Listening to John talking about his flaws is very powerful, you see him as a god of music or something like that, it's really hard to remember that he had fears and insecurities like all of us, I guess his greatest strength was the ability to overcome them and create his own path, something that many do not achieve.

I think that this conversation actually reveals how much of a lackluster artist John Lennon truly was. Decent song writer, but certainly not as bright as the other Beatles (minus Ringo). As far as Bowie's concerned, it is not even close. Bowie is absolutely in a different league (That includes all of the members of the Beatles as well) .

Love seeing artists being so respectful and openly admitting their admiration for each other. Two legends.

Guitar and a cognitive piano I've dabbled with a few other instruments why?

I remember the radio dj announcing that the Beatles had officially disbanded. I was in the car with my mother driving and my brothers in the backseat. Everything went silent as we all looked at each other with tears in our eyes and rolling down our cheeks, I was five years old. I was 15 years old when John was murdered and again everything went silent not just here but across the universe. Looking back now I can see that he was one of the people that have that weird light around them and you know that their lives will be cut short and robbed of a destiny unfulfilled. I was fortunate to see David Bowie in concert and will have that cherished memory for the rest of my life. R.I.P. David and John you are and always will be sorely missed.

I was 14 when Lennon was killed. I remember listening to the top 40 radio station at nine o'clock at night and they started playing Beatles songs one after the other which was very weird and got me listening. Then the DJ came on w/the terrible news. I ran downstairs to tell my parents and my Dad was watching Monday Night Football and told me yes, he just heard it announced by Howard Cosell. It was a dark day indeed. After the Beatles, Bowie became my favorite but a few years later, 82 or so when I was a little older. I regret never seeing Bowie live, it was just one of those things, living my life, such as it was. I'm sure you consider yourself very fortunate having seen him.

People comment a lot about John's less attractive character traits - the wife beating, the acid tongue etc. but John was a work in progress. He was a bruised human being trying to be a better one and his journey is what made him so loved and such a brilliant artist.

While Yoko has never said that he was physically abusive to her (though she has described some rather disappointing verbal abuse, possessiveness, and intimidation), there are accounts of John striking Cynthia Lennon, hitting a female reporter who accused him of cheating on Cynthia in the Beatles' early days, and violently throwing May Pang around while he was drunk. I also doubt the second claim (about most verbal abuse coming from women) is true, but I don't know that arguing about it KZread would be very productive.

I cannot believe how humble and honest he was, musically speaking.

One of the realest "superstars" ever. To say that about George and to recognize his own limited abilities in such an honest way is epic. Spirit hugs to that dude.

Lord I miss him, was 12 years old when he was killed and being in England didn’t find out about it until the next day. Came downstairs to find my mum crying her eyes out ( she’d seen the Beatles live twice ) and that set me off too. I went to school that morning and everybody was talking about it, that’s the impact it had on children too. Every morning we had assembly with some type of music and hymns, that morning the headmaster played imagine. Life wouldn’t be the same again.

My older brother thought older people being upset when Elvis died were weak (he's a little short on empathy). Now, when John died, especially the way he died, my brother cried his eyes out...but tried to hide it. At 10, I felt sad for John, my brother, and everybody. Couldn't understand why anyone would want to do such a thing. I still don't...and refuse to utter the perp's name. Fuck him!

Bowie was the first celebrity death I really remember, I was 16 at the time. I'm a tad younger than the rest of you obviously - missed out on John, Freddy, George but I'm just happy to live in a time and place where I can play their music (I had a vague recollection of Jackson, but it didn't hit in quite the same way)

Talking about John's honesty....back in the 70's when The Carpenters were really popular and it was impossible for them to write or sing any bad song (I grew up listening to them) but someone was recalling a time when he and Karen Carpenter were walking out of restaurant in L.A. just when John Lennon was going in. John immediately recognized Karen and stopped to tell her, "You have a very lovely voice!"....when Karen was walking away she turned to the person she was with and in amazement and disbelief about her own talent which everyone in the world knew how great her voice was and a voice unlike any other, but she said, "John Lennon thinks I have a good voice?" She was very surprised at bumping in to John let alone him giving her a compliment. But that's one thing about John, he'll tell the truth, whether it's good or bad. He never minced words. And what's weird is he never thought he had a good voice. I couldn't believe when one guy working in the sound room with John when John was going to be recording one of his sings, he told the guy to F-up his own voice and do whatever he can to make it good and so the guy did whatever but I had no idea he felt that way. I thought his voice was great. Anyway, two wonderful musical people that added much good in our world, John Lennon and Karen Carpenter.

