Wow, I'm in conflict about what I want for this country and for this man. A part of me wishes that this man was our prime minister as he genuinely sounds like a good human being first and foremost with integrity abounds. But the other part of me doesn't want him to to be our prime minister for his sanity. I don't want his good character that I perceive he has to be tainted by the slime, lies, scandal that comes from being in that world. But yes, selfishly we need more men like him in power.

@@sianscountrylife4925 He was quintessentially sacked. It was declared that the Tories would field another candidate in his seat and knowing he would lose he resigned. This too was why he was only too happy to help prevent the Tory party getting their general election, even if that meant depriving the country a chance to demonstrate that which was already so obvious in the polls, that the country had had its fill of parliament being handcuffed, the supreme court making unprecedented interventions and remainer mps machinating with motions designed to interrupt and disrupt brexit. He could have proved his principals popular by standing independently but he brushed such notions under the carpet and instead pretended the time was right and that it was his choice and now here you are mistaken in your belief that he retained a democratic mandate.

Lost me at "... and I'm a big fan of my colleagues" even more so with his stance on Tony Blair and Iraq. He was happy with his vote for war even though subsequently that war killed more people than Saddam ever could and continues to this day killing civilians through depleted uranium and other toxic weapons. If he had to feel guilty about something it should be this, not youthful racism. I find it all too easy imagining him starting a war with Russia if he were in charge. As he says himself, eloquence per se doesn't make what is said correct ... and eloquent he is. What use a Labour government if their vision is Blairite?

This is a wonderful story of a vast political journey, from a young would-be conservative associated with far-right movements (which he admits to and calls his younger self out - most people would be trying to hide that for their careers' sake), to a relatively moderate conservative MP, to a progressive liberal idealist who champions the rights of various minority groups and has given them more representation in Parliament than ever before. I don't have any loyalties to one party or another, as a foreign viewer to UK affairs, but I can respect a good, honest politician. There's more out there in the world than people think: most just rarely tend to make major headlines. Comments here are obviously divided on Bercow and Brexit. I'm not about to get into an argument on all that; I'm only here to state my paltry view and leave in peace. I respect John Bercow and admire him and the work he did during his time in office greatly. There is no basis of proof of the current allegations against him, which seem like the same sort of political slander levied against him by rivals over the course of his entire career, and so I don't regard them. I believe in focusing on what he has done and continues to do, which is to bring awareness to Parliamentary reform and further diversity efforts.

The worst atrocities in Britain have been from Islamic extremists (the London Bridge terrorist) and XRWT (the Incel inspired terrorist in Plymouth summer 21)

Dictatorship is certainly an issue of concern and it is just the other side of the coin, however, it does not exist only in Muslim countries I am afraid, rather it subsists in many other countries in different shapes. I condemn dictatorship, does not matter how it exists. But, at the same time, I also believe, that invasion can never be the solution of eradicating dictators, since a lot of innocent people get killed in the process, and as I said earlier, that it also gives birth of groups of people having extremist thoughts and ideologies, history says. While I am definitely a fair bit to the left of Bercow's current political position, I none the less like him, I am specifically talking about his time as Speaker, I was not aware of him when he held positions that he now feels are wrong, but that he is honest about his past is a credit to him and something more politicians should embrace. As Speaker he stood for what he believed was right and fair, he did indeed do an awful lot to reform parliament and make it more open and diverse, he also made parliament more accessible to everyone and in particular he made politics and parliament something young people can get exposure to, learn about and perhaps even get more excited about than is traditionally the case. I think he deserves to be a Lord for that progress alone! Not to mention that it is something all of his predecessors have been honoured with and to exclude him alone is frankly discriminatory, whether it be due to political, retaliatory or bigoted reasons doesn't really matter, what matters is that it is discrimination. I think we have all seen Bercow under fire and in very stressful situations and he has never lost his temper, he sometimes quips back a witty riposte at people but it is always an amusing repartee, I have even seen him upset and hurt but even then he doesn't lash out, at worst you could say he has been exasperated or frustrated at times but he has _never_ come across as aggressive or intimidating and certainly not acted as a bully. To be honest, it sounds like these people have either been pressured/persuaded to speak out in *ordah* to tarnish his reputation and to validate them not making him a Lord or they are very insecure people who get upset and defensive if someone doesn't praise them and agree with them in which case they have no business being in politics where there are always at least two sides to most issues and someone is likely to disagree with you at some point. While, of course they need to investigate if such allegations have been _officially_ made, this should be done quickly and efficiently and if as I suspect his name is cleared, they have no excuse for excluding him from his rightful position in the House of Lords, which he has more than earned! I would go so far as to say he probably deserves it more than many who are currently sitting in the Other Place!

I'm not normally a Channel 4 News fan as they are far too left leaning for my liking. However, this interview was excellent and very informative. It revealed a side of John Bercow we've not seen before and Krishnan Guru-Murthy conducted the interview well, giving Bercow space to make his points without the usual interruptions. Is this a sign that Channel 4 News is improving? Let's hope so. Great interview.

Kenny Shortcake perhaps it’s a sign that Ch4 News’s political position was best served by allowing Bercow to communicate his views, just as much as they are often served by suppressing and challenging the views of their other interviewees. You don’t have to watch much of ch4 news to realise it’s basically propaganda.

My mates would get a lot of racial abuse from the Poles and we would get into loads of fights on nights out and it really benefitted my mates that a white guy would be able to talk the police down on their behalf. That might be accurate (short term), but long term we will indeed learn, and do better. Plus there are external variables that will impact all of this, for example the looming tsunami of smart automation that is projected to generate massive unemployment (50% ?), by mid-century or even sooner, in every developed economy, which will in turn require implementation of Universal Basic Income (for purposes of national survival), which will in turn generate a more reasoned approach to all of the above. In other words, today's GOP, in the U.S., is on the wrong side of history, and is looking at its own demise within the next 5-10 years, although meanwhile it will indeed be able to generate quite a lot of regrettable mischief.

what a great guy, really enjoyed listening to his story. It's good to see that when he was young he was aware of the people he was involved with and distanced himself from them. Hopefully the anti semitism from Labour wasn't too much for him to have to put up with.
