    JM is the real deal. I'm 60. I was lucky enough to see all the greats except Jimi. In my humble opinion JM belongs in the top tier of guitarists. The work he's doing with Dead and Company is phenomenal. Somehow he's managed to capture Garcia's essence while making it own. This video alone proves the validity of my statement.

    For me, this solo is pretty much as the BB used to say, that when he's playing he feels like he's talking: here, while being completely different from BB stuff, I feel like JM is talking though his Stat. Amazing!

    A John Mayer fan searches on KZread "Eric Clapton Promises" with the intention of listening to just that. Serendipitously ends up finding this instead. Had no idea this took place or existed - Great upload!

    Pretty sure it's more than that. He's singing through the guitar - that can't be reduced to just a thought about key of the song, and next chord change.

    @@fitzy1093 Even with that, there are near endless possibilities of things you can play within a certain key following chord changes. He has a great idea of what he wants to play and his skills allow him to do it on the spot. That kind of ear-hand coordination is what makes someone a great guitarist.

    I can't improve on the comments so I'll just agree. John kills it with the improv. The strat us gorgeous and what a fucking sound. what I love most about JM, and Eddie Vedder, is their absolute respect for what came before. Call them covers but they sure sound like respect to me.

    JM really did nail this cover. Actually, he knocked it waaaaay out of the universe with that otherworldly riff circa 3:15. - truly rips through the multiverse with that string of epic fretboard activity... wow. All that being said....CLAPTON IS GOD!!!!

    I love this version of this song. The song itself gives the impression that the songwriter is happy about the breakup and basically saying "good riddance," and then John adds this bittersweet element in the song that Clapton might not have initially intended.

    Lol he didn’t change the key of the song. He’s still playing in the key of g major during the solo, but I do agree that solo is overflowing with emotional impact

    John Byers nope he switches into G minor during some bits of the solo to give it a bluesy feel, he does it with lots of other songs and if the song is minor then he goes to the relative major and plays in the minor of that

    It's a beautiful song.Clapton does a nice studio version ,and Mayer adds an excellent solo at the end. I always liked Clapton's country phase.

    JM is a master. His solos make sense and are adding something valuable to the song. He studied lots of the greats - and creates something new inbetween the classic roots of the lead guitar. Great!

    As a lifelong student of JM’s style and tendencies, I don’t know where this solo came from. It’s unlike any of the other fantastic solos we’ve watched him lay down. Just when you think you’ve seen the breadth of his ability he comes out with something this PERFECT. Bravo

    @@user-bt3tj6we7b do you even play guitar, these solos are 100% improvised. Sure there’s some songs where live he plays the solo based on the studio recorded solo but if you’ve watched liveshows of him playing you notice that not once ever he plays the same exact solo twice. He always switches it up either partly or just the complete solo, and it’s always him just playing what comes up to him. Literally every blues guitarist does that, it’s not a weird thing, even I do it when I play live…

    @@niekvanwensen yes i play guitar since 25 years ..but that' not the point. guitarists like john layer or eric clapton never reproduce the solo like the studio recorded but before going on stage they rehearse many times ...they can' t improvise and be sure before going on stage that the solo is gonna be very good they know what they're doing ! you forgot about rehearsals or what you think they saiy ok let' s play promises without rehearsals ??come on
