John Deere 42" Lawn Sweeper - Grass Pickup

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A great look at how well a lawn sweeper can pick up grass! Keep in mind this was a large amount of grass from an overgrown area, so the amount is a bit exaggerated. For normal cutting and sweeping don't expect as much, there simply isn't as much grass there. This will easily pick up grass wet or dry, though I prefer wet, as it isn't as dusty and will stay in the hopper better. Keep an eye out this fall to see how it does picking up leaves!

If you took that thing apart and seen how they work with the plastic gear and little pin in the shaft, you would probably slow down so it would last longer. They are not meant for high speed. Those plastic gears get hot and actually melt!

I have no issue with my plastic gears. I make sure to keep them lubricated with a teflon filled (PTFE) lubricant, and i've had great results with it.

Great video, yard looks great too! Went to look at a bagging attachment for my zero turn and it was like $700 with shipping… this looks like a good alternative. How hard is it to empty?

not hard unless you are picking up a lot of dirt and dust, or wet grass and you overfill it, it can get heavy, but normally it is easy to unload.

Thanks for share Josh! Have you ever tried to mow and use the sweeper at the same time? This would save a lot of time. I am curios if the sweeper can pick up damp grass. please let me know your comments.

It will pick up damp grass. Now for towing it while mowing, no. you would be wasting your time. The grass is discharged to the side, out of the path of the sweeper. The bigger 44” model I believe can be offset, so it may work with that one!

  • @BHOLT08

How fast are you towing that? Seems like you're cruising. Mine seems like the wheels are designed to move slowly, which is a pain because it takes FOREVER!

It feels like the wheels are restricted to move at a slower speed, I'm not sure how to explain it. Like there's a resistance when you move faster, the wheels kind of skip

  • @JoshsGreenGarage

I know what you mean about the wheels skipping. I’d imagine that has to do with drag from the brushes. I don’t usually pull it too much faster than mowing speed. I would recommend checking to make sure the brushed are clear, the plastic gear teeth aren’t worn or broken, and the inner side of the metal gear isn’t worn where the cam pin contacts it. If all is good I don’t think you have a problem. Some of this could also be terrain related if the ground pushes against the brushes too much, it could stop them.

Not collecting during mowing correct? Side discharge won’t be effective right?

Correct, I believe you can offset the 44” sweeper a bit so it may pick up some, but this one you will have to pull over everything again

Search "LPSTS42JD", a link for it on "greenpartstore.com" should come up. On that page, look just below the description for a parts breakdown link. The hamper is number 55, part number B1HR2420. The frame is 6 different pieces. I'll assume you damaged the top and bottom bar only? Both are number 53, part number is not listed for those, but this sweeper is made by Brinly. Their part number for the tubes is R-2194-10, and this tube can be purchased on that site though if you click on the repair parts link, or from Brinly. You can also get the Brinly hamper from Brinly, and you will save some money. The JD hamper is $154, Brinly is $119. Tubes are $25 each from the green store or $19 from Brinly. Email me if you need more specifics or have further questions. Hope this helps!

Mow first. If you pull it while mowing, you won't pick anything up. The deck will just shoot everything to the sde out of the way of the sweeper.

Mainly availability, it’s hard getting things in Alaska without paying a crazy amount for shipping. You can get lucky, I was actually able to get my dethatcher through Home Depot at ship to store for free, but not all tow behinds can be gotten at the big box stores like that. Other websites are hit an miss on if they will even ship to AK in the first place. Pretty much leaves you to dealer, there is one JD dealer chain in AK to my knowledge, with like 4 or 5 stores spread out to the major cities, I went in there one day and they had this one sitting there. After my hours of raking one night, I had to go home with it. Aside from that, I had the D105 at the time, so I was fine with the smaller one, same width as the deck! Now with the X580, it’s about the width of the wheels, and width of the deck overall, so works nice! Lastly I think after having it, I’d go with the 42” anyway because of the hitch setup that I pointed out in the overview video.

Nice, X370 and up are the only ones that are worth it in my opinion!… but yeah I’d stick with the 42”, even looking at the lift system on the 44” looks like a pain, can’t say for sure, but all in all the 42” looks like a better choice.

@@JoshsGreenGarage I did a lot of research and the x380 was the best fit for me. Didn’t really need the 90 and the hydraulics. Also after watching your videos I am glad I didn’t go to the X5** level. My yard is not as big and would be little over kill. I will prob get the snowblower attachment/44or42” sweeper (Not sure which yet) and a P10 cart. You think P10X is worth it?

Honestly I can't say you made a bad choice going non-hydro, less to go wrong! When it comes to the 10P or PX, again for me it came down to availability in the end. I was looking at a 10P, as an upgrade from an 8Y, and again, was at my dealer one day, and they happen to have the 10PX sitting there, so I took it home! It was an easy decision because home depot wouldn't send a 10P to Alaska, so my only other option would be pay an arm and a leg for shipping from some other site, or order and wait from the dealer. After concluding that both had the same weight capacity, I figured why not spend a bit more, have it right away, and have the full dump feature? I don't regret it one bit and use the full dump so far more than I ever thought I would. A quick look at greenpartstore.com has the PX at $80 more, that may vary where you are at, but you just have to decide if the extra money and full dump are worth it. I believe they are! I might do a video on deciding between different tow behinds and things to consider... We'll see

@JoshsGreenGarage I have a Z315E (zero-turn residential mower) and it works for me. You can also set the tow rod to the left, so the sweeper is positioned to the right, to sweep up from the discharge shute.
