When he went solo and broke up with Creedence Clearwater Revival his old record label sued him for sounding like CCR on his solo release album. He won the case. The judge told the label that you can't sue a man for sounding like himself. LoL

Oh man, that is hilarious. If that were a thing, AC/DC could launch a class action suit against themselves. Hahaha
The old man is a metaphor for an unavoidable problem. It can mean any number of problems.
For those who are unaware, John plays all the instruments on this album!
Sometimes a song is just a song. Relax, Brad.
This song is a metaphor of how he was treated by music executives over the years, especially after CCR broke up.
The song was on his #1 album Centerfield. Fogerty self-produced the album Centerfield for only $35k. He wrote the songs, sang them and played all the instruments as well

When you lived way out in the country…there always seems to be that old man and an old, rundown shack, with a well for fresh water, and traps or crab lines on the river near the beach. At age eleven he was a bit scary, at age fifty it was hard knowing the crusty old man lived and slept in there. The shack was still there, but now had been hauled across the street and was used for storage. And today?
John Fogerty is his own genre 😎

Well said my friend 👊
Thx! Old age is (hopefully) inevitable. With it and with death comes a fear. We try to hide from it but it’s always in the back of our minds, haunting us!
This is the guy who made a song called "Keep on Chooglin'". He definitely can write lyrics just for the sound.
He is just a scary old man that lives down the road. Every neighborhood had some one the kids were afraid to be outside of their house.
Fogerty is one of the best song writers ever.

One of the best singers too, in my opinion. I've never seen a reaction video where people didn't marvel at just how great his voice is. One of a kind, indeed.
its a metaphor for a record company. the record company is the old man down the road and its how he hated them.

Brad & Lex, you’ll love his "Rock and Roll Girls" and "Almost Saturday Night"!!!
He actually also had 2 solo albums in the 70s before this great comeback solo release in the mid 80s .. A rock and roll legend. Sure you will get to more eventually. Always a great take on things. Love your channel..
the old man is a metaphor for misfortune, or bad times
I believe John Fogerty played all the instruments on this album. Including the drums.
I don’t give a damn if he’s from California, he sounds like he’s from the Louisiana Bayou. And I love it!🐸🦗🐊
John Fogerty actually got SUED over this song claiming that he plagiarized HIMSELF. It was such a ridiculous court case

I always thought the Old Man was what you end up as. We all end up Old (hopefully). All the people, the stages of life.
Saw him live a few years back in Walker, MN, and had a chance to again this year, but couldn't make it work. He still sounds phenomenal. It was like 90 and humid and he's up there in his flannel and handkerchief playing his ass off...🙌🙌

@@charliejaworski2562 I got to see CCR twice in the 70s! I'm a lucky soul!
1st...I have no life...I am the Old Man down the Road...Spot on reaction...a hui hou
You're missing a great deal of double entendre from that era of chronic turbulence.
Depending on how I'm feeling, the old man down the road is either the "devil" or time. I was always glad he kept the Fender theme (amp, cable, Strat) throughout.
I was a teenager kid back in the late 80s from New Zealand heard John Fogarty fell in love with bluegrass American Country rock
He was 40 when this was released.... I think it is about him and him alone, that was him at the beginning uncovering the amplifier, standing near the lovers on a picnic, on the road near the the cheerleader on the phone, etc. I think the extension cord symbolizes time and experiences. Don't let age fool you, don't assume I am not relevant, don't leave me alone with your wife or daughter...lol.
This song has always floated my boat. Ccr and john fogerty. Can't ever go wrong.

