John Deere GT245 Hard to Start, Weak or No Spark, Kawasaki Engine

How i went about finding out why my mower was hard to start at times. This mower has the Kawasaki 20 hp engine on it. When it would not start, it would pop back through the carb while turning over.

My mower has been acting just like you described low and behold it was the ignition switch. Thank you for taking the time to post this video it saved me a ton of time!

21 hp Kawasaki 350 hours on a zero turn doing the same. The first problem was it would not start after it was warmed up then it was occasionally hard to start cold. Small engine place not much help after paying 75$ I called snapper and was basically told to start replacing the electronics till it was fixed. You made the most sense of anything I have heard so far👍 thanks

I changed the plugs and it helped a little. I assumed when it was in the shop that was done. It was not I did run out of fuel after an hour so I swap tanks pulled the air filter and it started. I then reinstall air filter and finish my 4acres

that is a very common problem with ALL circuit boards. Dust/dirt settles on the board and then moisture is absorbed and you have a low resistance path to ground, shorting out the coils as if the ignition switch where in the off position. You did the right thing by cleaning the circuit board and that is why everything works now. That is why the manufacturer uses Conformal coating on circuit boards... a tough plastic waterproof layer that helps keep moisture off the board

You also spoke of initially was a weak spark, addressing that I would emery cloth the flywheel and coil ends first thing just to start at a cleaned off position. And this is why I was watching your video, my 2006 Wright Sentar 23hp Kaw, extremely hard starting cold and almost impossible to restart hot. So I will clean up what I suggested to you and ckeck ignition switch. And pull shut off wires off coils and see how it acts. I havent checked fuel pump either that will be among the other tests. Thanks

Hey! My weak spark was because the dirty circuit board was partially grounding out the ignition coils. Once I cleaned that up it has been running great ever since. If you have a good strong spark I would look at the carb and fuel delivery. On some small engines I have also seen valve clearance cause issues similar, but that’s a long shot. Good luck!

Basically there is a relay on that board that shorts the coils to ground when you turn off the key switch or trigger a safety. Disconnect the small wires from both coils and if it starts and runs good then the issue is not fuel or spark. The board may need cleaning or replacing. Be careful and don’t run too long with covers off.

Yea, it was the buildup of moist dirt and grass blown onto the circuit board under the dash. It was shorting the ignition coils making the spark weak. After cleaning the board with alcohol and tooth brush, thoroughly drying out, it has run fine ever since. Hope this helps!

@@jimcooke640 Have you ever done anything with the carb float? My mechanic is thinking that my float is not stopping where it should and allows fuel to keep flowing in. It has a new float and needle, but there is no way to adjust the float level. This is on a GT245. I have read that with newer fuels, the content of ethanol can cause the float to sit at the wrong level. My mechanic thinks that if we can melt the hinge area of the float, we may be able to change the float angle and level. Is this something you have come across and if so, what did you do about it?

@@sambaaxe no, i rebuilt the carb, but that wasnt the issue. I didnt replace the float because it seemed ok. (No fuel inside of it). My issue was weak spark. What problem are u having?

@@jimcooke640 seems to be running rich. Couls were going so replaced them but still have ploblems. Got new float abd and needle but extra fuel accumulates as does not seem float is stopping flow properly...but could be wrong. Plugs foul in 5 mins and excess fuel gets into oil. We were thinking that maybe the float was not going to correct position and there is no adjustment possible. I have read that fuel with ethanol causes different float positions due to change in specific gravity. Another possibility is that we are not getting enough air or venting issues. Totally confused at this point.

@@sambaaxe not sure how much you are depending on your mechanic, but here's my thoughts. Try pinching off the fuel line and regulate the fuel by hand. Just give it enough to run. See if it still floods and fouls the plugs. It does seem that maybe you are looking in the right direction. Now for the float, I would remove the carb and the float bowl and attach a clean piece of hose to the fuel inlet. Hold the carb in it's normal orientation and gently blow air in the tube with your mouth. While still blowing, gently lift the float to check that at some point the needle valve shuts off the flow of air. Work it up and down a few times to make sure it's repeatable and there is no mechanical bind with the float. I have never had to modify the plastic type floats. If it is not damaged or has fuel inside of it, it's probably ok. There could be some thing wrong with the needle valve or the way it's sealing. It shouldn't take much Force to shut off the flow to where you can't blow through the hose by mouth. Hope this helps...

I don’t think I mentioned in the video that I checked valve lash. My problem was exactly as described. I had weak spark due to moisture and dirt in that circuit board under the dash. Been running fine ever since cleaning and drying out.

Some people do go overboard with annoying music but this was simply a radio playing in the background. Hope you got some benefit from the video.
