I just like the part where he's writing on camera. I love to see a writer writing.

"I see that ending and I write toward it; it's kind of waiting on me." -John Irving, on composing the last sentence of each novel first.

He also wrote it in a Q&A at the back of some editions of his books
Somewhere I recall George Will calling the urge to write “a metabolic need”.
Just learned of his dyslexia in his recent -all too short-memoir about his early life. I really love this guy. What a life lived thus far!
Loved the house. So warm and comforting to write in that space.

"My contribution to the environment" HAHAHAHAHAHA GOLD
Writing by hand is such an aesthetic, pleasing way to write a novel. Way more than working on a computer or even typewriter could be.
Please, someone give this man a Nobel Prize in Literature.

"A writer's office". I was finally able to see the landscape and scene of such a study in the United States and foreign countries. Thank you for uploading this video. Like you, I am a Japanese writer. Every day, I repeat the same routine activities on the slopes, but each day is definitely different from God. I'm still watching this video while writing one piece. I haven't decided on a title yet, but it will be when I finish writing it. The "Writer's Study" series uploaded by Japanese people is really rare. Japan is probably not suited for such artist activities. So I thank God that I met you here for the first time. Thank you very much for your continued support. Please continue this series. I sincerely apologize for the long post.
Would love more movies about writers such as John Irving and their lives.
His storys are so lovely weird and unreal, but I believe every single word he writes.
Real talk from a real writer.
Love the last scene. A writer in his element.
OMG that house! I'm in love 💘
The house that Garp built. Always nice to hear one of my favorite writers talk abut writing. Can't believe he writes them out in longhand! Blows my mind.......you'd think the carpal tunnel would have set in by now. Many more years to you, John! Thanks for all the humor and empathy in your fantastic work.

That house is on an island in lake huron. His wife's father won it in a poker game.

@Nautilus1972 that's annoying. It's presented like it's his house but it's his wife's house. He didn't go out and get it.

@@ellie-tk4jy What a strange comment. Why does it matter to you how a random couple you don't know came about their house or who it belongs to?
Hi John, If you see this, thanks for sharing your day with Time----gave me an emotional connection to my beloved brother, Jake. Hope you are well.
So refreshing to witness humility in this bombastic climate.
I'm going to try out starting at the end too.
This video is soo well made has a slow breezy feel love itt
I like you as a man and you have inspired me to write just like you do by hand.
I remember reading The Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving about thirty years ago and enjoyed it. It was funny, sad and very quiky like most of his books. I read The world according to Garp that was an odd book full of strange characters. He's definitely an original and great writer.
Never read anything by the man, but there's some...gravitas???...that John Irving has that makes me assume I'd be in awe of his work. I guess I need to someday find out.

Many of his novels have been made in to films
I really like his work. I've read everything by him except "Hotel New Hampshire" yet...I'm saving it for a day I really want to be uplifted.
Sounds like a very content man.
Thank you
Nicely done.
Great video. The music caught my attention.
Me: ''Can I have a John Irving.'' Mom: ''No we already have a John Irving at home.'' John Irving at home:
What is the background music at the beginning? sounds really relaxing :)
I love this.
i just want to have a conversation with this man
Pretty Informative & inspirational video!!! 🙏 💡 📌🥊🔥

I know it would be almost impossible, but I would love to see an At Home with J.M. Coetzee.
I too like to write by hand, but there are days arthritis keeps me from doing that,, but thats when I type what has been written, and finish what ever I am working on by typing. Then the next day write the remainder that I typed, this way I have a hard copy as well as an online back up copy.

I write by hand too. I have anxiety, and I feel writing by hand is more therapeutic that way for me.
Mr. Irving sold this house in 2016. He now lives in Toronto with his wife.
Interesting person
Does anyone know what it is he is fixing in the kitchen to eat? That kinda looked good!

What kind of pens does he write with? I’m very curious because I am a huge pen collector.

I believe it is a Pentel EnerGel Deluxe capped pen @1:21 or a variant of it. Quite often I use the Pentel RTX energel, which is retractable with a .5 mm needle tip (7mm also) and it writes beautifully at an affordable price. Good luck in your search James.
One author, if I could only meet one author. C. McCarthy? Too stiff. T. Wolfe? Too stuffy. John Irving? John Irving! Human, accessible, thoughtful yet not preachy. Oh, to have one day in Vermont, drinking Mountain Dew and looking at the Greens with Mr. Irving.

It's a family house. When you're in a couple you're not always going to precise whose money bought it or who inherited it. Imagine if a husband whose wife didn't have a job and raised their kids would repeat "it's my house".