When asked which singer he would love to work with, it is my understanding that Rolling Stones producer Andrew Loog Oldham said John Lennon. Apparently he thought John had the best voice. IMO, John had a quality that no one else had. The was a sincereness to it. Besides, no one in the world could sing 'Mother'.

John may have not liked his vocals but according to George Martin, he had one of those perfect tambre/tones to his voice that made recording it extremely accessible. McCartney's on the other hand cut through a lot of the tapes and was more challenging to record.

hungfao You hit the nail on the head. The one quality John had more than damned near any other singer was credibility - he sang like he meant it. Listen to You Can’t Do That and you’ll really hear it. Paul had a better instrument, actually possibly the most versatile voice I’ve ever heard in a male rock singer, but he didn’t share that quality. I can’t think of anyone else who had/has it to that extent. Roger Daltrey has some of it. Maybe Springsteen.

Brilliant sense of humour. John was amazing. One of a kind.

That was my takeaway, too. Though I didn't find much funny about it. I felt the whole "karmic thing" he refers to is a bit of optimistic spin he adds to what I infer was a thoroughly confusing episode in his life, heroic, to be sure, to be so optimistic in the face of what is only confusing.

It's true; he had a penchant for sketch comedy as well, starring in some sketches with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, as well as limited comedic acting roles. I would never pretend to know that he regretted being a pop star, but probably his truer calling was vaudeville.

Like his last words to the world. He compliments George Harrison and David Bowie. Two towering talents that went on to do really amazing work in the seventies. Bowie continued into the 80s and then Harrison came back with The Travelling Wilburys. He was so self deprecating, he wrote some absolutely memorable and deeply meaningful songs. His solo work was beautiful. So for him to anoint these two artists as the artists of the future it really has meaning. It’s also so sad. I was drawn to John Lennon even as a child. He always stuck out to me while the Beatles were a big deal as being much edgier, he was a true rock n roller.

My biker parents hated the Beatles but I do remember the day john Lennon died they were shocked, I got into Lennon in my teens but David Bowie was my first love and always will be.

Lennon and the Beatles are part of my trinity. At the top are the Beatles. The left side of the trinity where it intersects is Jimi Hendrix. A direct line to the right and where it intersects is David Bowie. The intersection at the right point where Bowie leads right back to the top..the Beatles. All three points on the trinity represent times in my life when things changed for me. Their music influenced me heavily and proved support and backup to where I was heading or trying to discover. In between the lines were other bands, musicians, types of music that influenced the three main points and in turn influenced me. The meeting/recording of Lennon and Bowie tied it all together for me. Two of my main influences..now both gone. God bless them.

A complex artist like Bowie who is a multi-multi-faceted person cannot be desrcribed appropriately in a brief interview or a brief meeting. I agree my comment was only scratching the surface.

Lennon is so humble here. I heard that he played a 'BIG' part of helping Bowie get on the charts and helping him get learn to add more beat to his songs. I've always remembered this.

along with everything else we lost 37 years ago, we lost a great interview. He was so funny, and honest, words just came out. I think you could ask him the same question a week later, and he might give you a totally different answer. Different, but always interesting.

I love Jon's humbleness and giving credit to Geoge. He had every right to be boastful. Much lesser talents have built careers and consider themselves to be all that and a bag of chips.

I believe he had intentions of going for Bowie at one of his Elephant Man showings in New York at the same time. Chapman had a list of people he considered phonies apparently. Can't quite remember it exactly but I read it in a book a few months back.

I recall quite clearly listening this long interview originally broadcast on UK Radio 1 Thurs evenings very shortly before John's untimely death and was captivated by his charm, intelligence and articulated humour. If you get chance to check-out the entire end-to-end interview do so, it's magical.

Wow, love it, a humble man and had his 2 feet on the ground and open of his shortcomings like 'I have limited vocabulary on the guitar' Shows how great he was and a nice man. It was also a great friendship between him and Bowie. Later Bowie became as a kind of 2nd father for Sean, watching over him in Switzerland.