This is my jam... I heard this song not so long ago. I was in Guatemala in a small town. They were having a rodeo in the town and this song came on and it stuck with me ever since. Just reminds me of a simple life.
Longest extension cord ever!😂🤣❤️✌️

that is one LONG guitar cord! 😆
I saw him in concert a few years ago. His tour was called 1969 the year that CCR put out 3 albums. He is a true legend! Glad you listened to this song. You need to listen to Centerfield.
The old man = the Devil or just also a general representation of the unknowable calamity right around the corner. It's a song Brad and song lyrics quite often speak in metaphor, allegory, and riddles :-)
That was a grave digger, Brad. Great song though. I think the song is about the long and winding road of life, and that near the end, the old man is waiting, whether that means your old self, or God on Judgment Day. Thanks, cats.
It doesn't matter if it's swamp music or not. It's just his sound - and it's good the way it is - just like CCR. My favorite from him is the vinyl record "blue moon swamp". My favorite song is "a hundred and a ten in the shade" and "joy of my life"! A song for his great love... Best wishes @all from Hamburg (Germany)

WHAT ABOUT ROCK & ROLL GIRLS, SODA POP, I SAW IT ON TV, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE RAIN is mine.
Put these next in your John Fogerty queue: "Change In The Weather", "A Hundred and Ten in the Shade" and "Bring It Down to Jelly Roll".
I got the impression that Fogerty is doing some more Cajun myth stuff here. In stories I've read this kind of character might be a "conjure man," sort of like a bayou sorcerer that you don't want to mess with because he's got powers.....and there's no way anybody can up to him and nobody knows what he's there for or what he will do next. You'd best just hide or run away because "He got the voice that speak in riddles, he got the eye as black as coal"....and "He shake the thunder from the mountains, he shake the lightnin' from the sky. He bring a strong man to his beggin' knees, he make a young girl's mama cry....."
With all the effects the 'Old Man's has on his surroundings, one could reason that the 'Old Man' is none other than DEATH...
Brad is too funny! "Who is the old man?" "Where is the old man?" "What does he look like?"
YOU CAN ALWAYS TELL LEX LOVES HER SOME CCR BRAD, SHE ALWAYS SMILES WHEN CREEDENCE IS PLAYING AND OF COURSE THOSE VOCALS OF ( JOHN FOGERTY ) 😊
The only man that could impersonate John Fogerty is John Fogerty. One of the best ever.
....'The Old Man' is a symbol for the Devil, it's a scary shadowy figure that Fogarty is describing, not a straying husband.....

