+Frank H That's because he's such a suck-up he embarrassed himself. He did the same with other blues players, was so obvious about it like they were too stupid to realize what he was doing. There are several reasons why he went to playing pop songs on the top 40 and this was one. It got to where he wasn't as welcome as he used to be on the blues scene.

Easy on John Mayer, guys. Remember the age and experience difference. While I'm not a Mayer fan per se, he's giving it his all, and I'm certain he's feeling rather humble, sitting next to a "lump o' legend" like B.B. That's a helluva lot to live up to in my book. John Mayer…he did alright! Watch him between 2:40 and 2:50. John is observing and marvelling at the legend of B.B. sitting right next to him! You might want to also consider that pop guitar is John Mayer's forte, not the blues, though he plays blues very well. I watched Carlos Santana once at a "jamming" thing with several other rock illuminaries. He was obviously uncomfortable, and just couldn't seem to keep up. But in his own environment, with the staccato picking, the bent and held notes, the salsa feel, he is untouchable. Please be kind to those who try, and give credit where it's due.

Mayer is a far more technical guitar player than BB. Mayer dabbles in many genres and does very well in all of them. There isn't a more multi genre talented guitarist that I know of...

He (John Mayer) needs to make a blues album,he's that good I think

About a year ago, wheb I firat started playing the blues and all I knew were a few licks and two boxes of the blues one of my friends who is an amazing guitarist and his friends laughed on my playing as being very simple and slow like BBs, while my friend introduced me to Mayer and said that this is real playing, but now, a year after, as I keep going in deeper and deeper into the blues, I keep circling back to this video, showing the old school BB with one of his biggest fans, people here keep talking who's better and why, but people​ keep forgetting that what John is playing is actually derived from BBs licks and style, same as SRV kept drawing his main inspiration from Albert King, SRV wasnt better, he was a mix of himself and his influences, now Im thinking about that guy, laughing about my playing and all I can think is, how blind can a person be trying to compare things that are not even the same, and more than that, I wish I wpuldve played a single note as good as BB, quit comparing, listen to music evolving, long live BB and Mayer

wow i have weird staticy noises a bit after that, wasn't paying attention at 1 40 but .. I've listened to this recording many times, and it never had that before - although this is the first time I've listened to this particular upload - so if anyone wants to bookmark it, I suggest finding another upload of it

at 12:05 when he was like "I'm gonna play my own thing for BB on the guitar." - THAT was when he started actually playing blues. Before that he was trying to impress the audience with being John Mayer. At that point his soul came out more.

I remember 40 years ago being at his concert in Lexington, Ky And after playing his heart out for over 2 hours, he sat down at front of stage and signed autographs and spoke to fans for what seemed to be another 2 hours! Not only is he one of the most gifted musicians to ever walk this earth, but a sweet, sweet man. I'll see you again B.B !

being a huge john mayer fan i would have to agree. hes showing off his chops a little too much

John sounds so messy next to BB. Every note the big guy played was dripping with intent whereas John just sounded. Y'know? It's just noises he's playing to prove he can play guitar. Okay we get it you've got fast fingers, I just wish you'd do something of meaning with them.

+Danny I agree. I think John Mayer was very nervous and anxious to prove to BB King how good he was, that it actually ruined his guitar play. However Mayer can play with a lot of feeling! Especially if you listen to gravity for example.
