5 years ago I thought I would never be able to play this song on guitar.... and here I am 5 years later realizing I was right.

Creative if it wasn’t stolen...
It's amazing John is able to change this song into many versions, but nothing will ever beat his studio video version of 11/12 years ago!
he has never ever played this song the same way twice....its the only song in the world that i know that is evolving constantly....its the same song but totally different....this song is life...goes on and on forever and thats the way it should be! Amazing artist who deserves waaay more attention than he gets
Late reply I know, just wanted to clarify a few things. He was never homeless but he did and still does sometimes busk (which is also known as street performing).2 while he is signed to record labels abroad, he started out and still remains independent here in Australia. Kind regards
I have never watched a video 4 (now 5) times in a row. This is it. And the reason for picking my guitar up after nearly 20 years. This is incredible and thanks for sharing. New follower now.
"John Butler doesn't play guitar, John Butler is the guitar"
Unemphatic humans never going to have the ability to appreciate this beautiful peace of art... I feel for them.
Extraordinary pieces of music... Totally agreed
I met John Butler years ago in perth, Amazing guy! The album: John Butler Trio Three👍 This song was originally released on a album called searching for heritage.
Had the privilege of seeing him in Perth this year, fantastic concert and this song is amazing
Dude, I so relate to what you said about this piece of music. I heard it several years ago also. Good job
Man ... John Butler is... fucking genius you know that ? I'm sure me.
So much good stuff from them to watch/ listen to
I love John Butler but feel he is a bit naive as far as human nature but love his spirit. I do wish more people focused on the positive and not the negative. Ah well. I love this song. I love that it is a bit different every time you listen to it live. His talent is just phenomenal and breathtaking.
I highly recommend checking out the version live at Federation Square. It's a bit more refined, and the energy of the crowd elevates this already perfect song to another level

My favourite is Rothbury 09. But that's the best thing about Ocean, it's always changing.
Just for the record dude he is Independent
Three things: One, I love that you've flipped the script and recommended some great music to us. And this was spectacular. Thank you for sharing. I'm definitely checking out more of this fellow's work. Amazing, beautiful piece. Two, you spoke about the format and style of this. I note elements of folk, bluegrass, and rock sensibilities in here, but as for the musical form, I'd almost call this a "guitar sonata" in technical musical language. Probably why it makes me think of Mike Oldfield's stuff, since he is consciously a "composer" in the classical sense, but just happens to think electric instruments and modern arrangements belong in compositions. And three, now that you've put me thinking of that comparison, I also want to listen to some of Mike Oldfield's more guitar-centric pieces, like "Outcast," "Let there be Light," or "Secrets/Far Above the Clouds" for the first time in a while.

Chris Check Oooooo! Yes! Mike Oldfield! I haven't listened to his music in years! That's a great shout Chris! Glad you liked this. I often return to this piece of music because it's so raw, live and human. There are little mistakes in there and that just makes it more "real" and utterly musical.

Chris Check oh, and as far as flipping the script, totally! This is a two way street! Get used to it, there'll be more to come 😁

...and as a bassist, I'd be remiss to not mention Michael Hedges best friend and collaborator, Michael Manring, playing his 3 octave fretless bass. Each string has a hipshot detuner, and the bridge is adjustable as well. Needless to say, nothing is in standard tuning... kzread.info/dash/bejne/gIaAl5Olp6u_gbg.html
Love the reactions! Have you ever heard of a band called punch brothers? I really think you would appreciate them as musicians and composers and I'd love to see what you think.
Sean penn is phenomenal at guitar 😉
JBT, amazing guitarist and amazing band. Number two on my private list. Not progressive stuff off course but I really love their acoustic sound. Greetings from Poland!!! PS. Still waiting for my favorite Mastodon, man. Any song from their Crack the Skye album at best. The longest songs are the best and the most progressive.

Hello Poland!!! I would love to do some Mastodon, will be adding this to the list. By the way, Prog is one of a million genres - I'll listen to anything (mostly) :)

@@JimNewstead Great, the last JBT album called Home is very good. Ok, I'm waiting for your Mastodon reaction. I recommend The Czar, The Last Baron, The Sparrow, Oblivion or Jaguar God. Studio versions are usually better. Anyway, great band. Not as heavy as Gojira, musically closer to the great hard and prog bands from the 70's.
The best version of this is the live at federation square in Melbourne its amazing
OMG! Jim great choice........ I loved it. Thanks for sharing! Check discussion page.........

Ann Waychoff thanks Ann, I'm on my mobile phone at the mo so can't see the discussion page but will when I'm back at the pc tomorrow at work. Glad you liked this. It's one of those pieces of music that I will keep going back to, just because, I don't know, it kinda speaks to me. Oh, and by the way, I checked out the Disturbed video you suggested a week or two ago, and realised I'd heard this before, never knew who did this. The song is such a famous piece, as soon as I heard it I knew that this wasn't going to be good for a reaction. Absolutely heart wrenching piece of music though. I might put it up as a share in due course..... Thinking about doing a 'covers that are better than the originals' slot on here. That would be an awesome addition!
John butler was never homeless? he was buskin a bunch on the streets of fremantle but not livin on the streets, where did u get that from?

Pretty sure he did live in a tree for a while- as a protest against logging old growth forests, if I recall correctly. There was a platform build around a tree right up at the canopy, and he lived in that for 3-6 months. That’s dedication.
that wasnt really a reaction... you jst reuploaded his song and at the end said 'wow, that was John Butler at redrock'

That was actually a really a real reaction.
there are many versions of this song. of course as he has been recorded playing it many times. this was good but not the best version, for me anyway
Classify "blues and roots"
studio version 2012 better
Love for John Butler but, why would i want to look at some dude watching his vid? please don't make this content
