It’s been a decade since John Carpenter recorded the material that would become Lost Themes, his debut album of non-film music and the opening salvo in one of Hollywood’s great second acts. Those vibrant, synth-driven songs, made in collaboration with his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies, kickstarted a musical renaissance for the pioneering composer and director. In the years since, Carpenter, Carpenter, and Davies have released close to a dozen musical projects, including a growing library of studio albums and the scores for David Gordon Green’s trilogy of Halloween reboots. With Lost Themes IV: Noir, they’ve struck gold again, this time mining the rich history of the film noir genre for inspiration.
Since the first Lost Themes, John has referred to these compositions as “soundtracks for the movies in your mind.” On the fourth installment in the series, those movies are noirs. Like the film genre they were influenced by, what makes these songs “noirish” is sometimes slippery and hard to define, and not merely reducible to a collection of tropes. The scores for the great American noir pictures were largely orchestral, while the Carpenters and Davies work off a sturdy synth-and-guitar backbone. The noir quality, then, is something you understand instinctively when you hear it. “Some of the music is heavy guitar riffs, which is not in old noir films,” Davies notes. “But somehow, it’s connected in an emotional way.”
The trio’s free-flowing chemistry means Lost Themes IV: Noir runs like a well-oiled machine-the 1951 Jaguar XK120 Roadster from Kiss Me Deadly, perhaps, or the 1958 Plymouth Fury from John’s own Christine. It’s a chemistry that’s helped power one of the most productive stretches of John’s creative life, and Noir proves that it’s nowhere near done yielding brilliant results.

Plays games all the time, stays comfortably high, and drops absolute bangers like this with his kids. John Carpenter's retirement plan is aspirational.

I seriously can't stop listening to this. I feel like it's a perfectly fitted hoodie.
School is in session a master of the dark synthwave genre is speaking. John your art has stood the test of time and was formative to me as a young person growing up it provided solace to me and the social anxiety I felt your truly a master of your craft and I'm happy to see you out here still getting it! Never look back on any of it with remorse you gave the world dark and beautiful art you didn't sell out your visions redefined storytelling. This video and its cintext makes me as a history nerd think of WW2 SOE members deep behind enemy lines or detectives on the trail of a brutal and illusive serial killer.
I would absolutely love to see John direct the ultimate L.A. noir crime thriller and hear this music in it. This is superb. I also think the guitar playing is awesome. Killer lead playing, mean chords, big tone, and it screams. John is unique in that he was one of the very few filmmakers who can also score his own work, and not just give you his vision but the sonic landscape that goes with it. I love this.
Many have tried to emulate the master. Many have failed. Also succeeded. John is one of the greatest artists of our time!
Say what you want, he's a fu**ing genius.
Wow, what a piece of music. And what a video. And Weyes Blood as the victim. I think I'll buy the vinyl today.
Gosh, when that guitar kicked in the hair stood up on my neck!
Dropping Natalie Mering in there is so crazy.
No one looks so damn cool standing behind the keyboard and pushing the keys like John Carpenter! No wonder he gave birth to such ultimate cool icons like Wilson or Snake. Great music all three of you guys! Keep it coming!
John Carpenter and his son damn this music slap so hard ! Carpenter son & dad are real genius

Chill and rock as I like. John Carpenter is definitively one of the best ambient music producer ever.
Purrfect! The real Kat's meow. I keep watching it!

Don't sleep on Cody and especially Daniels solo material also. Crazy talent for one band
Epic, purely epic! I have to echo the sentiments of some of the others. I'm fortunate to live in a time where John Carpenter is still making music! I'd love to see one more movie from him but if this is what we get, I'll take it! Thank you JC and thank you for They Live, it's my favorite documentary!

This rocks my bones 💀 Amazing cinematography paired with legends of music.
The music for all movies ! And the video is the essence of the cinematic style
i wish they called themselves The Carpenters
Just awesome, melancholy synths and screaming electric guitar riffs. WOW I need to play it again !!!
This is surely the best music video I have seen in my life - no surprise.
What can be said that hasn't already been said? Simply more sublime brilliance from the Master of Horror... and Music. Absolutely love it! xx

Wow this is amazing as a long time fan of Carpenter's scores his production has only gotten better over the decades
John Carpenter forever!!!
This was the most captivating, bad-ass song and video. From here on out, whenever I’m driving around at night, this will be the only song I listen to. The master.

No. If there's one thing that's embarrassing the film industry these days, it's bringing back old heroes who think they've still got it in their 70's and 80's. Let the old action heroes die, this isn't their time anymore. Besides that, anytime they do bring them back, it always ends up being lackluster.
John carpenter needs to have a another concert asap
Yes! Father and son, and godson, did it! This song is perfection! This song sounds like a combination of the best Joy Division song, and the best Pink Floyd song. You all have to know: When you are in real music, in art music, you will find out, there is no more music, beyond Joy Division and Pink Floyd. Mr Carpenter and sons, have found out it too. Congratulation!
Would love a new Carpenter flick.

Misha Lindes reminds me strongly of a young Stacey Keach in this music video.
I’ve always liked John’s music, but I started listening to it A LOT over the past two years after I read the band Dante High citing it as an influence.
I was just watching Body Bags. Thanks for the music John, Cody and Daniel.
Mamma mia!!! John the immortal guy!
I'm used to seeing Carpenter on features. Watching and hearing his projects is such a treat!!! I'm just captivated by the screen. All my senses are in bliss. 💥 Make it better? He was jamming towards the end, during the wrap-up
Great music. Cool noir.
Awesome! Perfect! Loved it! 😎👍
This. Fucking. Bass. Line. I'm entranced by it! It's simple, elegant, and catchy...all in one! It's so good, I can easily hear it when the bass isn't even playing.
Would love to see him perform live again!
оч круто Джон ! Thanks so much!
My kinda atmosphere. Love it.
from the interviews I read John Carpenter played in rock n roll band as a teenager in Kentucky...before choosing to goto film school. Pretty cool that he's doing this after a long run making movies. And the most of the band is with family. I don't care for this video much. The song itself is ok. The first two albums I found to be really good.

So stylish. So moody. Anything scored by Carpenter is a masterclass. I can hear shades of the new Halloween scores in there but there's notes that remind me of Prince of Darkness too.
