This might be my favorite era of JM... by this point, he had truly become a master of the guitar... he found the perfect blend of BB, Clapton, Hendrix, Stevie, etc. while still keeping his own style. You want a reggae vibe, JM has got you... you want a blues vibe, JM will do it... you want a R&B/Jazz fusion, yup, he's got that too. Wait, does the record label want bubble gum acoustic pop? Yup, JM crushed that as well.

To me, this is just the true definition of virtuosic guitar playing. Shredding is impressive, but almost anyone can do that with enough practice. This, on the other hand, is having the *skill* to shred, but knowing how to hold back and only play what you *need* to play. Musicianship, particularly the blues, is as much about the space between notes as it is the notes themselves. John Mayer also uses more than one technique in every performance -- slapping, harmonics, finger picking, etc. to add even more depth and personality to his playing. It is a sight to behold....pure talent.

I think him, Lady Gaga and probably some others did the same thing. Its unfortunate, but music like blues/jazz just doesn't sell. The general public and radio listening folks don't care about it... to further illustrate my point - go listen to the radio and tell me how often you hear songs that aren't "Your Body is a Wonderland" and the other few big hits he has - you won't hear them. Same with Gaga. Obviously I cant know this for sure, but I'd be willing to bet money they started out with pop because they wanted to make a living performing music and it was either pop or it be a weekend thing for the rest of their lives. Now that they've got a solid income flowing in, they can make the music they want to make and do what they want to do. It sucks.

The result was spectacular and my favorite part of this! The bass drum triplet, snare crack and hi hat sizzle and the way it fits with what John is doing and perfectly leads back into the groove. So good! And you can see John crack a little smile right after it at 3:27. I’ve been coming back to watch this video for years, lol.

Pure talent and what soul this guy has, such a wonderful groove, didn't want it to stop, guess I'll just have to play it again and again and again and again 😀