Swamp rock at its best!
Like many, I'm a huge Fogerty fan. I have all the records, go to all the shows, know all the words, learned to play them all and play them in my band. But if I was ever asked what my favorite Fogerty line is, I might very well choose the line from this one - "He make the river call your lover." So full of dark and unknowable foreboding, without even knowing what he's talking about. Brilliant. I've often wondered if his inspiration for that line is the old hit song by Pat Boone called Moody River, which is a song Fogerty covered on his Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again album. In that song the singer is heartbroken because his lover commits suicide in the Moody River. He blames the river for taking his baby's life, which sounds very much like it might be something that happens after 'he make(s) the river call your lover'. Deep and gloomy lines that could have been referring to the same incident in two different songs. Moody River was a huge hit which has been covered by many artists including Johnny Rivers, Johnny Burnette and Frank Sinatra. It might be worth reacting to - either the Pat Boone or Blue Ridge Rangers version.
The old man is into voodoo. I've always liked this song, since it dropped
I believe this is the song his brother and former band mates sued him, and prevented him from playing. They said it sounded too much like CCR. Well, in court, he played it for the jury, and he said, of course it does, because "I am CCR". He won the law suit.
The old man down the road = the future that must eventually be faced...
The lyrics were very coherent. The video had nothing to do with the meaning of the song. He wasn't with a woman. He's a wizard. "He takes the thunder from the mountain. He takes the lightning from the sky" is not about somebody's dad or boyfriend.
This song introduced me to John Fogerty and through him, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Prior to that I had heard of them through cover songs but had not heard their music.
The old man down the road is a metaphor for Death wich is down life´s road
The old man is, like, the evil troll, what brings fear in one’s life, it’s a metaphor
As a WV resident for the last 48 years, it could very likely be just some old guy who lives down the road who sings while out working his property, "Hi-dee, hi-dee, hi-dee, ho" Something like Cab Caloway might have sung. Probably should've done lyrics with Fogerty's drawl, here.
It's a bout the devil... And a deal. "It tells the story about a man standing in your way with a suitcase covered in rattlesnake hide, eyes as black as coal," Fogerty said. In his case, this demon is the record company.
Definitely a cool sound. And swampy.
You guys don't usually go down a rabbit hole, but this is a good one. 😎
John had a fascination with the Louisiana Bayou . Although he was from the California Bay area .
I always took it just to mean the old man was more of a mythical person. Definitely dangerous. Like a story of local legend of a recluse. Maybe it’s just me.
I was waiting for you to say whether you liked the song.Thats more important than analysing every word.
Wow, finally got here first lol. Love your channel, keep up the great work!
The Old Man is a mythical, legendary representation of resilience. Discuss. ;-)
Swamp Blues Folk Rock .... and I love it!
You two should check out 110 in the Shade. It is another great Fogerty solo song.
Lex I was thrilled to hear from you. I love coming here. This is my only media. You tube is it for me.
The old man down the road is the guy practicing HOO DOO or VOO DOO so you better Hidey-Hide!
As others have mentioned, "The Old Man Down the Road" was involved in a famous court case. John Fogerty had lost the rights to Credence Clearwater's songs to Saul Zaentz, the owner of the record company that first signed CCR. Zaentz sued Fogerty claiming that "The Old Man Down the Road" was a plagiarization of CCR's "Run Through the Jungle." Zaentz ultimately lost the case, but parts of it went all the way to the US Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled that Zaentz was liable for Fogerty's legal costs, so Fogerty did not lose any money over the legal action.
After ccr, fogerty had: The Blue Ridge Rangers (jambalaya). I collect 45's and I didn't know what I had untill an older dude told me it was fogerty. keep up the good work guys...
Love the reaction guys!

John Fogerty: Hall of Fame Centerfielder
It amazes me how they take lyrics and especially the videos so literal!
You do know John Fogerty is the guy from CCR, right?
Check out John Fogerty’s “Hot Rod Heart”. There are a lot of great songs in his solo catalog.
fun song.
When this was recorded Regan was President and was pretty old. Many thought he was talking about President Regan.
I also think "The Old Man Down the Road" was himself, looking at the video, how he is standing in the road at the end, and he probably does own a "suitcase covered in rattle snake hide". I think the song might just be descriptive of himself. maybe?
Great song!
yes,Sounds of the swamps!
Here is another couple of his songs you should give a listen to ( Hot Rod Heart ) and ( Rambunctious Boy )
Brad - I'm with you - i don't like the sound of crickets either. Great reaction - thanks for posting this one.
I have noticed that Lex used to laught a lot. Now she smiles a lot. Something happened, Something good.
Would like to get your reactions to "Before the Apes Came," by the metal band Cadaveria or, perhaps, the music video "Anoana," by Heilung.
There was an industrial/office building a little bit south of Palomar airport that put their parking lot downhill by a creek full of bulrushes and I loved going there at night just to listen to the frogs.🐸 I like crickets, too.🦗 Part of Earth's symphony.🌎🎶
John Fogerty is my hero. One of the few people (although I can't think of anyone else) who was sued for plagiarizing himself.
I agree with Lex
the old man knows all
"I don't know what was going on, but I know somebody was cheating!" Surprise there. 😆
Always interpreted these lyrics to mean the guy is not yet an old man so u have to treat him nice (hi'd hi) because he could hurt you... until someday when he's an "old man down the road."
Home Free - Man of constant sorrow for some good 'ol swamp music
With Fogerty and CCR, you don't even need to hear his voice. His guitar tone and sound is a giveaway without singing a word. Swampy sound that I enjoy. Always enjoyed Fogerty and CCR as a kid. The only California guy that I know of who sounds like he would be a perfect fit in the south.
crawdad boil!!

The old man down the road is Saul Zaentz.
