John Deere 425 Snowblowing & Cold Start

Starting up and snowblowing with the John Deere 425 Garden Tractor and the 46" single stage snowblower. Filmed with a combination of iPhone and a toque mounted GoPro. This video's been a long time coming thanks to the editing difficulties experienced while trying to cut together GoPro footage with movie maker. Business school hasn't helped either.

There is a trick to starting these tractors cold... it's in a service note from JD. Crank the engine for 5 seconds, then stop, turn off the key. Count to 15, then crank it for 5 more seconds. Repeat until it starts. Mine will start almost every time right away on the second try. I've never had to go more than 3 tries. The gas needs time to vaporize in the carb.

This guy worries about all the shits that is NOT important... He forgot how to take care of the important stuff! Look in the " Descriptions " . Do we need to know what kind of Camera was filmed on or how it was put together? All it matters is HIS Tractor working, so he can do his job.... Hey, what do I know right? One thing I know, ALL my ENGINES start with few a Cranks or a few Pull!

One little spray of ether will save the life of yr battery & starter, i learned that from my newer Johndeere, runs great but in the cold it always starts hard, so one little spray it pops rite off ... 👍 thing works good ..

Remember everything with an engine is meant to run so start your equipment at least once a week regardless if it's winter, summer, spring or fall and move em around and let them run otherwise you'll get what you see in the video, a delayed start.

A single stage on a 400 series??.As long as your doing very thin and light snow, that's ok.But the two stage number 47 works heavy snow faster then this single stage does.

MichaelTJD60 No, I haven't fixed the ignition on the 322 yet.. I actually haven't touched it since. If you can believe it, the spark plugs were RUSTED solid. I got them out though. There are two main components to the Yanmar gas ignition. To trigger the spark, three transistorized "pulsar" modules are stationed around the flywheel and they send signals to three separate coils for the cylinders. I haven't even begun to troubleshoot. I have great spark in once cylinder, weak spark in the next and no spark at all in the third. If I can try switching the pulsar wiring around, that will help me diagnose whether the issue lies with the pulsars or the coils. If the coils are bad, I'll probably replace all three for $400.

Rusted solid? Must be a lot of moisture in the air or something. As cool as these Yanmar gas engines are I'm sure they are a challenge to work on since their specialty is diesel. Sounds like it's difficult to fix but you seem to know what you are doing. Good luck.

MichaelTJD60 The spark plugs are recessed in little cavities; water and rust collected in them and I ended up having to use a shop vac to suck all of the rust powder out before using PB Blaster to loosen the plugs. I'll get around to 'er eventually. Probably when the school semester finishes in April.

Wow. Nice going Yanmar. I guess that was the only gas motor they ever really produced, and just for JD since they are pretty much in bed together.

I know! My John Deeres are cranky! Temperature was hovering around -20 Celsius. The 340CCA U1 was dead as a doornail so I was boosting it with a fully charged 800CCA Optima Spiral Cell Group 34. Even with the fully charged booster battery that was as fast as it would crank! I haven't made the time to look yet but I know there's room to install a Group 51 battery like the MT51 for 500CCA. That's definitely a mod worth doing.

it seems like the problem is not with your battery but more with the starter - it sounds alot like starter drag. I would dismantle the starter and lubricate the bushings / bearings and clean all magnetic surfaces. This should allow the starter to operate at a much higher rate with a smaller battery.

Did you put the smaller sprocket on here or add a rubber center extension to it,cuz it sure throughs well. I'm going to be running a 49 thrower on a 140 H3 this winter and I've never had a thrower before,I hope it works as well as yours here.

green&yella fella - Is yours a single stage like his or a 2 stage? Single stage stage throwers in some types of snow actually do a better job but 2 stage handle deeper snow better. A single stage will bog down in wet snow more than a 2 stage. I have a 31 hp Simplicity Legacy 4 wheel drive for my new tractor with a single stage blower that works great. My last simplicity was a 22 hp Broadmoor with their 2 stage but I didn't feel I needed the 2 stage with the more powerful and much larger Legacy and I was right. In some cases the single stage allows faster snow blowing if you have the power to use them. I don't think he modified his blower at all from the looks of it.

Playtime the 49 is single stage,I picked it up today it has the tall chute and the 140 I'm gonna use it on is 14hp Kohler. The paddle and sprocket mods are things I've learned about on here, they help to stop clogging and throughs stronger. Thanks
