John Aldridge on his incredible rise from amateur football in Liverpool

Спорт

John Aldridge recalls his first visit to Anfield and how he fell in love with Liverpool Football Club as a young boy growing up on Merseyside. 'Aldo' also talks about his days playing around the amateur scene in Liverpool in the 70s before signing for South Liverpool in 1978, a move that would eventually lead to him being one of the top strikers in European football.
The former Ireland international was speaking to Tommy Martin for our Sports Stories: John Aldridge episode.

I grew up watching the Liverpool videos and Roger Hunt was brilliant to watch on it. The goals he scored were incredible.

I’m a lifelong Newport County fan remember him making his debut, he came just at a classic period for the club - promotion to the old third division, winning the Welsh Cup and narrowly going out of the European Cup Winners Cup in the quarterfinals. He’s quite rightly regarded as a County legend.

Still a Newport County legend to this day. Len Ashurst gave him a stepping stone to playing for Liverpool.

must have been tough for him, where the violin? playing for the top team for a hefty salary then paid off with a six figure sum when his services were no longer required, then goes on to earn more than when he was at Liverpool and living in Spain...it must have been so tough! heart bleeds.
