For the jobs I did on a rice farm is southeast Arkansas, the 4320 was the best tractor ever. It had good horse power, ride, and agility. A great all around tractor.

Brings back so many memories. High school (Riverina/MIA in New South Wales Australia - I’m now 70) holidays. Loved the 3020 power shift. I got stuck with an IH-A514 row crop - corn, sorghum, cotton. Lusted after the 3020 and 4010. Did get to use the 3020 on a field bin harvesting the corn. The IH had the single row cotton picker on the back during cotton picking time otherwise it was a general purpose grader, plower etc. Two hours from one end of the cotton row to the other - mind numbing!

I was always a fan of John Deere. I operated a 2510 with synchro shift, and a couple of 4020s, one with power shift, the other with synchro shift, a 4430 with quad range, and a 4440 with quad range. The 4020 with the power shift with 8 forward speeds made fieldwork and other tasks easier to manage when on the go. The 4430 and 4440 with the soundguard cab prevented the operator from becoming weary of the elements (weather and excessive noise) after long hours of operation. This was a welcome relief although there are days when operating a John Deere without a cab felt really good. When you compare it to other brands, John Deere's power steering was in a league of its own from 1960 on up. The 6030 model is my favorite to this day, even though I have not experienced operating this model. The factory specs of the 6030 are a bit misleading as it was listed with 175hp. Dyno tests had it closer to 225hp or better. I suspect John Deere had their reasons for not advertising the real horsepower of this model. The 6030 was in a class of its own during its era when other brands tried to compete by opting for V-8s like IH, Massey Furgeson, and Oliver. Their hp never came close to the 6030.

I think the price difference is that the 7520 was phased out in 1975 and the 6030 made it to 1977. Most often price books give the last year of production price. In modern times a 620 hp 9620RX was $218,000 in 2016 a 410 hp 8RX 410 tractor in 2020 was $628,000.

My grandfather had two 64 4020 powershifts, a 1969 4020 synchro side console, and a 71 4320. Of all of them I liked the 4020 power shift the best. It worked the best on the livestock farm, and worked well doing many tasks. The 4320 would have been better with a power shift, the 4320 did many chores as well, a little big in the sheds and lots, always seemed to make it work though. Since John Deere Chose to use the engine block as a stressed member of the front frame, most of them had engine problems. Too much force=too much flex. Don't feel bad, JD refused to address the issue until way out in the 60 series 4WD leaving tens of thousands of owners with short life spans. They should have been ashamed of themselves but were too busy installing engines.

What sucks is with the prices of new tractors and what seams like the big farmers being able to collect more tractors us younger farmers are struggling to get some old iron at a reasonable price. I grew up using my dads 4230. Now people are asking 20 30 grand for one. I really don’t prefer other colors but in order to get an affordable 100 plus hp I might have to look at white or case tractors. I’m embarrassed to say I even looked at a manahindra 😹

It is interesting allot of tractors that are 50-40 years old bring more than they were new. If you want good horse power at a decent price check out the Allis-Chalmers 8000 series. Biggest cab in the industry in the 80’s, power shift and fwa or 2wd options. They are well built and often $10-$12 less. I open think when I see a 125 hp 4430 for $30K in tractor house why pay that when you could get a 170 hp AC fwa 8070 for $17K on the same page.

The prices are often from the last year of production. The 6030 ran through 1977 and the 7520 ended in 1975. You can see there is a price jump from the 4520 to the 4620 in one year. In recent times the 9620RX was $618,000 when it debuted in 2016. The 8RX 410 when it was fully released in 2020 was $628,000. It is interesting to track prices on farm machines.

I would assume that the 3020 on that 9501 combine was turned up a bit to run that machine. Probably some weights add so not to get pushed around to much

Normally they run the 9501 on a 6030. The 9501 sales brochure rates the minimum pto hp for the combine at 120 hp. Yes the 3020 is cranking out a little extra.

It’s hard to beat a 4440. One of the all time greats. I will do a SoundGard plowing, planting and harvesting video in the future.

What is a Wheatland 4020? I enjoy watching all Green Machines in action.

The Wheatland has rounded fenders and platform guards to keep dust of the operator. It also has a fixed front axle vs. an adjustable axle on the row crop model.

I don't understand how the original price of the 7520 was less than the 6030 that was manufactured during the same time period? It would seem the articulate would have more cost because it has more moving parts.

The prices often come from the last year of production. The 6030 was built two years past the 7520.

So what is the deal with the 4520 and 4620? Same years of production? My Dad bought 4520 in 1969. Later he told me the deal neglected to tell him for a very reasonable fee he could have had a 4620 engine put in it. Since we still have it on the farm, I am still curious about that story from long ago. To me it does not make sense to have sold them at the same time.

They were not produced the same years. The 4520 was from 69 to 70 The 4620 was 71 to 72. They both had the same engine. 404 cubic inch with a factory installed turbo.
