John Deere Model E130 Riding Mower - Setup, Test, Review
Ғылым және технология
Having just picked up a new Model E130 Riding Mower, I thought I'd go through the unit in detail and evaluate the operation. I'm used to the older clutch / multi gear setup and not automatic / hydro-static transmissions so this will be new. This currently cost around $2000 at the time of this video, boasting a 22hp vtwin motor. I wasn't overly excited about the 30 second oil change system, seems like a gimmick and not as effective as the conventional filter system.
Ill say now that the tyre pressure and the deck calibration will not be set correctly, I have a separate video for checking and adjusting this!!

The Forward and reverse pedals took a little getting used to. Also releasing quickly from those pedals acts like a brake. One annoyance is the reverse button, I hadn't seen this before, requiring to be pressed when going in reverse with engaged blades. Also the transportation disengagement mechanism should be engaged in the rear of the unit once delivered... mine wasn't.
2 Gallons fills the tank.
We started the Yard at 4in, down to 3 3/4 and onto 3 1/2. The cut was nice and operation was pleasant. Afterwards we tried out the hose connection for cleaning, but honestly it was too new to accumulate anything to show any significant grass removal.

Just a note to say "thanks"! I've had the E130 for four years and you showed me two things I never knew about before. The only thing I don't like about the tractor is the ridiculous price Deere charges for the EZ oil change refills. Also, if anyone knows of any third-party accessory manufacturers for Deere tractor, perhaps you can comment. The E130 has a tiny "glove compartment" which is nothing more than a glorified pencil box. I do have a wagon attachment I can pull behind the tractor but I'd like a small but practically-sized basket (or something similar) into which I can put a few tools or other items to carry to different parts of the yard.
Great review. My S130 was delivered yesterday and I love it. Comfortable and powerful. Biggest difference I can see is electric PTO switch, rather than the lever. And the fuel gauge is digital. The deck-rinse works better if the deck is all the way down.

Just go my new S130 yesterday. I much prefer the PTO switch and the digital fuel gauge. Great mower.
Im getting the s130 soon so this will help. I did notice that when you have it plugged in with the hose you didn’t have the blades all the way down Close to the ground. I was watching someone from John Deere said it helped to have it close to the ground with the water running and it cleans it better . Other than that thank you very much

Think I might get this model after a little researching. Finding out about the quick oil ridiculous thing, that can be changed easily helps. Ready for a quieter, more relaxing tractor Tamil rather than my old 70s Cub Cadet which is awesome and a beast. But need something a little more comfortable now and this looks like it fits the ticket
Thank you good review we are getting one this weekend!

A leaf blower cleans off the top of the cutting deck nicely, too. Useful review, but by them time I'd buy a new rider mower there'd be backup lights and reverse warning beepers on them.

I can only imagine how many more safety features they will add to protect people from themselves in the coming years.
Excellent advice on ethanol free gas. In the long term, small engines just don't seem to like ethanol. I still treat my 100% gas with Stabil Marine for added protection.

It’s imperative that you lower the deck all the way to the ground while blades turning full speed in order to clean it using the hose connector. The suction created underneath forces grass etc out, cleaning it properly, this takes a good 5 minutes.

Good review. I plan on purchasing one the last week in March. Do you know if they have a "smaller" part to replace that big bulky black rubber/plastic that discharges the grass to the side? (I have to drive thru a gate/archway and the clearance for the at huge protruding piece might be an issue). Thanks.

So, I used to have that issue. I cut a small hole at the end of the plastic and tied a para-rope to it and the other side to the mower my the console. Pulling on the rope pulls up the plastic as its on a hinge with a spring to clear those areas.
Great reciew

Quick change oil filter from Lowe’s and said you’re going to need 2 quarts as well. I did a conversion. So I don’t spend $50 I spend $15.

What a waste that filter system is....
Hello, just bought mine from lowes this last weekend. Had to return it and do an exchange because first one had dead battery, loose gas tank and seat sensor was hanging and not attached. I couldn’t go back to do the exchange because of work and store is almost 2 hours away, but got the second one and the battery was dead again and gas tank was also loose. Is that normal? Any of Those? Also I rode it for the first time today and when I engage the blades it really feels like I’m doing something wrong, like I should be pushing a clutch in or something. I was just typing while you went over that so I’ll look to see how smooth your was. Thanks for your help

Very strange. In order to maintain the Warranty, the people from the local John Deere dealership come down to our Lowe's, do the uncrate, build and test. I cant imagine if after all of that you received one in that quality unless it was a return.

@@retrotechandelectronics I don’t know because the second one I got had the same loose gas tank and also a dead battery. It sucks because I live so far away from lowes almost 2 hours away. My mom said she shook some other gas tanks too on some smaller Deere’s and they were the same so she got it and it was the last one in the state. Well at lowes and Home Depot, there’s actually a John Deere dealer about 30 minutes away from but I got the tractor on credit and I believe it’s easier to go through lowes then the dealer.

I don't like seeing him quickly jam the blades in gear running at full speed. On my one year old E130, I prefer to slowly engage the pto at idle. I think jamming it in at high speed is going to damage something eventually.

good practice not to wash the deck,,,, these decks are cheaply powdercoated and it won't be long before the coating lifts if you keep washing it. Also the bearings in your spindles will crap out prematurely as well. Just blow the deck off with a compressor air gun or use an 18v blower.
You did not mention the need (every second time one uses the unit) to grease the barrings. I did not know...used it like the one before...and now got a CAD $ 820.00 bill after two years or 20.6 hours of use. (This includes transport, sharpening the blade, fixing a flat tire, and the barrings...plus 15% tax) I paid CAD $ 3000.00 new. For me, this is a piece of expensive shit. All plastic and the major thing here seems the brand name, one is paying for! Never again!

@@retrotechandelectronics Single use on our property means 1.2 hours. The manual says to grease every 8 hours and/or every 25 hours. The old one was/is 33 years old, made in the US, and is metal, not plastic. Besides a starter issue, never a repair and never needed to be greased. (If it is now necessary to grease, I wonder why the salesperson does not offer to purchase a grease gun with the unit. They tried to talk us into adding all kinds of expensive extras like attachments etc. etc.) The internet is full of complaints about the E-100 series. Unfortunately, I did not research these beforehand, since I trusted the good name of JD. Never again!
