Pretty nice. I have a 317 that I dropped in a new Kohler KT17 series 2 engine to replace my series 1. How do you have an oil filter? Where is it located? Does it have an adapter to put it remotely?

ilovemywifemost I’ve since sold this one to someone who really wanted it. lol but it had an oil filter on the block right under the cylinder head. I now have another repowered JD. A 314 with a vanguard 20hp.

I've done this same repower only a CH20. I went out of my way to retain the original cushioned mounts. Most (some) of the repower kits simply mount the engine solid. Even Deere did that with the Onan repowered 317 and continued it with the 318s. To the best of my knowledge, they are the only models with solid mounts. The vibration is quite noticable and it has led to broken oil pan attach bosses on those Onan engines. The engine fits snugly and the side covers can be retained by shimming them out. I made my own driveshaft using 1" keyed shafting and much heavier U-joints from McMaster Carr. One end of the rear U-joint needs to be bushed to the 1/2" shaft of the trans charge pump. Thats a standard bushing avaiIable most everywhere and it is cross pinned to the pump. I did need to trim the frame just under the rear tower area but not enough to weaken it appreciably. Its never been a problem. The key switch will need to be changed out to one suitable for a magneto ignition as that's what the CH series uses. As do most newer engines. This can be accomplished using a relay which cuts down on the rewiring. As for the crankshaft/driveshaft, a 1" adaptor can be purchased form Kohler for around $60. In my mind, one of the best improvements was installing a modern PTO clutch. Not only far superior to the Ogura/Warner but also much cheaper. Around $130 bucks as I recall. Just order a PTO with the same shaft size as your engine shaft. You will need to fabricate and install an anti-rotation pin on the engine for the new PTO clutch. When installing the engine, the main thing is lining up the front sheave to match the location of the original engine so mark it prior to removing the original engine. The later "V" series engines are all shorter than the flat types. This is where the longer driveshaft comes in. Of course if you have no intentions of running front mounted attachments or mowers, this would be less important. But why eliminate most of the functionality? While I was at it, I also installed power steering from a 400 JD but I later changed that out to a 425 system which was much easier and finally eliminated the pesty Ross steering of the 317. The 400 system is really "power-assist", not a true pwoer steering. I also installed the 400 3 spool hydraulics so I could operate the front blade and leave my tiller attached. That works very well when trying to move the heavy clay in our area. Till it up, then push it away. I have about 600 hours on this repower now and it hasn't developed any issues so far. I think I pretty much took care of all the shortcomings of the 317 and it is now as functional and tough as any. Good luck with yours. Hope that helps.

What model mower deck is that? I still have my original and it is tired. I see lots of more modern looking decks on 317 but my California JD Dealer just looks at me when I asked about decks that fit my 317 and then tries to sell me a new tractor. Where could I get a list so I could buy a new deck or a newer used deck like yours?

@@JnP-Restorations Thanks. Mine came with a 48 new from the dealer. I have been able to purchase used 48's and there is a smaller deck as well. I will start looking at 50's and see if one will fit. Thanks again.

That will put the trans is neutral so you can roll it. Turning in clockwise until it stops. Turning out will put it back in operating position.
