Joe was one of the first young sailors aboard Iowa even before she slid down the ways of New York Naval Shipyard in 1943. Joe was aboard for the duration of Iowa's Pacific War cruise. In this clip from my extensive interviews with Joe, he recounts the time Iowa carried FDR across the Atlantic to the Cairo and Teheran Conferences. He recalls quite vividly the incident when a friendly torpedo was launched directly at Iowa- a story that was suppressed for many years after the War.
