say what you need to say again Even if your hands are shaking And your faith is broken Even as the eyes are closing Do it with a heart wide open (a wide heart) Say what you need to say [24x]

This song will always remind me of when I was younger back in elementary and middle school and didn’t have to worry about driving/having a job because I heard this on the radio a lot of times heading to school.Next year will be my time to graduate high school so I’m taking every moment down memory lane while I still can before I head on to adulthood.

Writing a eulogy for my Dad, and seeing so many Post-it notes strewn all over my countertop... So many things said through images from a wonderful film, I'm wondering how to work in this video clip into Dad's eulogy. Wondering how I'm going to deliver such in a timely fashion, tastefully, tactfully, and well, I know how- just go slowly, gently, continue to write a few things here and there, breathe. Focus. Trust that what I need to say will be said, in not only my words, but in my expression. My tears. My laughter. My love. Of my Dad, for being kind-hearted, loving, passionate, and more. Being the kind of Dad I aspire to be to my kids. My gratitude to John Mayer for writing a song that's helped me to "Say". And to You, Dear Reader of Comments, I express my gratitude for giving unto me a bit of your time in reading my words here, an expression of my grief, and of my love for my Dad, and how he taught me to love people just like you. I love you.

@@navureilagiwaila6528 Thank you for your kindness. Dad & I had the benefit of time to say our goodbyes, to bury any hatchets, to find our peace. That his brain cancer rapidly robbed him of his ability to speak was another benefit- I was finally able to get a few words in edgewise! All humor aside, Dad & I were fortunate. We had some forewarning, some time to talk, and listen. Dad taught me so much over the course of things, right up to his passing- some of those lessons required no words at all. Again, Navureilagi, my gratitude to you for your condolences. Please accept mine unto you for your Dad's passing. Respectfully yours, Alan

Just had a Zoom call with my best friend who is in palliative care dying and we are in two different countries. So sad I cannot be there by her side but so grateful I could see her and say exactly what I needed to say one last time. Thought about this song and the beautiful meaning of it. Of the importance of telling our loved ones how much we love them and what they mean to us while they are here. Thought about the movie The Bucket List and why it matters to live life to the fullest. We never know how many days we are given so we can't just sit on the sidelines and watch life pass us by. Embrace the love in your life. 💕

I first heard this song in approximately 2008, at the age of 18, during the end credits of the movie The Bucket List. I was in the beginning stages of the process that would eventually lead me to break away from my manipulative, abusive and controlling father, who took advantage of the money he got for taking care of his blind son along with my general naivety and the trust I had in him that he would never steer me wrong, and become the man I am today... one who doesn't take anyone's crap, and won't hesitate to speak my mind if I have to. This song struck a cord with me back then, because at that time in my life, I didn't have the courage to speak my mind in all situations. That would come later, and ever since the first time I heard it, the message of this song would sometimes play in my head as I undertook my journey toward becoming my own person. It's still not always the easiest thing for me to say what I need to say, but I still try to live up to that message as best I can, even now.
