    I wish John Mayer would try the Snouse Blackbox 2. I'm willing to bet he replaced the BluesBreaker with the Klon due to headroom, and I can guarantee that running the Blackbox 2 on 18 volts (which it can take!) with the boost and presence knobs added to the mix would work extremely well for his tones.

    Around the time after Continuum was released, a forum post surfaced from John where he did some sort of gear interview commentary... It seems I remember that commentary was given somewhere around the Heavier Things era, as John mentions the Full Drive, the Bluesbreaker, but also sang high praises of the Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive... It was quite interesting because he kinda takes a dump on the whole gear/tone chasing pedal obsession thing. I'll see if I was able to find the actual text and will post a link in another comment, as it's too lengthy to copy-paste in full. "Stevie Ray used so much less distortion than you can possibly imagine. He was loud, and the way it hit the tape (and your ear) made that sound. I use a vintage 808, which has some properties that I like, but it is by no means the holy grail of tone. It has it’s place, though. Everything does. Just remember that turning that “cheat” knob too high also cheats you of the natural tonal characteristics of your guitar. Do work that volume knob, though. So what if you don’t have the 600 bucks for an 808? Don’t even worry about it. There are so many pedals designed to emulate it, it’s not even funny. Purists want the original 808 because of some fairly esoteric microchip differences. The Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive is somewhat close, (and dirt cheap!) but it can also have a really harsh high end. (What’s in a name, right?) I think the Fulltone Fulldrive 2 is a FANTASTIC update on the 808. The Keeley-modded TS-808 reissue is very close to an 808. These pedals are what I call “paint chip” close. If you didn’t have an original 808 to A/B with, you wouldn’t know what you were missing. If you’re looking for a good “edgey” tone, check out the Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal from the early ‘90s. Not the BB-2 (bad), but the original. It’s a great beefy sound that colors strat pickups in a really interesting way. The tone knob is like a “B.B.” dial. If you feel like your guitar just won’t cut it in the mix with your band, but you don’t necessarily want more overdrive, check out the Fulltone Fat-Boost, or the Keeley Katana. Kick it on for a solo, and it’s like having your own personal mixing engineer ride your fader. I use a Keeley-modded Boss BD-2 pedal as well. It’s got it’s own thing going on, and I like it. So many pedals are cool, and most every one has a place for something. It’s fun to listen to a pedal and then play to it’s strengths. Oh, here’s another misconception: True bypass is all-around better than buffered (regular) bypass"

    hey Justin, i love your inputs regarding JMs Gear! i also love reading your inputs on JM Gear FB Page. I am still pretty confused though, when does JM use the different overdrives? like in which instance, let´s say in Belief, does he use the TS10 for it? and for the solo, how does he boost the drive? in which particular order? or let´s say, when does he specifically use the Centaur? thanks a lot!

  • @JustinJeske

    @JustinJeske

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Justin (great name by the way 😎), this is somewhat hard to describe in a KZread comment, but generally the TS10 is the main overdrive sound. For most solo's he stacks the Klon/Blues Breaker into the TS10 as the main lead tone, especially bigger outro ones for example. The TS10 is used on its own for lighter solos. The Blues Breaker and Centaur serve different purposes on their own in the different eras. Lighter overdriven/more than the base sounds is the jyst. Think the harmony parts on Slow Dancing during the intro, that is usually Centaur but also has been the Katana. I'm going to be doing a lot more videos on this on the channel to fully discuss this all in detail but if you have any specific questions feel free to message me on Instagram!

    @@JustinJeske great name you have as well 😉 thanks so much for the answer, i am at least at ease now how to tweak the stuff that i have. there are a few Pedals that I like to ditch to have a closer sound with JMs. eg. my TS is Ibanez JD9, which i think is nowhere as near as TS10 🤣 i did all the tweaking and it's really difficult. As for the Bluesbreaker, i have a Protein and it's Blue side, i hope the green one would at least get a little Centaur sound out of it as it os based from a Nobles. But all things aside, at least i now somehow have an idea on how he uses the Drives. And yes, an extensive Video about this would be great! Looking forward to it! Keep safe, man! 😊

    Been trying the WTLI tone for weeks, only way to get that creamy solo for Gravity and Slow Dancing was stacking 2 tube screamers (mini spark + mini ts + ts9). I got pretty close! Have you tried anything similar? Also, having place the ts9 before my bluesbreaker gave me something very close to the Belief intro and solo. Also, combining ts9+soul food was way better than soul food and ts9, I don't know, its the opposite than JM uses but gave me a very similar tone, and the other way around got me a very different sound. Cheers!

    Hey Marcelo! I haven't tried the 2 Tube Screamers like that, I know John has very briefly experimented with 2 TS10's, but whatever works for your rig! I do however think that in terms of your comment on ordering, the Tube Screamer last gives you that mid hump and classic TS sound we know with JM. Having the Blues Breaker or BB-2 after it can give great tones but would, from purely a tone perspective, be a bit of a departure from that specific sound. I would not recommend having the BD-2 after the Tube Screamer personally. I know John was experimenting with the placement of the Blues Breaker when that and the Klon were both on his board in like 2008/09 but that was for only a few shows. Hope that helps!

    @@JustinJeske Fuzz, Overdrive, they’re just different intensities of the same effect, distortion. Making a distinction between them just becomes pointless when a fuzz on the lowest gain could be an overdrive and an overdrive on the highest gain could be considered fuzz.

  • @JustinJeske

    @JustinJeske

    2 жыл бұрын

    Well yes, but there still is classification of them. It’s why the NG-2, the OctaFuzz (key word fuzz), etc, is called a Fuzz. It’s why the Tube Screamer is called an Overdrive. It’s still incredibly easy to actually separate the characteristics of Fuzz and Overdrive for the most part. I have never plugged my NG-2 and thought “oh yeah this is a great overdrive sound”. There are a handful of pedals that do a wide range of the spectrum, Broadcast AP for one, where it can do cleanish boost all the way into some fuzz-like tones. But that’s besides the point with this video here.

  • @theoemanuelsson7465

    @@JustinJeske You’re right but I still feel like it should’ve been included in the video since it’s a quite important pedal in JM’s arsenal and it would be pointless to make a seperate 30 second video detailing John’s history of fuzz pedals. I guess I just feel like it would’ve been smart to include all of John’s distortion instead of just the overdrive pedals.
