Great voice and I love the constant, unpredictable meter changes. They don't make musicians like this anymore.

A great song and a great musician. Holcomb was such a strange yet bright person. I love his voice and the way he played the banjo. Great

Just curious what parts about his personality caught you as being strange? Was it his verbal communication on his Pete Seeger Rainbow connection episode that allowed you to come to that conclusion? Just wondering

@mandolinman2006 Hi, two years on - its a Harmony Sovereign H1260 circa 1960 made in Chicago. Solid one piece back, book matched Spruce top and ladder braced internals, finished in shellac (French Polish) Jumbo size and famous for its deep tone.

Damn I had no idea Roscoe was such a good guitarist. Always thought of him first and foremost as a banjo picker.

John Hardy was a desperate little man He carried two guns every day He shot a man on the West Virginia line And you ought to see John Hardy getting away John Hardy got to the east stone bridge He thought that he would be free And up stepped a man and took him by the arm Saying Johnny, walk along with me He sent for his poppy and his mommy too To come and go his bail But money won't go on a murdering case And they locked John Hardy back in jail John Hardy had a pretty little girl The dress that she wore was blue As she came skipping through the old jail hall Saying Poppy, I been true to you John Hardy had another little girl The dress that she wore was red She followed John Hardy to his hanging ground Saying Poppy, I would rather be dead "I've been to the east and I've been to the west I've been this wide world around I've been to the river and I've been baptized And it's now I'm on my hanging ground" John Hardy walked out on his scaffold high With his loving little wife by his side And the last words she heard poor John-O say "I'll meet you in that sweet bye and bye"

That is what was formerly known as a fast thumb-brush strum. A real nail grinder on a steel string acoustic but he don't seemed to mind much.

I always thought Ralph Stanley's voice captured the essence of all that had came and gone in the mountians of the south but after listening to Roscoe, I'd say Ralph has an equal.

Every time I hear this song I think of Leadbelly. This man in the video did the song well but I like Leadbelly's versions better. First time I heard this song was his accordion 🪗 version.

That's an amazing video. Does anybody know what brand of guitar is? It looks and sounds great. It doesn't look like a Gibson or Martin.
