    I've followed Naka since he had 14k subs, I liked him for his chess brilliance rather than he's personality, he always came off a little strange to me, from the banning anyone who critiqued him to the muting chat after he lost, insulting people when he beats them, crying when he loses, valuing fame over friendship. thinking he's better than everyone else, the list goes on. I honestly stopped watching him because the way he acts just triggers me. even though I admire he's chess ability he isn't a person for me and I'm glad we have guys like magnus to humble him.

    I honestly don't understand the people who see nothing wrong with Hikaru's behaviour here. Him being unnecessarily rude is not the main issue; the problem is that he praised John not because he actually liked his play--he clearly didn't--but because he cares so much about maintaining a public image which is just a façade. He deserves to be disliked for being two-faced, not for being an asshole.

    Agree about this. You can say whatever you want about his rude behavior, but the toxicity is just Hikaru being Hikaru. Tbf, toxic Hikaru is actually really entertaining. But his tendency to tell people one thing privately and then something else in public is just fake. Makes me believe he actually enjoy abusing other player. But he is also aware of his public image and reputation. He knows his toxic behavior isn't appreciated or even accepted so he change just to present himself as better than he is.

    See, it's okay to impartially critique one's play, but John described the private correspondence as "mean" and what Elliot Landström says also supports that. This leads me to believe that Hikaru was likely trying to be condescending as well. If Hikaru really cared about being honest with his opponent, then he would have been honest with his audience as well. If Hikaru thought that the way John played lacked value, then he shared a game with his community that lacked value, and basically wasted the time of anyone trying to learn something from the game. But of course, you can always learn something from every chess game, which instead leads me to believe that Hikaru was probably just condescending for no apparent reason.

  • @Zenlollipop

    @Zenlollipop

    There's nothing you're 'supposed to' do. One can in general do whatever they want. JB is just telling a story of how Hikaru rubbed him the wrong way. More to your point, you can definitely point out mistakes after a chess game, compare ideas and what not if your opponent wants to. Whatver Hikaru said (and JB clearly doesn't want to repeat it), JB did not like it, and I doubt it's something as mundane as saying 'Why didn't you play (move) here? You played (move) instead, which at best leads to a draw).' Literally everyone who has played chess will have heard that at some point. However, you're wrong in thinking that it's good etiquette to simply 'praise' your opponent's play in game annotations to be nice. Hikaru's 'job' for lack of a better word is not to rate JB as being a good or bad chess player. It's to analyze and commentate the game for his readers. You are not being mean or nice to someone when you comment on their moves in a chess game, because there are more or less objectively correct moves unlike most other sports or video games. Nothing Hikaru says will change John's rating or other people's perception/expectation of John's abilities and performance. Given this, you have to assume that his analysis in the game annotations are his true thoughts, and from there it stems that he didn't really think John made subpar moves, he was simply frustrated because the position was drawn for so long and he had to win. Attacking opponents because you're frustrated or to simply hurt them is the definition of being a toxic player, and that's why this looks bad. But this obviously is far from the worst experience someone has had with Hikaru; for someone known to be the quintessential toxic player he must have done some wacky stuff in his earlier years (he seems to have mellowed out a bit later in his twenties).

Perhaps in Hikaru's mind it was encouraging like "You were playing great, I think you just need to be a little more active to get to the next level" but in John's mind it's "Why are you playing for a draw to farm my rating?". I'm trying to be charitable here and not diagnose. I don't know and like I said there are many spectrums, could be a mood disorder. Lots of ways stuff can get lost in translation, especially online.
