John Lennon's Death - 12.08.80 - A Television News Chronology

This is my compilation video of the news reports concerning the murder of John Lennon, Monday night, December 8th, 1980. I had just purchased a Sony Betamax SL-5200 video cassette recorder a few months before this tragic event. I was recording the Monday Night Football game being broadcast on ABC TV and my local ABC affiliate, KTVK, channel 3, in Phoenix, AZ.
The first "breaking news" bulletin was delivered on ABC TV's Monday Night Football game between the New England Patriots at the Miami Dolphins. Play-by-play announcer, Frank Gifford, told his sidekick, Howard Cosell, to tell America what they already knew in the booth.
After the game, our local affiliate, KTVK, channel 3, Phoenix, AZ, led with the story with news anchor, Dave Nichols, reporting. Next, was ABC News Nightline, hosted by Ted Koppel. Included in the Nightline broadcast were reports by Rose Ann Scamardella, Geraldo Rivera and Lynn Sherr.
In the days to come, I will be uploading all the videos which I recorded the next day, Tuesday, Dec. 9th, 1980, presenting all the news coverage of Lennon's murder, including all the coverage on ABC TV's "Good Morning America", with host David Hartman, the NBC Nightly News coverage, featuring news anchor, John Chancellor, and an NBC news special which aired at 11:30 pm EST, "John Lennon: The Man and His Music", hosted by Jane Pauley.

I was 12 and awake in bed when I heard my father call my 18 year old sister to the living room. She immediately started crying. My oldest brother, 26, considered travelling from our home in Louisiana to New York for the memorial. Such a tragic loss to the the world. He was one of a kind.

Thanks for the upload! It was especially interesting to see a clip of KTVK's 10 PM news from 1980. As you may know, clips of KTVK's news from the station's ABC era (pre-1994) are very rare. If you have any more in your collection, may I ask you to consider adding them to KZread? I know that many people would be extremely grateful!

The memories of this horrible day are these: 1) Being called by a co worker who told me that Howard Cosell just announced on Monday Night Football that John Lennon had died. I thought that she was joking around but then I turned on the game and heard it for myself. 2) My dad was LIVID that the drug taking Beatle ended coverage of the hostage crisis. As if he cared. That last one pissed me off so much that I left the house for a couple of days. He was still angry but I think he understood my sadness.

There was one player in the entire National Football League that was born in England on 12-08-80 when Lennon was shot dead. What are the odds that he would be on screen the moment Howard Cossell announced Lennon's death? Furthermore, what are the odds that the kickers first name would also be John. John Smith kicked for the Patriots for a decade and even made a pro bowl.

The news was literally breaking in the ABC News department. Howard only announced because it was finally confirmed. MNF was usually the most watched program of the week. And he announced before the final play in regulation. If it was in the first quarter or something, I could see a newsbreak. The game wouldve been over in a minute if the field goal was made and it would have gone straight to localnews and Nightline 30 minutes. Howard was just the man in the booth and could call it right there. Ted wouldve needed 5-10 minutes, so might as well wait 30 minutes for his Nightline to make it official.

The announcement came on the last play of regulation where the game might have been decided. I first heard of John Lennon death on a movie called imagine on lifetime then I saw the monday night football footage on yt and learned thats how the US knew about Lennon death more than 5 years after sean was born and during the year he turned 40. Earlier in the day a picture of Lennon hugging yoko naked was taken before it was published in rolling stone to promote the hit album double fantasy which did ok before the tragedy and since then became a huge hit. 21 years later George Harrison died of old age and we still have Ringo and Paul alive. One or two of them might be gone but the music will still be alive for generations to come. The killer is still alive and has been denied parole.
