Some people can talk hours and there´s still interesting, John Cleese is one of those!

I could listen to John Cleese talk about his life and life in general for hours on end and would never be bored.

This man is funny, intelligent, extremely knowledgable. He has such a sharp mind. I just love how he can answer everything so easily, so sharp, and always gives good points. He can speak about comedy and the next second he turns it into psychology and human condition/behaviour etc. His mind is fascinating.With all that, and still being superbly modest.

Python, Cleese, and their shows taught me there is a better way to think about the big issues. It suggested that we question the way things are as well as that there are very intelligent people out there who are able to take a step back. Its often made me laugh, gave me comfort, and made me think. Not much in my daily life gets to me on an emotional level. However, I recently watched pieces of the 02 show here on KZread. Parts of it had me in tears because it reminded me they are getting on in years. Terry Jones sadly has since passed. I am really grateful to have enjoyed their comedy and recently some of Cleese's wisdom about life. Best to all.

John Cleese is always funny and intelligent. Truly a delight to listen to.

John is a genius I've been laughing at him for over 35 years .....watching fawlty towers and python as a kid Hes a national treasure

The story about Graham Chapman and the carrot made me laugh like in the good old days. We need brave & funny people like Chapman nowadays..! Great to have Cleese around, he is still very funny and bright.

What a god damn LEGEND!

The first time iv'e ever heard John talk about Rat Race. He was great in that!!!

Pure joy and very educational. Thank you for posting this.

This guy is incredibly normal and that's one of countless ways he's so funny, he compares what should be normal to whats actually happening. I love it! Always always always a pleasure to here him chat. I totally laughed at this point he made, but with computers you have a physical off switch, which shuts everything down, saves electricity but erases everything in memory and takes longer to get going again. You have a standby/sleep/hibernate mode which selectively turns certain things off or puts the PC into a low power mode which saves a little electricity but boots up quicker. In the older computers when you shut them completely off, you had to reload the Disk Operating System (DOS) using about 8 5 1/4" floppy disks. Which really used to annoy the crap out of my Intro to computers teacher because he had to do it all himself before class started. So imagine 10 or 15 ancient TRS-80 Z80 processors at 1.77 MHz. Not gigahertz, but Mega-hurts. I deeply apologize Mr. Truchon, for all the mischief. Sorry, my therapist advised me to seek forgiveness from the ones I've caused great distress. Blogging on his memorial page didn't seem appropriate, as it did not go over well on my parents page, lesson learned. So if I could get someone to type up a list of everyone that's read this annoying paragraph, much appreciated and I will get to you all eventually. God bless :-)

20:01 - Just brightened my day

A thoroughly nice man, I had the pleasure to chat to and work with on the Monty Python film "The Meaning of Life" both John & Michael Palin & Director Terry, came over to sit with us while on Location Filming for (Part Two- "Growth & Learning" at lunch time, I had a small featured artist roll, in the school Chapel scene, As a big Python fan, from the first B/W TV show days, it was a dream come true to be involved in making a Monty Python Film, and they guys were so friendly, humble, and such fun to work with.

I'm listening to his book--the one he reads from--on Audible, and it's read by him. It's hilarious and even fascinating.

Such a nice funny interesting man. A global treasure.

benedictify I disagree... but if you ever want a chance of being funny then at least memorise the speech and tell it like you mean it... it doesn't make any sense to 'read' out loud that you can't remember your name... that's your believability out of the window right at the start.

Watched this with my wife’s family. I wonder if John’s Dad was clinging to the parenting role out of his fear or sadness over sharing a home with just his wife. I feel sad for her and wonder what specifically she experienced, probably during the world wars, that made her so afraid all the time.

Actually, he is more than right there "I would like to make a Documentary about very Rich People and why they have to have so much Money ... because i don't understand it ... it's like people that dress up in Latex Rubber to become Sexually Excited ... i just don't see the point of having seven million dollars" ... I am confused about that as well. There are so many Super, Ultra Rich people in the world ... and all they do is try to get *more* money ... what's the point of that? Quite impressionable, of all the conspiracy videos out there now (not including the inserted ones), he is laughing with everyone about what is so obvious anyway. A great court jester, the absolute funniest, endlessly.

i do love Mr Cleese but I would suggest that real creative genius doesn't have a lot to do with relaxation - was Beethoven a relaxed person or a chaotic stressed person? did Bach do what he did by being relaxed? Did Mr Cleese himself not achieve his most funny output under the strain of neurosis? Also i would beg to differ that our own era is less creative than other eras - Gervais has arguably achieved just as much as he did in terms of comedy output for example.

Thanks for a great comment, I agree that an idea can just come from nowhere and then may need some time to fully develop in a more conscious state. As you say, his theory probably does have some truth in it, but needs to be added into a more complex and even contradictory mix perhaps

At 58:55 John mentions the romantic scenes in a Marx brothers film as not being funny. Irving Thalberg the producer of several if the MGM Marx bros. comedies wanted those scenes figuring that there had to be a theme that ran through the film so that the Marx bros. could be seen as helping the lovers, etc. In that way, their silliness would have some basis, and the audience would be more supportive of their efforts. He further said that his Marx bros. movie would have less jokes, but would double the revenue. Groucho Marx confirmed that this did happen. But the overall conclusion that a lot of comedy doesn't work is correct, including with Monty Python. I've read an account of a daughter introducing her parents to MP, and was dismayed that the skits were not funny at that time. Plus, I know of whole hunks that are not funny, at least to a US ear, or mine in particular. But then there are the brilliant parts, nudge nudge, wink wink.

Interviewer chemistry isn't there. He also fails to bring the interview to an end in a timely way. He say's last question then just goes on for another 15mins. Cleese, the professional, subtly gives an anecdote, about time and repeatitive things, but the guy just doesn't get the hint. The interviewer's slouchy posture in contrast to Cleese's upright and attentive manner are interesting.

The British only play cricket matches with other countries is because you used to own them. Maybe Americans could play baseball against Baghdad. and Soccer as a word was invented at Oxford University and it meant association football as opposed to rugger which was rugby football.

Then -- at the behest of TV presenters -- they come back to the everyday to voice their own political opinions - they become as annoying as your cousin or neighbor offering an unsolicited political opinion; their opinions simply do not matter - their accomplishments made them famous. Now they want to enter the quotidian newspaper sphere of political opinion? Now they want to alienate half their fan base? Why? It all retroactively soils their achievement ...

Monte Town Lord Monckton is a spin meister! He has contradicted himself many times and rarely (if ever) admits to having made a mistake.
