John Deere 2155, 5220, 5420 brakes locking up

JD 2155, 5220, 5420 and other JD tractors with similarly designed brakes lock up and cause the tractor to drag. This is a very simple fix to a design flaw. A gasket and two O-rings are all that need to be purchased provided there are no other issues.

    I wonder if you can help me, I have a John Deere 210 le Skiploader when I try to stop my Tractor the brakes pedals get stuck and then I have to release them with my foot , they just don’t come out on their own.

    Severely dragging. Not saying that you can't have a bad re-tractor. It just doesn't matter how strong the spring is if the pin can't return to it's original position due to the oil behind it. After replacing them and having the same problem occur on the same tractor, I noticed the pin and couldn't push it back in. How could the piston release the brake if the pins are staying out? Liquid doesn't compress so I slightly grooved them and no longer had the problem. We had the same problem with 2 other tractors and I didn't replace the re-tractors, just the o-rings and gasket, grooved the pins and didn't have any more trouble with those tractors again. Of course check for any broken spring or loose fit where the re-tractor seats in the piston. There is also a build up of gunk that can settle at the bottom that can not allow a total return. Always clean properly. Didn't make it a long video of the entire process, figuring you probably have some knowledge if you're attempting it in the first place🙂Best of luck

    Nice, but the brake in this video is NOT the same as the 5420. It's also not the problem. The problem IS the retractors and the fact that the spring pin slips in the hole in the axle housing. JD upgraded the retractor with a stronger spring and slightly larger spring pin but you may have to knurl the outside of the spring pin to get it to grip better. Bad design.

    I always appreciate helpful information. I’ve worked on these tractors for years and found that replacing those retractors did nothing to solve the problem. After simply putting the grooves on the sides of the pins, it allowed them to stay seated and no longer had to replace any retractors. I’ve done this personally to 4 tractors and never again had a problem. There are other problems that do exist with that design I agree but this does solve the problem in this instance.
