I was in 9th grade. 14 yrs old. I heard the news from friends in school the next morning. An art teacher gathered us all in a lecture hall to view pictures of art on an overhead with backing music. The backing music was Beatles albums on reel to reel. But, as far as kids in mourning......not a one. We were too young. I heard the radio tributes later.....then, I was hooked. Been in mourning ever since.

I was a Lennon freak ever since Feb 9, 1964 I was so happy at that time because he came out of retirement and the new album. I had met him just before he left the public eye. I was reading an article about him in esquire mag that night , I didn't have the tv on, I went to bed around 11:30 and put the clock radio on, they were playing side two of Abbey Road. I was almost asleep when the dj said It's just been confirmed John Lennon is dead. I thought it was a sick joke..... I was wrong.

I will never forget this night, it was tbe demarcation between a better time and a personal and world decline. I stayed up all night, burned a candle, and cried as I never had. Just horrible, and unreal. John was one of a kind and never can be replaced.

Connie Colvin I was 11 and I still remember Howard Cosell making the announcement on MNF. I has only experienced death once before to that point, my grandfather. This was worse, and it got even worse as I got older and was able to understand loss. The world losing a great musician and voice of peace was bad enough. I feel more, though, for Yoko, Sean, and Julian.

🌈 Jah Bless 🌈 Yes, it was a demarcation point: the whole world, my personal life, and the rock music business seemed to go into a decline after that. Not long after, on January 2O 1981, I watched the Reagan inauguration. I had been a VERY active peace activist in the 1960s, and Reagan, then Governor of California, was one of the most prominent opponents of the anti-war movement, and as I glumy watched him become president, I felt I was watching the final funeral of all the Peace and Love ideals of the 60s movement. Since then the U S A certainly has declined into a sort of fascist police state, and worldwide the whole world is in a much darker place since John Lennon's Light was extinguished. At least that's how it seems to me...😅

I remember this night from 1980 very well. I was in 11th grade a few several shy of my 17th birthday. The next day was a sad day to be at school. Many of my friends were wearing a piece of black cloth or a John Lennon bottom somewhere on them.

Weird that I was a freshman in high school and was watching MNF alone but it had gone to commercial. So I flipped over to CNN and that's how I got the news. Immediately went back to MNF when Cosell let the world know. Didn't sleep the entire night. Other than family deaths and 9-11, the most miserable night of my life.

This is about my experience except I was watching local TV news and they broke the report from the teletype. I believe I then saw the Nightline report. I didn't know anything about the MNF report. I was up all night DXing NYC radio stations getting everything I could. I've still got the tapes, my own and others.

I remember so vividly that night. I pulled the covers over my head and cried all night. Here it is 2023. A different world, and it still hurts. Miss ya John. You were a beautiful man.

....one of the most horrible nights ever.....

I was sitting in my kitchen listening to a radio/tv id gotten last christmas. I said to a friend, "John got shot." And I thought to myself, 'He must have gotten shot in the arm or something.' I had the Let It Be poster on my bedroom wall, I woke the next morning and for a few mornings after that and just staired at the John photo. I also remember thinking, 'I didnt even know he lived in New York." The friend who I told that John had been shot was also shot and killed 2 weeks later.

The reporters gasps says it all.

I heard it in the morning, I was going to school & I also had a dentist"s appointment that day. That's all anybody talked about. Lord have mercy.

Yeah, the police were very careful about announcements of the shooter's name, age, where he was from, etc.... until Chief Sullivan's second press conference where he revealed everything right down to the guy's height, weight and street address! @.@

🌈 Jah Bless 🌈 In Nov. 1980 I was very depressed, I had been going thru a difficult time in my life. One particularly gloomy afternoon the phone rang and I answered it. It was one of John Lennon's "people" calling to tell me that John would be coming to LA (where I live) in January and he wanted me to go into the studio to make a record with him. I was so excited! For the first time in days I got and showered and sat down to practice guitar, like I used to do, like eight hours a day. But then, on the morning of Dec. 9 I woke up and went down stairs to make breakfast, and the TV was on, and the first words I heard was "John Lennon was shot and killed last night.._ I went into a state of shock and sat glued to the TV for next several days, in a complete state of shock. Needless to say I never did get to record with John, and it left me with a gaping emotional wound, which to this day, 43 years later, has never healed 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

i was 18 and on my way to school when i found out, My brother said that he was puzzled as to why there was so many John Lennon songs and Beatlle songs on the radio that morning

As I read the comments , and even now, ( December 12, 2022 , Manila time ), I got teary eyed reading the comments and watching those video on Lennon's murder.

He as older than John being about 58 or 59 years old. He had a injury to his own lung during a break in and ended up dying of lung cancer in 2001 November I think. It did not appear natural to me.

Here is the horrible way i learned about this...I actually had the monday night football game on.....but i had the volume down....i wewnt to sleep around midnight but woke up around 1 30 am and i put on my headphones...the beatles were on the radio magical mystery tour...it ended and on came in my life.....i checked Philadelphia s other rock station 94 wysp....they were playing revolution......it ended....on came i wanna hold your hand....i switched to wpst a new jersey station....they were playing the beatles too!!! i did a sweep of the dial.....beatles on every station.......I was SURE they had announced a reunion....i went back to wpst.....and heard what happened......man what a kick in the nuts.....i ran down the hall and told my older brother who was asleep...he burst into tears....we sat listening to beatles records all night and just cried...all damn night...curse the loser who shot him...still hate that dude..........

I was in my bedroom, listening to WPLJ while doing my homework and the DJ(i don't remember his name) says " omg , john lennon has been shot." I immediately ran upstairs entered the living where my parents were watching Monday night football, met my brother pete ,who heard the report while in his room, and we told my parents who wouldn't believe us. I couldn't sleep, went to school that morning, first thing at school there was a fire alarm and we had to go outside, in the rain, and EVERY ONE was discussing the lennon murder. I will never forget...

What a lovely tribute song...Pauls golden slumbers ..funny enough that was John favourite Paul McCartney song and mine too.

I remember that I heard about his death on the radio.

I'm inclined to agree with you. Few people remember that the killer was actually a nephew of Strom Thurmond. Fenton Bresler looks into this more in his book "Who Killed John Lennon," but much more research needs to be done. Have you seen the "Grounded Walrus" entries at xdell.blogspot.com ? I also agree,.............What the media didn't know at the time was that Mark David Chapman was a late 20-something year old nobody in the late 1970's who served as a volunteer at a refugee rescue organization called 'World Vision', founded in 1950, and he was a future mind-controlled patsy set up by a secret C.I.A.-funded assassins training camp that was established by the devout lifer in the C.I.A., George H.W. Bush, at World Vision's Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas facility. And it get's even better,..............care to know who was on the Board Of Directors for World Vision at that time? : John Warnock Hinkley, Sr.,.....father of the alleged Reagan assassin. The Bush's and Hinkley's were next-door neighbors in Houston. Mark Chapman and John Hinlkey, Jr. are the same age as each other. I couldn't possibly make this stuff up.

Its my understanding Chapman was aiming at someone else ( Yoko) , but being a bad shot and with it being dark missed his intended target and hit John Lennon instead.
