I love how in the story, they called John dumb as rocks as he literally is. He chose to build a house in the place where Pinkerton were still looking for ex van der linde gang members. He should’ve thought back to Colter and said, let’s move east.

i honestly don’t think anything would’ve worked for john. he has a face that’s very hard to mistake, a name that’s wanted all over the country, and a past that would always catch up to him. if he went east he would’ve found more civilization, if he went west civilization would’ve followed. his only option really was to dig in and enjoy the time he had left. red dead is about the end of an era, john was the last of it. with the wild west quickly being tamed by the turn of the 20th century, there was no place for him to go. outlaws were outlawed. everywhere, he would’ve been tried and hanged

There's a book in GTA V called "Red Dead" by a J Marston in Frank's mansion.

Agreed as far as Hosea's earlier warnings - even Arthur's. As much as Abigail cared for and tried to change John's 'habits', there were times he really didn't have a choice and couldn't and she refused to see it. Had he not helped with the ranch, he could've been out of a job as the ranch lost and would continue to lose money - and that guy did threaten Abigail as well. Had he not killed the guys in front of Jack, he'd be dead - possibly Jack too. Had he not gone after the ones who stole his wagon, he'd be out a wagon. And so on. She meant well, but there were times he was right to do what he did or he really didn't have a choice. Had John not gone with Sadie and Charles, chances are they'd have been killed. What's to stop Micah one day running into John or Abigail beyond that. If somehow they were able make it and kill Micah, then Ross would've found the body anyway and eventually found John as he did in the game. There was that point of no return as you mentioned with Milton. Once that passed, John had a date with destiny no matter what he chose or chose not to do. Excellent video as always Phil.

I think it was a combination of things some of which were never in John's control. Yeah, killing Micah probably helped Ross track him down. It was not a wise move, and he probably should have listened to Abigail, maybe tipped off the law to let them handle Micah. Yet that was not the event that ultimately sealed his fate. It was the things he did a decade earlier which accomplished that. It was back then that he triggered the obsessions and hatred which festered and warped Edgar Ross's morals and character. Ross however decided by himself to go after the gang members, two of whom had fled the country. He had no jurisdiction in Mexico, and no legal justification for what he did to John and his family to get at them. Ross corrupted the law for his own ends, eventually committing many of the same heinous crimes the gang did and more, including murder, extortion, entrapment, kidnapping, obstruction of justice, manipulation of a crime scene, falsifying records, and abuse of power...to name just a few of the big ones. The gang members weren't even the threat they once were when they rode together, particularly John. Ross knew this, and he was selective about going after them. Charles, Sadie, Karen, Abigail, and even Uncle were just as guilty of killing Pinkertons as Bill, Javier, Dutch, and John. When he found John, he also found Abigail, Charles, Sadie, and Uncle with him. But Ross left them alone. Karen was dead already. Then when it was all over, Ross decided not to keep up his end of the bargain which he himself invented, instead choosing to assassinate John because of his own personal animosity. He role played as judge, jury, and executioner to get it done. Ross was as much of a gangster as John was. Being the leader, he actually acted more akin to Dutch or Colm than John. Ross going after the Van Der Linde gang isn't very much different than Dutch going after the Braithwaites. The thing that distinguished the Pinkertons from the Van Der Linde gang and all the other outlaw gangs was the badge, not the law. None of those decisions John had any power to change regardless of his behavior. Ross could have tried to take John to trial and have him hung but wanted to murder him instead and leveraged his badge to do it in a lawless bloody ambush no different than the O'Driscoll ambush on Shady Belle...aside from the odds and the outcome. John's death was "caused" by nobody else but Ross. And he was a dick about it to boot. It is true though that John did unwittingly help Ross do it and he certainly earned severe punishment during his time in the gang despite managing to escape a reckoning for over a decade.

"Yea revenge is a luxury we cant afford" truer words hasnt been spoken. However i think Abagail and John are both right here. Abagail was right that he shouldve left Micah be. However John is right that if wasnt for Arthur Beeches Hope wouldnt be possible

I reckon John is the deepest character in gaming because he had to kill his comrades to protect his family only to be played by the government. If you look at the early chapters of rdr2, John was already questioning Dutch's decisions while Arthur was oblivious to it until he was diagnosed.

2:40 i always had the thought that Dutch left John behind here as a way to set him free from the gang, either in death or as a way for him to make a fresh start. after all, Arthur insisted! if dutch had sent any of the gang after John and they had found him alive, they either would have asked him to stay (Charles or Sadie), been hostile towards him after Dutch has been connecting the dots (Bill or Havier), or just straight up killed him (Micah) - so this was a way of Dutch allowing John to leave the gang without actually having to say it out loud ... but John came back anyways

After going back through the story I just realised that John's "I had no choice" lines are almost the same as Dutch every time he did something crazy he would be like "what choice did we have, were just survining"

The death of John was something that to this day I still can't get over how it made me feel at the time. It was one of the only game deaths that I can say was on some level traumatizing. Arthur's was not that and I don't think it deserves to even be compared to Johns honestly. Arthur's death was epic and heroic and you saw it coming from a mile away and had all the time you needed to prepare for it. You literally knew ahead of time it was coming so there wasn't really any shock factor about it. that isn't a bad thing, it was still tragic and so well written but in terms of how sad and shocking and impactful it was? John wins no question. His death was so senseless and cynical and done out of nothing but greed and ruthlessness because aam wanted some more medals from his Government lawman career. John was nothing but another trophy to him and the impact johns death has on everyone in his life is even more tragic and leaves you with this dark empty feeling when you see where his son ends up. There's just so much more to his death that leaves a lasting impact on you that Arthur's death just doesn't have.

You're so right about John's death. It was shockingly sudden. John himself never really knew how deliberate and strategic his death was. To die hoping your family will be safe and never actually live to see it happen is really depressing.

@@angebish yeah true. If they ever do get around to making that Red dead 1 remaster they really need to extent the epilogue and let us see what happens to Jack. I'm not a fan of multiple choice endings in games because I feel its less satisfying and leaves unnecessarily questions unanswered but I wouldn't even mind a couple of different ending paths for Jack based on what the player feels he should do with his life. If they did write a specific ending for him though all I really want is to see him do something that at the very least leaves a glimmer of hope for his future. Like they should make a few missions where he goes to McFarlanes ranch to catch up with Bonnie and opens up a little and has some family friends to keep him centered and then I would like to see him meet a girl he falls for and then they can have the McFarlanes send some ranch hands to help him get beaches hope back to its former condition. I imagine this being similar to the epilogue of red dead 2 where it has that montage of them building it and that could be a nice little nod to those missions by bringing that same exact style of montage back only this time its jack instead of John. I don't really know where it would go from there but that would be enough for me honestly. They can still leave it more or less open ended but I just want to see Jack have people in his life and know he's not alone or doomed to repeat his father's mistakes for sure. I know this might interfere with the cynical and dark ending we get with the original ending in red dead 1 so that's why I think it should still be left open ended as to whether or not Jack sticks with it and commits to the ranch life but it would be nice to know he still has that choice given to him in the end.

@@pyroAdapt I doubt if Rockstar is ever going to give us RDR1 remastered but hell yes, I'd love to play as Jack and see his story continue (and end). I guess, as mysterious as Jack and his whereabouts are, Rockstar did intentionally leave his story open for interpretation. Who knows, maybe we would be blessed with a whole another separate game with him as the protagonist.
