Drafted by the #bostonceltics from Ohio State in 1962, John Havlicek became arguably the most popular Celtics to date. On this April afternoon in 1978, Hondo would say goodnight to the fans at Boston Garden for the very last time.
Fans forget just how massive a loss to the struggling national basketball association John Havlicek retiring was. Remember, this is 1978. The NBA is being labeled the “black league,” riddled with drugs, fights, empty arenas and slouching ratings. The Association couldn’t afford to lose such a fixture since 1962, a fan favorite who played basketball the way it was meant to be played… the #Celtics way.
Not before long, however, a Bird from French Lick would fly into town, change the #NBA forever and keep the Celtics Mystique alive.
