Those things produce some of the most beautiful music, especially when they're tuned good to run at a very slow idle or when they're under a heavy load. When I was around 12 or 13 years old my father and I had our D John Deere on the dyno late one night pulling it down to see how much we could get out of it. She went from pulling down under a heavy load to running free in a split second. We ended up twisting the pto shift off of it. My father remembered he had been at an auction quite a few years prior to that where they had a brand new pto unit in the original wooden crate for D that he bought for next to nothing. We went out in the shed and dug it out and it turned out to be the right one for that tractor. If I remember correctly it was only 4 bolts holding the whole thing. In a short time we had it back together and run the same night. My grandfather had originally bought it then it was handed down to my father. Since I'm in a wheelchair I can't do anything with something like that so when my father past away it went to my oldest brother. Unfortunately he was never in to that stuff like I was and since he's had it they fired it up and moved it up into the back part of the shop and parked it. He moved out of state now so I have no idea what will become of the tractor now. I used to mess with it all the time when I was real young. When I was like 10 or 11 years old I wasn't big enough to start it without getting up on the flywheel so I messed with it until I got it where I could turn it backwards until it fired at which point it would backfire and spin it forward and start for me. I was just a little bitty guy when I was younger.

@@butternuthillfarm1599 we used to have a local two cylinder club when I was a kid 30 years ago but I haven’t seen or heard of any in many years. We’ve got a brand new piston and cylinders that still has the paint in the spark plug holes for that D. When I was around 8 or 9 years old we bought a W John Deere out of Missouri which is the D as a stationary engine. They told us when we got there that they had new piston and cylinders somewhere for it but they couldn’t find them. After we got home my father got to looking at it and realized the cylinders were a different shade green so he got to looking in the spark plug holes and discovered they had already put the new cylinders on the engine. Years later he sold the engine but kept the rods , pistons and cylinders for our D but he never got it put on the tractor.

Actually, the model G was the third most powerful of the letter series with slightly less horsepower at both the belt and drawbar than the drawbar than the model D. The model D was discontinued at about the same time as the G, incidentally, though it had been in production since 1923.

I agree with you, and I also have a model D. What I should have said is the G was the most powerful of the row crop letter series. The D is not a row crop tractor, it is a standard tractor not meant for row crops. Thanks for watching and commenting, and good catch, also the R was also a standard tractor and not a row crop series.

412 cubic inches. Same engine in the all fuel 70. 376 gas or diesel otherwise in the 70. Back in the 50s, a Power block and Heisler head plus a Johnson or Heisler intake with a bigger Marvel Schibler carburetor made a G a firmidable monster with nearly 70 hp on good grade gasoline. The G had loads of torque but a G equipped as above pulled a 4-14 trailer plow without hesitation about anywhere but Gumbo. But man was it THIRSTY.

Sweet Man !! Sweet... I've always loved the old John Deere sound.... Dad had an old B ,,,, 41 or 42 ... Hand start 😊 Petcocks would spit fuel on you at times .....Nice barn by the way,, what is the footprint of that building... New subscriber today.👍

The barn is 62x72. The G's are probably my favorite 2 cylinder John Deere's. They have a sound all too their own and a favorite of the John Deere tractor pullers. I've also experienced my share of petcock spitting! Thanks for watching, commenting, and subscribing.

Electronic ignition is the way to go. Its not that the points didn't work. I just think the quality of materials use in new replacement points is crap. Same with new voltage regulators.