Its nice and interesting to hear John admit that he wouldnt jam around because he felt shy and insecure. Love you John. Youre awesome.

Lennon had no problems to aknowledge the the greatness of some one else. He didn't seem to have any jealously towards other musicians. Even with his former band mates after the very painful ending of the Beatles. That's for sure one of his best character traits.

Johns album had just come out a couple weeks before he was shot, went gold, glad he knew that day, happy he was.....so sorrowful , all these years later can bring tears

The true greats are self deprecating, like John Lennon. They also recognise genius when they see it, because they posses it too. The reason he struck up an instant rapport with Bowie is that they were both towering musical talents, the like of which come along very, very rarely. He and Bowie were also fundamentally decent, fascinating, fiercely intelligent and brilliantly witty - they had a hell of a lot of special qualities in common. John was in such a good place when the unthinkable tragedy happened. He was clearly contented in his private life and back in the recording studio, doing what he did best. There would have been many more hit records, and probably a few more surprising collaborations with other major artists. John would have been an inspiring voice on current affairs, and I think would have championed important causes like conservation and the environment. And what fun he would have had with the internet - my God, he would surely have grabbed the communication age with both hands! The sheer bloody pointless WASTE of his murder by a toxic nonentity is utterly enraging!

What a beautiful down to earth personality. Its both saddening and ironic that John became the victim of what Bowie was singing about in "Fame". Both these artists have shifted culture phenomenally and it saddens me that we now seem to be regressing back to vicious and dangerous/divisive ideals here in the west.

Man. John was so human, and yet so honest. It's weird. He was a horrible human being, but he was also a fine human being. I wonder if he would have made better of himself if he lived on. He spread the message of good, while fighting his own demons. That unfortunately hurt people around him, too. But people clearly liked to be around him. So there were redeeming qualities. He never seemed to shy away from what he was thinking, and just sort of let everything out whenever. He wrote a dis track about Paul, and then him and Paul still made up. I bet it was simply just John putting his feelings into song, and that's how he could express himself. I can't love him, and I'm not sure if I could respect every part of him. But he was bold, and tried to be true to his feelings. That, at least, was admirable.

"Fame" is a great record.

Just came here from Freddie discussing Bowie..that however briefly, John worked with Bowie and Bowie worked with Queen, and it’s all there recorded for posterity, the three greatest artists to come out of the UK working together is such a gift. RIP John, Freddie and David. And at least David got to live out the fullness of his life, and had time for one last burst of super creativity, Freddie and John were taken tragically and far too soon.

I've always loved John and George's honesty. If something was great, they'd say so, but if it was shit they'd say it was shit. Paul and Ringo usually sugarcoat everything, even the lousy stuff.

The self effacing, humble Lennon. Lovely to listen to.

When you forget you jammed with a Legend...you're a Legend.

John was a musical genius. Yet he was humble and insecure about his own brilliance.

Two much-missed guys.

No wonder John is so loved by millions

John and David would have made a great supergroup between the ten of them.

I think he meant that George was more trained in music theory. John and Paul played from self-taught experience. And George Martin, even more classically trained, polished them in the studio.

@@pyrmontbridge4737 George wasn't particularly trained in music theory either. He likely just meant that George was more technically proficient at guitar, and could probably freely improvise better than Lennon could (which doesn't require music theory knowledge).

Only top grade legends don't remember playing on a Bowie Record lol

It is funny how incredibly hostile some of the comments are towards Yoko Ono. Lennon loved her and she was one of only a handful of celebrities invited to Bowie's wedding with Iman in 1992.

I absolutely love how Lennon stripped the process down to the bare truth. "Middle 8th backwards stolen from Stevie Wonder" - that holds the proof of how many people borrow from others. Amazing transparency. For a guy who claims to have bad self esteem.. and maybe that's why, he doesn't ruffle his feathers to be noticed.

@@uscman Controlling? So you must be one of the few people who missed when it all came out as to why she was following him everywhere and she got the blame. HE was controlling and made her come everywhere with him. So much so that during recording sessions if she got up to pee he'd go stand outside the bathroom then accuse her of secretly screwing some man hiding in there. Everyone at the time thought she was like his damn hemorrhoid attached to him 24/7 when in fact he was responsible for that.

Imagine being so successful at that level that you could make a record with Bowie and forget all about it.
