Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750); Prelude and Fugue in G Major, BWV 541

Präludium und Fuge in G-Dur
Recorded on the amazing Goll-organ in Weilheim an der Teck.
What you just heard, was S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in G Major, which - as Timothy Judd describes it - “springs to life with a leaping upward triad. This simple motivic cell unleashes a playful, dancing musical line which opens the door to torrents of sparkling and boldly-spirited virtuosity, combining the festive technique of “Stilus Fantasticus” with elements of Italian orchestral music. Filled with an infectious sense of joy and exuberance” , it is not surprising that “it was written when Bach was in his 20s. Thrilling contrapuntal and harmonic adventures follow, punctuated by a brash Neapolitan cadence which launches the Fugue into its euphoric final bars. In its original form, the Prelude and Fugue was probably written around 1712 when Bach was in his 20s in Weimar. Years later in 1733, Bach provided it to his son, Wilhelm Friedemann, as an audition piece for the music director post of Sophienkirche in Dresden“ - and of course, it was successful.
Also pay attention to the driving eight notes in the Prelude which will reappear in the fugue subject.

Love the tempo! So many rush through it and it gets muddy very quickly. Thank you!

Dear Mirjam Haag, many thanks for the information "an der Teck" and its' history ( I'm still back in the 19th century - use an atlas!!!!). Again many thanks also for your recitals that I get on "KZread". I enjoy watching organists such as yourself (and thus mainly women,) who not only play the music, but also immerse themselves in the music at the same time. I am of the opinion that many male organists only play what is in front of them. Again, thank you for your reply and your music -- please don't stop.!!! If ever you come "down under"( yes, I live in Australia), see if you can have a concert on the Sydney Town Hall organ, and /or the Sydney Opera House organ( the Town Hall organ is better for the audience - can see you playing!! Graham.

Fantastisch gespielt 😍!

Great performance! The ornaments are a nice touch. You forgot to mention that the fugue subject was originally used in the opening chorus of the cantata BWV 21 "Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis". And how about the impressive "stretti" (four overlapping entries of the subject, one in each voice ) in the 7 bars of the coda, following the Neapolitan chord!

WOW!!!! M(?iss/rs?) Mirjam Haag, I can see that Herr J.S.Bach was with you whilst you were playing, through your body and facial interactions !! WOW again, so well played and (to me,)the "orchestration" organised(!!)by you, showed your excellent playing of such a wonderful piece of music --- just beautiful++++++. Could you please tell me where 'Weillheim an der Teck is -- can't decide if it's Germany or Holland?? Again, thank you so much for a wonderful presentation of beautiful, well known piece of music. Graham.

I always use Google maps to find out where places are. The "an der Teck" part is a hint, since the Teck is a river in Württemberg in Germany. The town is about 15 miles southeast of Stuttgart. King George V of the United Kingdom was married to Mary of Teck, who descended from the Dukes of Teck in the area.
