Comment
In the first set, recorded on March 28, 1960 in Dusseldorf, Germany, Coltrane was unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight when Miles Davis was unable play that day. It’s basically a performance of the Miles Davis Quintet without Davis. The lineup includes Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums.
The film was made during a European tour billed as “Norman Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic Presents Jazz Winners of 1960.” Two of the other “Jazz Winners” were Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson, both of whom join Coltrane and the band near the end of the Dusseldorf set. Getz plays on the last few songs. It’s a historic session-the only known recording of the two great saxophone players performing together. At the beginning of the final song, Thelonious Monk’s “Hackensack,” Peterson taps Kelly on the shoulder and takes over on the piano. (Mark Springer/Openculture)

the "advertisers" dont choose where to place the ads... The only 2 required are the start and end of video. The ads in the middle of a video are put there intentionally by the video poster. @ebjazz93 is the one profiting off the ads and has to manually select where to place them. Hes the a hole.

@@johnstamos8403 Hi, none of my videos are monetized by me on this channel, and I will never ask for money. Rights are paid to the rights owners. For this video, they are paid to a copyright manager called The Source, and i'm pretty sure ads profit mostly to youtube. So no, I don't choose. i'm just thankful my video is not blocked by right owners. Regards

I am tears! Baruch HASHEM! I love humanity ❤️ No wars and unnecessary violence and conflict!! ❤️❤️❤️
I did not know this video existed. Superlatives fail me! When I was studying jazz in the 1980s I would have freaked out if I saw this video! THE Paul Chambers!!! What a treasure!! Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb were MAGIC together!! And TRANE!!! Mind officially blown!! This music has such force in it. It's like a freight train going by! Thanks!!!
I love Oscar Peterson to death, but Wynton Kelly's phrases here are some of the best hard bop piano recorded in history ❤ True Giants

Your opinion is welcomed , have enjoyed jazz since the 50's. It is an on going learning and loving experience. Hearing people's opinions is positive and takes me places not traveled.
Stan Getz was a monster - but especially brave here even having the nerve to play after Coltrane. Soloing after Coltrane had to be the most intimidating thing ever.

I always found this sort of jazz very motivating. It's just inside playing, but at the top of the art form with great economy, passion, and mastery.

Yes!! Outside playing is a really cool concept but I agree entirely.
This is a great update to the versions that were on KZread a few years ago. The sound is crisp and the video quality got fixed. Thank you for keeping this wonderful music alive. We gotta keep spreading good music in a world where everything is starting to be so unoriginal. Hope all have a wonderful day.

Not an aficionado by any means, but this is the first time I've ever heard Coltrane and Getz on the same stage. A treat to say the least. Gracias.
3:49, Wynton's opening four bars plus the surprise on the drums, great stuff.
It’s so heart-filling to see this video and Trane so alive next to our eyes
Really sweet moment when Trane and Stan smile at each other before Hackensack. Coltrane face is usually in zen firestorm transcendent zone...
I first saw John Coltrane Live at a little dive just north of Hollywood Blvd. named Shelly's Mann-Hole. Anybody interested in L.A'.s serious Jazz back in the 60s, "The Mann Hole" was the place for the urban jazz snobs like me. I was 15-16 years old then. My old man listened to Louis Armstrong. and played a little free-form jazz on the piano. I was amazed because he had never studied the rules and played without sheet music. Charles Lloyd fronted Coletrane that night at the Hole. Unfortunately, Lloyd left for Europe early in his career and stayed. Too bad I appreciated what he was doing. I've had the privilege of some great musicians there. One of my favorite musicians and pianist was Theolonius Monk. His quirky personality was at its height. Watching this video on KZread brings back some fine memories.

Getz and Coltrane with the most awesome Section Backing Ever. They both shaped Jazz!
Nice! Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz and Coltrane all playing together is a once in a lifetime kind of thing, Amazing that it was recorded, and now colourised! If you're open to requests I would love to see the Wes Montgomery rehearsal footage of his group with four saxes and Martial Solal in Hamburg 1965. Edit: I take it back, just realised it's already on your channel! Thanks so much for these.

Watching this in color makes it feel so much more real. It makes me want to practice some tunes.
Recorded by German TV. It was meant to be Miles Davis' Quintet but Miles didn't want to do it. So Oscar and Stan did it instead, who were also on the JATP European Tour.
The magical harmonisation of Coltrane 💯
Amazing! Lots of love for Wynton, he's got beautiful, hard hitting soulful phrases. Thanks
Why human feeling is so beautiful like that?
My favourite jazz session of all time and now in colour - excellent work 😍
The soundstage is what really pulled me into this and I’m listening through Sony XM4 headphones. I can’t wait to play this on the living room system!
A true master my favorite a true giant in the pantheon of horn player only Armstrong and Davis could you put ahead of this titan
One of the most legendary jazz recordings!
Absolutely fantastic! “Thank you” is so inadequate! Wonderful!
Great clip. And good to hear Coltrane in a somewhat - pensive- mood. Wynton Kelly has, as always, the right touch. Why spoil this clip, at times, with those distracting sound graphics is beyond me. But this this superb Jazz, folks. Dig, G’day & Cheers!
Historic and beautiful. Thanks for posting!

WOW, AMAZIMG & BEAUTIFUL! Mr. John Coltrane took no prisoners, damn he was awesome! Incredible rhythm section!
The outro, with the closeup of Coltrane and Getz's hands and fingers is lovely. What a pleasure to have this document available to us now.
Oscar Peterson was a monster on the piano!
One of the things I love about jazz (and 1960 tv), is the incongruence of Wynton Kelly's chair.
Que epoca, por dios!!!, todos maestros!!
Jazz doesn't get any better than this!!! Amazing. Oscar Peterson is mind blowing!!!

paul chambers ... words fail me , the arco solo around 7 mins in ... jeez.. I'd love to know what strings he's using , specifically the tension ... they look nice and low tension but he's still bowing where one would on medium and they sound low tension pizz. that's my goal .. low tension for pizz. with some nice fingerboard growl and yet i can bow them of needed .. even if i have to sand the bow with the bridge lol
Trane casually creating “the lick” at 1:37 😂

Too bad they couldn't raise the level on Getz (on Hackensack) after Coltrane's great solo. Great gig though, and great to see them "live". Thanks
