Lyrics:
Well, John Henry was a little baby
Sittin' on his dady's knee
He pick up a hammer and a little piece of steel,
And cried, "Hammer's gonna be the death of me, Lord, Lord
Hammer's gonna be the death of me"
Now the captain he said to John Henry,
"I'm gonna bring that steam drill around
I'm gonna bring that steam drill out on these tracks
I'm gonna knock that steel on down, God, God
I'm gonna knock that steel on down"
John Henry told his captain,
"Lord, man ain't nothin' but a man
But efore I let that steam drill beat me down
I'm gonna die with a hammer in my hand, Lord, Lord
I'll die with a hammer in my hand"
John Henry driving on the right side
That steam drill driving on the left
Says, "'Fore I'll let your steam drill beat me down
I'm gonna hammer myself to death, Lord, Lord,
I'll hammer my fool self to death"
Well, captain said to John Henry,
"What is that storm I hear?"
John Henry said, "That ain't no storm Captain
That's just my hammer in the air, Lord, Lord
That's just my hammer in the air"
John Henry said to his shaker
"Shaker, why don't you sing?
'Cause I'm swigin' thirty pounds from my hips on down
Yeah, listen to my cold steel ring, Lord, Lord
Listen to my cold steel ring"
John Henry, he hammered in the mountains
His hammer was striking fire
But he worked so hard; it broke his heart
John Henry laid down his hammer and died, Lord, Lord
John Henry laid down his hammer and died
Well, now John Henry, he had him a woman
By the name of Polly Ann
She walked out to those tracks
Picked up John Henry's hammer
Polly drove steel like a man, Lord, Lord
Polly drove that steel like a man
Well every, every Monday morning
When the blue bird he begin to sing
You could hear John Henry from a mile or more
You could hear John Henry's hammer ring, Lord, Lord
You can hear John Henry's hammer ring
I say, You can hear John Henry's hammer ring, Lord, Lord
You can hear John Henry's hammer ring

Everybody calls him Boss, but he is so humble, that he treats every member of every band that accompanies him as his boss, that's his greatness, long live The Boss

He’s a humble man. Hope he runs for political office one fine day. ❤️❤️👍
Love how they start this one up. Like everyone winding up a squeeze box, and then all of a sudden just an explosion of sound and this performance.
You truly had to be there. We were devastated, and Bruce brought us joy, and hope.
Grazie di esserci.
Few share a stage as eagerly and genuinely as Bruce. Clearly he loves it, as do the Breton Sound players!
what a performer, what a performance.
I was in New Orleans in 1977 underage but my dad knew a few ppl n got me n my sister in bars. This is how the bands play. Check out Mary don't you weep. One of the best crazy cities in the world love it.
Just gonna listen to this music all afternoon. Thank you

So much New Orleans musical influence!!! Love it!
Incredible performance, and one I was fortunate to experience in person at JF. These images and sounds are as vivid and as impactful as the day I experience them 13 years ago. What a day and weekend that was in NOLA!
I understand this was after Catrina... Im from Eastern Europa, i'm not from US but i know Streets of Philly and Born In USA.. And his voice is just mind blowing
Mr Springsteen, it's a pleasure to hear you sing, a big hug.👍🇦🇷
Showwwwww!!!!!!

The banjo player! I must root out my sessions DVD to see if he is in that time at Bruce’s place, lol. Thank you for sharing your music. I’ve never seen anyone else wear a guitar like Bruce. Reminds me of a gun slinger.

This is one of the most amazing shows I have ever listened to (bootleg version). I love this great video production, but it is missing the best part - of the audience recorded bootleg version. At first, you could hear the audience being very chatty and skeptical, but that gradually changes and by the time "My City of Ruins" arrives, they are totally in Bruce's palm. Thank you, Bruce, for sharing this with us!

Това е музика! Брус се раздава като за последно, като никой друг!
Cada uma melhor que a outra.
He is not called the "BOSS" for nothing, and this delivery of the Seger sessions tune is a save for the millennium for sure. Next up is "Climbing Jacobs Ladder", another fabulous work by the group!!!!!!!!
Viva el folk......
