I was teaching a 9th grade class and asked one of my students to share a song he loves so we can play it as we work. He was embarrassed because he thought nobody would like it. He chose this. The class never heard it before. By the end they were all singing together, just a beautiful record to unite the people. At the end of class he thanked me and I said no THANK YOU. Today you were the teacher. In the Bronx we don't hear a lot of country music but at that moment that student exposed his classmates to a whole new world.

My Mother's family is from West Virginia. And this song makes me tear up every time I hear it. Such great memories. That side of my family. Always welcoming. Always warm. And always food and laughter. Canasta games until 4AM. Fishing down at the creek with my Uncle. Growing up in the 70s there was a gift indeed.

Italian here, "forced" by necessities to live outside his region and missing his hometown nearly everyday. This song is a masterpiece and has nothing to do only with West Virginia itself, it's a state of mind. It manages to capture the essence of nostalgia and it makes you feel less alone in the world. Mr. Denver was really a poet.

I was not born in America, grew up in a city. I was not even born when this song came out. Yet, my eyes get watery everytime I listen to this song.

My grandad used to play this in the car all the time as a little girl,wherever we went.On holiday,fish and chips by the coast and only a short drive away,but everytime i wanted to listen to this man.Along with many amazing songs of his,they were all played on my grandads radio,what a nostalgic feeling.

I think we all go somewhere when we hear this song and reminisce about better times and places

Honestly I miss music like this now days. It holds a huge part in my childhood and heart from my mom. I remember her being sad after he passed away from his plane crash. I hear ya. Miss pops. He grew up in Huntington WV with 7 siblings. It's been 12 years and I still think about him often. We went from hard times and not talking much when I was young to best friends for the last 10 years. Wish we'd had 10 more but he missed some bad things in life that happened including Covid and I guess that's just how things work out. Hope you can get home at least for a while.
